Show Pace 2 Millard County Chronicle Procress January 17 1991 1 Comments Well I'm livmg up to my New Year's Resolution to clean the house not only have I been working at it but half the month of January is gone and I haven’t fizz led I am sull enthused to do it all For the time I have pul into it so far it is a good thing that I designated the entire So far I have made it year of 1991 somewhat through a room and two halves and only have 12 and two halves to go and I haven't started on the big stuff walls ceilings and carpets But I have sure found the treasures and pitched out a tons of miscellaneous papers I can't believe the papers I accumulate but then every meeting attend adds about a ream so I shouldn't be surprised Family members are having trouble dealing with my cleaning spell Their attitudes range from shock to disbelief with “she'll get over this soon and we can reven back” in between 5 by Sue But ilia a primetime to start some new attitudes as Chasity is only 3 and she finds hanging up her coat quite a thrill and running the vacuum is also a treat My plan is to get the house the way I want it and then I won't have to go through this again for several years providing I can keep up the pressure of PUTTING THINGS WHERE THEY BELONG' Lewis always said people like me should not be allowed any fal surfaces coffee tables desks everything should be on a slant and then I wouldn't be able to stack and save at such a rate I also read somewhere that if anything is set down and not picked up again after three days is becomes invisible and I think it is true I can t believe the invisible stuff I have found and just wait until I get to the stack it will be of clothes m my bedroom better than a shopping trip K n T ( s' Delta area Fillmore area ‘ by Jay T Rogers by Reed Jeffery Watch out for energy scams fortunate Unfortunately the wells in question often do not ex ist are dry out of production or belong to someone else Historically about one in three drilling partnerships haven't returned the original vestment Unless you can afford to lose your money an oil and gas partnership just might be too risky Fraudulent oil and gas deals are normally structured with the limited partnership (or other legal entity) m one state the operation and physical presence of the field in a second state and the offering made to prospective investors in stales other than the initial two states Thus there is less chance of an investor dropping by a phony well site or nonexistent headquarters company Such a structure also makes it difficult for law enforcement officials and victims ui identify and expose the fraud Prospective investors should take some necessary steps to protect themselves against fraud Investors should: identify the location of wells and offices always obtain a prospectus don't accept a sales brochure as being factual Find out from the prospectus who the promoters are what experience they have the risks of the proposed investment and whether the money to be raised is sufficient to accomplish what is proposed And above ail else investors should make sure they understand what they are being asked to invest in and how nsky it is The fact is that every investment has nsk and oil related investments can be among the riskiest of all investments note: This article is reEditor’ printed from the Utah Department of Commerce “Commerce Quarterly” issue with permission) Winter is a time when demand for energy is always on the nse The Persian Gulf Crisis has had a great impact on the rising cost of energy m the world and with the nse in oil pnees comes an inevitable increase in energy scams The field is wide open to con artists who prey on victims who are trying to End cheaper and more efficient ways to heat their homes dnve their automobiles or operate their appliances It is aiso a time when “great discovenes"are being touted as the “investment chance of a lifetime" Although there are some good in vestments m any "chances of a lifetime” are nothing more than a chance to be ripped off Oil and gas partnerships can operate in many ways including limited partner ship interests ownership of fractional undivided interest in leases and general partnerships The most popular oil and gas investment is a limited partnership Oil and gas partnersh ips fall into two drilling and income par categories are Drilling partnerships nerships formed to locate new oil and gas fields while income partnerships are formed to invest in existing wells Bogus investment programs in oil and gas wells have long been a staple of U S investment fraud The incidence of wild schemes seems related to rapid increases in the price of oil because people want to take advantage of what they see as an opportunity to make a lot of money quickly However as it turns out too often only the promoters are so Consumer review and predictions Dennis Hinkamp State University If you can find a bright side to 1990 will be that the events of the past year should kick us back into more sensible lifestyles The increase m energy cost should help fuel the environmental movement and economic uncertainty should promote cautious consumensm In general we should return to our sensibilities: Sensible banking: If you look at the savings and loan “crisis” for what it really is— white collar bank robbery--iwould rank as the biggest crime ever Consumers will start looking for stability in banking institutions instead of just high rates of return Sensible shoes: With the cost of athletic shoes already exceed bike mg the cost of a discount this excess has to end somewhere Inner city crime stones of youth being held up for their shoes and athletes mak in g more money on shoe contracts than their team salaries are adding to the shoe controversy Look for the cheap canvas high tops to be “in” once again Sensible cars: If you haven’t run out and bought your luxury car before Jan it’s going to cost you more The new luxury tax is 10 percent of the amount exceeding $30000 on all new automobiles Look for auto manufacturers to dust off their old high mileage commercials This in addition to safety will be the two main attributes people are looking for in an automobile By Itah it COMMUNITY CALENDAR ) VIotor Vehicle Schedule: Fillmore Delta weekdays Millard County Assessor’s Office Great Basin suspects were volved in varying combinations in the several burglaries “Randy Smith I think was involved m every one" he said “and Larsen and Christensen were involved in an awfully lot of them and then Oman was involved in quite a few and Pintor was the least involved" Charges included burglaries of businesses third degree felonies burglaries of residences second degree felonies thefts ranging from second degree felonies to misdemeanors depending on the value of the property involved and other related charges At the arraignment Judge Backlund appointed a public defender for “a couple of the men who qualified" Stewart said "He ordered one of them to retain his own counsel One of them already had his own counsel" Bail for those still incarcerated at the time was reduced to $ 000 One suspect was released on his own recognizance After the arraignment Nephi City Police arrested "two or three of them" Stewart said “I'm not sure which who were involved m a burglary up there and took them up there to answer lo that" The suspects were scheduled to appear again in Circuit Court Friday Jan 25 lo decide whe'Jicr or not they want a preliminary hearing The cases may then be bound over to District Court Sensible packaging: Consumers arc now as concerned about the packaging or products as the worth of the products Fast food restaurants are themselves reducing their use of polystyrene boxes and compact disc music will likely come in smaller boxes in the future If you want to reduce packaging at fast food restaurants always ask for the food “to stay” even if it is to go The food usually still comes with enough paper to enable you to easily carry it home Or bring your own bag Sensible eating: The trend of eliminating red meat from diets will likely turn around as consumers discover more healthful methods of preparing beef The possible risks involved in eating other types of meat and seafood will also weigh m beef s favor Sensible censorship: The rush to regulate products art and entertainment has proved to be not as clear cut as some people thought Consumers voting with their dollars will remain the most effective method of cleaning up the marketplace Sensible spending: We just got through hearing a month’s worth of whining from the economic forecasters and merchants about how we consumers weren’t spending enough for the holidays Some of the reports took a threatening tone as if not spending gobs of money would actually cause the recession Just a year ago we were getting crilicized for not saving and being a nation of credit card junkies New Feature for Spanish readers In an ongoing effort to serve the readers of Millard County the Millard County Chronicle Progress is starting a new feature in the paper We are starting a column for our Spanish speaking residents We have thought for some time how difficult it is particularly for Libraries to advertise English as a second language classes for Spanish speaking people to learn English in English We also feel that many other announcements and advertisements would be of interest to the Spanish speaking residents We have enlisted the aid of several bilingual people to do translating for us So if you have articles or advertisements that you wish in both languages please get them to us by Friday or early Mondays so the translations may be made in time for that week's Department of Agriculture are sponsoring a workshop for pesticide applicator licensing and recertification All farmers and ranchers are invited to attend the workshop to be held Wed nesday January 23 in the new exhibit building at the fairgrounds in Delta from pm Dr Howard Extension Specialist and Joseph Beckscrand Utah Department of Agriculture will provide training and Roland Murdock District Agriculture Inspector wll accept license applications Those who use pesticides classified as "Restricted Use” are required to display or hold a license when purchasing possessing or applying them 4 Workshop participants will receive training in handling and applying pesticides safely and how to interpret and understand label directions Pesticides have enabled growers in the United States to produce foods that are the least expensive safest and of the highest quality in the world Most consumers are concerned about pesticide residues on food yet they are unfamiliar with food production and have little appreciation or knowledge of its quality and safety Fanners who use pesticides wisely and follow label directions will prevent unsafe residues on food prevent at km of our environment and will confidence in a safe give consumer food supply Media Man! A pocket full of noses by Ken (ail fall brown) Rand Our definitive series on subjects about which few people know or care to continues with this column cm pockets This is often a deep subject yet from it we can seldom extract more than a few bits of lint movie ticket halves and some spare change A pity given the hard economic time we face A myth about pockets started by nogood dirty ungrateful lazy irresponsible pinko radical liberal subversive revolutionary commie malcontent leftist with holes in theirs if that pockets were invented by rich people as a place and other people’s to put their money Our nation’s gallant Captains of Industry have thus been grievously maligned for years by the lower classes Yes pockets started in the 17th century by London tailors groveling to please factory owners noblemen and the Duke of Earl But the idea was to give the Guardians of Commerce easy access to their watches so the Industrial Revolution would start on time and we’d all get rich on schedule Plebian Beverly use of pockets soon followed Early attempts to use pockets to carry bowling balls hoc soup and worms failed of course but the masses continued experimenting with bright bus of cloth until they perfected the technique Carpenters found storing nails in pockets was less hazardous than stuffing them in one’s mouth Instead of sticking spare bullets up their noses policemen put them in pockets Waitresses put tips such as they were in pockets leaving ears clear to hear customer's shout orders Pockets ended inappropriate use of other bodily orifices a relief to mothers and doctors (Recall your mother telling you not to stick beans in your ears) Athletes never got into pockets as it were Few jockeys swimmers or Sumo wrestlers wear pockets at work Too bad this lack of pockitudc hasn't caught on in the American working place where the working class has found pockets s useful place to put their hands when they stand around on coffee breaks stare blankly at valuable company property they sabotaged to avoid work or otherwise malinger Pockets ere ate jobs With no pockets where would we put our pocketbooks pocketknives and pocket battleships? With no pockets we’d have no wallets We’d have no pickpockets Men use pockets and women don't That's because men wear pants and women wear dresses and pants have pockets and dresses don't This has nothing to do with politics This reporter won’t be lured into an undignified argument on the subject by a bunch of uppity women’s libber broads who don't wear makeup and don’t know their place It wouldn’t be manly You've heard theories in the Washington Stick the Provo Daily Bungler and the CBS Evening Crock that some pockets were deliberately made so when you sit down all your change falls out This is nonsense of course Wives did not create such pockets to collect an escape fund from un ter sofa cushions and they were not in ve ited by underpaid movie theater janitors or taxi cab drivers Pay no attention to these rumors They’re part of a sordid plot by would-brevolutionaries to ferment discontent in the lower classes A thorough investigation by a highly respected agency of Your Government has found there is no truth to these rumors Loyal citizens are urged to ignore them and get back to work Other fascinating facta about pockets: Leonardo da Vinci invented a pocket piano in 1452 It never caught on because pockets hadn’t been invented sight As I glanced at the television set his behavior began to make sense He was imitating the movement observed on the television program We then realized that more caution was needed and that just leaving the television on during the day could be troublesome Although television and other media have provided effective educational tools from young children the problem with violence in the media has become much worse since the Federal Commudecision to nication Commission’ children's commercial television in 1982 Cartoons with violent acts have creased at an alarming rate Increasingly television and other media have become an important source of information for children Those involved with research in the area of television violence and children have identified three problems associated with heavy viewing of television violence: Children may become less sensitive to the pain and suffering of others they may become more fearful of the world around diem and they may be more likely to behave in aggressive or harmful way towards other My work enables me to interact with young children on a daily basis One of the biggest challenges I find is trying to teach young children about resolving f If Bikinis don't have pockets The inventor of pockets first put them behind the knees but this didn't work out Pockets don’t grow on trees They’re a tuber like potatoes and grow underground Mother kangaroos keep babies in pockets until they’re old enough to know better Man can lcam from Nature You can leant more official authorized facts on the fascinating subject of pockets from a booklet titled “More Official Authonzed Facts on the Fascinating Subject of Pockets" The booklet weighs only 65 lb It's available for a modest fee from the US Bureau of Official Information Processing Control and Proper Dissemination Write few more information care of this newspaper ask the kids to water the houseplants I'm going to remind them the green plants help keep the air clean by absorbing chemicals I'll avoid insecticides inside the house (swat stomp or return the bug to the great outdoors) I'll try not to jump in the car for every trip I have a bike The local convenience store is a walk It's good for me I’ll or ride the bus when I can I’ll haul the old papers the aluminum cans and the glass bottles down to the recycling centers Some of these things are going to be a bit of a pain Being wasteful has long been more convenient But if we can pitch in as a family if the kids know why if even a small part of them sees how they fit into a global picture it will be worth the effort Media Violence in children’s lives By Owen Anderson Utah State University while I was exLogan— Recently pressing disapproval of my two year old son’s inappropriate behavior he placed hand the other one in pointed a finger at me and commenced shooting I was staggered! Where did this gesture come from? My wife and I had attempted to keep violent programs and toys from his everyday activities That incident had slipped from my mind until one afternoon when I saw the same youngster running around in the living room shooting at everything in ' yet Children and responsibility I I want my kids to be responsible want them to be aware how their own actions can affect others I want them to think of themselves as people who are important and who can make a difference in the world Who doesn’t? But I also think those things don’t just happen They have to be taught And the best method is not going to be a lecture It's going to be by action and example I'm going to start today Since I want my kids to make a difference in the world I think I’ll start with the world itself I recently picked up a pamphlet with some helpful hints on how to It listed small save the environment things my family can do to make things better I'm going to avoid foam products I’ll buy my eggs in cardboard boxes When I I conflicts in a positive manner When faced with conflict model the role of their favorite television character and exhibit inappropriate and aggressive acts Children who view frequent acts of violence may learn that aggression is a successful and acceptable way to achieve goals and solve problems As a teacher I work with children to facilitate more appropriate problem solving skills when themes of television violence appear in their play Replacing inappropriate methods of resolving conflicts with socially desirable techniques can be laborious and time consuming Why not prevent unnecessary reproductions of violence? Parents are encouraged to support the reinstitution of FCC standards establishing limits on violence and promote the use of the media for displaying positive social values As consumers parents can communicate with advertisers on programs that are worthwhile as well as sponsors of programs that are violent We can also encourage legislators to adopt policies to protect children from violence through the media The media can and should direct their influence to the constructive expansion of children’s knowledge and furthering the development of positive social values At the same time we need to teach children to become critical viewers of all forms of media Make sure your children understand the unreality of most stories they see on the screen That means watching the show together and talking about what’s right andor wrong with it It's difficult to understand the influence and effect television has on your child unless you spend time watching it with them Discuss the moral implications of programs with your child and the intentions behind a character’s actions A child taught to enjoy great art will be able to distinguish its may forms J |
