Show Millard Jail continued from front page prisoner visiting booth is adjacent to the Center When the lawyer wants his client to read documents he must pass the papers through a small slit (8" by 3") in tbe window the dispatcher examines the papers for contraband and passes it on to the prisoner through a similar slit in the prisoners glass window There are 3 other visiting booths in a row with heavy glass windows so the dispatcher has full view of all visitors and prisoners He can also monitor the conversations The visitors have access to the booth through die waiting room which leads to the lobby The prisoner is lead from his cell to his side of the booth and is locked in to keep him safe from other prisoners The kitchen is keep very clean with die aid of trustee kitchen help and is supervised by Food Services Director Tammy Bartholomew She is the only employee in the kitchen the others are trustees Bartholomew said they prepare aoout 300 meals a day 7 days a week Additional meals are prepared for Corrections Officers that can not leave the jail The cooler freezer normally contains one weeks worth of provisions The kitchen and area is inspected by the Health Department every six months Captain Dekker pointed out an interesting security problem in the kitchen He said that all knives are kept under lock and key and are disseminated only on a When a kitchen trustee is finished with the knife it is washed and returned to the lock box The knives are counted several times a day In addition the knives are photographed so that if it ends up missing the correction officers know exactly what it looks like If a knife is missing the entire jail goes into a mode until the knife is found Usually the knife has been thrown out with the garbage or misplaced Dekker said the last missing knife was in 1998 and the jail has never had a serious problem In addiand all cleantion chemicals are ing supplies including mop handles are counted Food is received in an outside protected area Only the staff orders food and when delivered the officers cross check the food against the invoice The food is then brought into the protected area Items that could be used for making such as yeast and fresh fruits are put in the lock down room Trustees are used inside and out side die jail Trustees are used as janitors laundry help cooks bakers kitchen help and outside grounds keepers Captain Dekker said Only inmates who have been adjudicated can be a trustee There are six levels of prisoner classification Level being hard core and Level 6 is ready for the halfway house Level 3 and 4 inmates are used area as trustees in the secure Level 5 inmates are used for outside gardening and grounds keeping work These inmates have special dormitories to live m with other special privileges The jail has a contract with IHC to provide doctor and PA care A full time nurse is part of the jail staff The jail has a Medical Room where the doctors and nurses examine the inmates 95 of the medical needs are taken care of by the nurse Captain Dekker said A nurse is available 24 hours a day if required but she screens inmates at normal hours and determines which ones sec the doctor The nurse has access to all of the inmates medical records by a computer in the Medical Room If die inmate requires medication his family can not bring it to him The jail nurse views the medication requirements a doctor can prescribe and the jail will pick up the medication Medicines such as blood pressure and antibiotics are issued to the inmate and they are responsible for taking it as prescribed Controlled drugs that can be abused are kept by the staff and issued by the nurse These type of drugs require a Corrections Officer to check the mouth of the inmate to verify the pill was swallowed The Control Room is manned 24 hours a day with one Corrections Officer The Officer has visual contact with four (4) sections including three (3) 16 man dormitory sections containing a total of 66 beds Most of these inmates are state prisoners and most beds are full Access to the Control Room is through one door and Officer has to open it - no keys Most of the doors within the jail are only opened remotely from the Control Room w ith the aid of radio communications The status of the doors are displayed on a control panel a green light indicates the door is safeclosed and a red light indicates The Officer can control the level of the lights in each cell block can listen in on phone conversations (16 each) the number of times each toilet can be flushed and the number of times a sink can be turned on (prevents intentional flooding) the and monitors the Fire Alarm System sprinklers are located through out the cell btocks and jail The Program Room is provided for the betterment of the prisoners There are nine (9) computers for the inmates to tram on and class room books to aid the inmates to obtain their high school diplomaGED Other activities in the room are religious services AA meetings Anger Management Classes how to write a resume job search etc These activities and classes are conducted by volunteers who donate their time and skills Captain Dekker would welcome additional volunteers with special skills who would help educate and tram the inmates Dekker also requests donated books for the prison library Any book be it technical or fiction is requested preferably in hardback -
