The musical program was preceeded by a talk on construction of the first transcontinental railroad, given by Mado-lin- e Dixon. A recording of sounds of the old steam engine trains and photographs shown on a screen added to the description of the historic project. Mrs. Dixon said the railroad had long been dreamed of as a means of developing the vast western area for trade and financial gain, but the decision for its construction finally came when Abraham Lincoln and other national figures realized that the Western Country was vulnerable to seizure by any foreign country and that the railroad would link the United States with lands from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean. The musical program was presented by a ladies quartet composed of Karma Whitelock, Gloria Barnett, Erma Meas-o- m and Gwyn Harmer, accompanied by Arlene Provstgaard, wearing costumes in keeping with the times of which they sang. G.O. Dunford added to the program by describing a display of miniature steam engines and trains he visited in Oakland, Calif. Refreshments were served from a table centered with a crystal bowl of pink steam engine" punch, which foamed through addition of dry ice. Appointments were in keeping with the topic of the evening. Mrs. G.O. Dunford presided and introduced the program. Prayer was by LaMark WignalL The opening song was led by Jack Shirts, with piano accompaniment by Linda Shirts, who also played a piano prelude.
