Show Millard County Thun L'SPS June 16 1988 Page 5 Millard Academy banquet held “Let’s have a party” was the theme the Millard High School banquet and dance held Sat May 7 1988 at the Hinckley LDS Ward Cultural Hall And “party” we did! The hall was breathtaking with bouquets of balloons and party hats Dinner was served to 216 by the supper club with Cherie Morris in charge by the Young Women and Young Men of the Hinckley 2nd Ward An excellent program was presented that evening with Clare Bishop class of ’48 as Master of Ceremonies The program went as follows: “Friend of Mine” was sung by Harlan Hilton and James Carlos Bishop toast to the class of ’48 by Blain Wilson song from the opera “Don Alonzo’s Treasure”and “When Get Back” by Merlin Theobald and his wife Beulah toast to the class of ’38 by Ruth Robison AIlsop skit from the opera “Oh Doctor” by Bob Carling Dorthella Knott Marilyn Fullmer Sheriff and her husband Orlen toast to the class of ’28 by J Evan Wright “The Impossible Dream” was sung by Melvin response from Rulon T Hinckley (class of 18) “Just a Little Street Where Old Friends Meet” was sung by David Bishop A special slide presentation was given of attends class reunion LaVar Owens a 1938 University of Utah graduate returned to his Alma Mater for the 50 year reunion of his class The Centennial Celebration was held Saturday Sunday and Monday June 4 5 and 6 and LaVar and his wife Bertha enjoyed the weekend festivities The Class of ’38 was the largest graduating class at that time This year over 2000 seniors received diplomas at the the Centennial graduation The number cf graduates was more than five times greater than the number graduating fifty years ago Members of the Class of 38 came to the reunion from all over the United States and they were honored as “Golden Aggies” LaVar and Bertha enjoyed renewing old acquaintances as well as making new friends Thursday evening the classmates enjoyed a dinner with musical entertainment at the downtown Blue Bud Restaurant One hundred forty people were in attendance On Friday evening they were treated to a super Pops Concert in the new Chase Fine Arts Center The graduation exercises for the Class of ’88 were held Saturday morning in the Spectrum and the Golden Aggies were special guests After the graduation an assembly of the Golden Aggies group was held in the Walnut Room of the Student Center There President Casier was the luncheon speaker Thanks to people of Delta The family of Herbert Vinson wish to publicly thank the kind and compassionate people of Delta Utah On June 8 Herbert passed away in his sleep at a Delta Motel The policemen Chief Kim Roger Young and Sergeant went beyond their normal Taylor duties and stayed with Jennie Herbert’s wife until her family could arrive They helped with mortuary arrangements and notified Pastor Warren Fikejs so that Jennie could have Albert Nickle of spiritual support Nickle Mortuary in the helping trusting manner of your town loaned us equipment so that we could transport Herbert home for burial in Grand Junction Words can not adequately express how much Jennie and the Vinson family appreciate Delta’s generosity and compassion in this difficult time Ruth and Chuck campus has changed a lot in the past fifty years expanding in every direction Millions of dollars have been contributed to the college for new facilities over the years by the many successful alumni A graduate of Delta High School LaVar first went to the USU campus with Bertha in the fall of 1935 Prior to that they had attended the BAC in Cedar City LaVar managed the USU bookstore and was in charge of ticket sales for all ball games dances and other student activities He attended classes half a day for three years Bertha in the meantime worked full time at the Logan Credit Bureau and the Logan Garment factory while earning her “PHT” (putting hubby through) degree After graduating with a Business Degree LaVar accepted a position with the First National Bank of Logan where he worked for five years before returning to Delta with his young family (He and Bertha have four daughters) He has farmed in Sutherland since 1943 he served two terms as Millard Countv Commissioner and he was a director of the West for twenty-siMillard years His business education and experience have been great assets to him in his career Youngs to be honored Chan Hei and Sid have chosen June 4 1988 to seal
