Mortuary San Jose Give kids a boost old Barbara Halvcy and her daughter Monica of W isconsin found out just how important it is to use booster seats and to have child safety scats spected On Good Friday 20(K) Barbara was driving Monica for an Easter visit with her father when they were involved in a serious crash Ms Halvey suffered minor injuries from the impact but Monica was unharmed - perfectly strained in her booster seat in the back Many parents and children arc not this fortunate According to the national Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NIITSM less than tern percent of use booster scats and many parents arc not aware of the serious risk of chilinjury or death in a crash by moving dren out of safety seats too soon and Most parents use convertible scats but when children outgrow their convertible seats around age four and 40 pounds most parents stop using child safety seats and move kids directly into scat belts This can seriously harm small children in acrash since seat belts arc designed for adults ap shoulder belts are made to ride over the bony areas of the shoulders and hips With small children the lap belt tends to ride up into their stomach and the shoulder bell cuts across their necks both of which could cause serious injury or allow the child to be ejected during a crash he solution is to use booster seats until children reach about 80 lbs and about 4'9" tall As a general rule of thumb if a child cannot sit with their backs flat Arprilla Scow Development In Memorium an DGS6RGT0ASI5 against the vehicle seat at the same time that their knees bend at the edge of the vehicle scat then they're too small for a seat belt and must use a booster to ride safely Parents get mixed signals about what is safe for their kids Many look to state child passenger safety laws as a measure of what is safe In Utah state law requires that all children ages must be properly restrained in an approved car safety seat However moving a child out of a car a belt just seat to seat directly safety cause they have turned 5 doesn’t necessarily provide the fullest safety benefit to children "I see lots of parents with small children in seat belts or loose in the car” said Harvey “If went by our state law alone and didn’t use a booster it's possible that Monica would have been seriously injured” “Monica’s experience demonstrates how important it is for parents and other fit caregivers to use safety seats until kids properly in seat belts and to have their kids safety seats inspected as soon as possible” said Dr Sue Bailey NHTSA Administrator For more information on child seat safety or to have your car seat inspected please call one of the following certified child passenger safety technicians: Melinda Steck at (435) ext or
