Show 2 - Pge Millard County USPS Thurs Oct 1987 Dear John Letters Herbs are for salads by Dennis Hinkamp Consumer Information Writer Utah State University There is something soothing about taking an herbal remedy instead of going to the doctor for a cold needle in the rump or a prescription you can’t read for a drug you can’t pronounce Wouldn’t a nice pot of herbal tea be so much nicer and more natural! Besides the fact that you’d miss all those great magazines in the doctor’s waiting room using herbal medications has other drawbacks At best they may not have any effect on your illness at worst they cause illnesses of their own Using herbs as medicines is not limited to people who are vegetarians or live otherwise “natural” lifestyles Several years ago a survey of 377 randomly selected Utah and California households found that more than half used herbs as medicine “often” or natural poisons Herbal extracts and drinks made from hemlock curare and deadly nightshade are some of the earliest known poisons 2) We don’t know enough about herbal teas to conclude they’re safe: Although nutmeg is a commonly used spice and jimson weed is an important source of certain drugs both can be and have been found toxic when brewed into tea Another problem is that certain substances produced in the tea brewing process may not have an immediate effect but will build up to toxic levels in the body over time can be 3) Any type of dangerous: Sure our ancient ancestors but what used herbs successfully did choice they have? Magic and mysticism were also parts of their treatment but few people rely on these for a cure today The biggest drawback to is that it delays your visit to a doctor in time to catch a serious problem 4) Everyone is different: Even painstakingly tested drugs can have adverse effects on certain people What may cure one person may cause an allergic reaction in another Since herbs generally are not as well tested as and prescription drugs the chance of an adverse reaction is greater than for tested drugs Don’t panic Most herbs are not harmful but they are better used for seasoning soups and salads than for curing illness “sometimes” Yes it is true that people have been medicating themselves with herbs for thousands of years Yes it is also true that willow bark was prescribed for pain and fever 2000 years before anyone discovered that it contained the basic ingredients of aspirin However we don’t know how many people died by trial and error use of herbs before they discovered willow bark’s effect Georgia Lauritzen Extension nutrition specialist in the Utah State University college of family life lists some other good reasons not to medicate with herbs natural herbs contain 1) Some column is presented community service of Intermountain Health Care and is written by John Waterbury Letters or responses may be sent to Nm at Intermountain Health Care 36 South State Street Sdt Lake City Utah 84U1 By depth pm Oct 2 Flu Immunizations for Delta Oasis Deseret Hinckley & Sutherland ME Bird Center “ Oct 5 Evening with Art SlideSound from National Gallery of Art 7:30 pm Fillmore Library No charge American Legion Auxiliary Meeting City Cafe 7:30 pm ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS Meetings: Mon 8 Library Christmas Wed & pm ALANON: Wed8prn Delta Mental Health Offices 51 North Center For info call: Call Geno: The Millard County USPS located Editor Publisher Editorial Carder Reporter legal Billing Design Fillmore Office Manager Evelyn Mallet Receivable Deb Greathouse Accounts Circulation Goertz CirculationComp CirculationProduction Robinson Commercial Printing Dutson Shellie In Advance Subscriptions Delta Area In County 00 per year In County $10 00 per 6 months Out of County $2000 per year 00 per 6 months Out of County cents Single Copy POSTMASTER PO Vi Address Delta changes Utah on amf Kt Potfc fmd t U 4 J400 or 5J40 I ip1 uu’ii-f- Send Box 249 Second Oct 28 Cancer Screening Clinic Delta 1st & 2nd Ward Bldg 222 West 200 North only call Appointments brown sugar Add a slice of soft bread to the package of brown sugar close the bag tightly and in a few hours the sugar will be soft again If you need it in a hurry simply grate the amount called for with a hand grater Or put brown sugar and a cup of water (do not add to the sugar set it alongside of it) in a covered pan Place in the oven (low heat) for a while Or buy liquid brown sugar at Large Advertising Sales 8 Riley Wood Julie Ward Goertz Ward by Warren Ottley A number of years ago I knew a very fine man who was a letter carrier in a 30 For years he had covered large city a walking route in a heavily occupied He walked briskly business area always maintained a friendly demeanor and made hundreds of friends When he announced his retirement the news was greeted with considerable regret among the people he had served so well for so long It wasn’t long until we were shocked to learn that he had suddenly passed away What happened? Because of their integrity self doubt is diminished and self confidence is enhanced They are subject to bad days just as everyone else but those days are not seen as a reflection of personal inadequacy or failure Because of the course they chart they experience a greater degree of satisfaction in life They look for the best and they find it I am happy to hear that you see the world as a happier place But just it is not the world that has remember changed Dear Readers: For most of my life I have been accused of being overly optimistic and at times almost simplistic in my perception of life But that’s okay I like the world as I see it Recently I had the opportunity to meet with a group who also suffers Their creed from acute optimism seems to say it all: THE OPTIMIST CREED PROMISE YOURSEL- FTo be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind To talk health happiness and prosperity to every person you meet To make all your friends feel that there Is something in them To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true To think only of the best to work only for the best and to expect only the best To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others To be too large for worry too noble for anger too strong for fear and too happy to permit the presence of trouble OPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL Believe that life CONFIDENTIALLY: is worth living and that belief will help create the fact To keep frying food from spattering invert a metal colander over the pan allowing steam to escape My Opinion Roots by Dawn Carder Several years ago my mother gave me a wall hanging with the following inscription: “There are but two gifts you can give your children The first is roots The second is wings” The message has remained with me and I have pondered it many times over the years My sisters brother and I were fortunate for our parents helped us establish firm roots as we “dug our toes” into the West Virginia soil We were surrounded by love and firm guidelines for behavior We were equally fortunate that our mother like a mother bird knew when to push us out of the nest thus allowing us to develop our wings more Today children experience changes and transitions in their lives than I did making the need for roots even greater Without them one flounders often feeling threatened and insecure Children are now as they have been for centuries resilient They can endure survive and blossom even when experiencing upset and change But roots are necessary components for the much needed foundations Parents teachers members of the extended families religious leaders friends-of us have responsibilities for this nuturing and development last My mother was hospitalized week while visiting my sister in Texas so I flew down to be with them While there I once again experienced the sense of belonging as I was surrounded by love from Mother Melanie my I and my nephews remembered the poem I wrote not long ago “Little plant we are alike you and I We can be transplanted-can blossom But our roots need time need nourishment in order for us to feel secure-- in order for us to continue to grow” My family members including my children are scattered from coast to coast in seven states All have experienced transitions yet because we had strong roots we all continue to grow Open apology I would like to offer my sincerest apologies to the coaches players staff and fans of the MHS football team and anyone else who may have been offended by the sign I displayed in my truck at the MHS JV football game last week I realize that I used some poor I hope judgment in this circumstance all concerned will accept this apology Sincerely June Dutson Proclaim liberty Thoughts on the “Good Old Days While we are thanking God for the Founding Fathers and the work they did here in Philadelphia let us also thank God that we live in the United States of 1987 rather than the new republic of 1787 We can be grateful to them for the America that they helped to make possible without blinding our eyes to the real facts about the “good old days” How many of us today realize that although a national established church was forbidden by the Constitution in 1787 voting and were restricted to church members in several states? How many of us remember that women were ineligible to vote or hold office in 1787 and in 1887 too? How many would return to a time less than 9 a century ago when less than 5 percent the population had any education above the 4th grade? How many would still approve chattel slavery and indentured servitude? How many would approve of working conditions that were found less than a century ago in the mines and factories of Pennsylvania with children and women working a week and a day - without safety measures and without health or injury insurance? Let us with clear heads and pure hearts be grateful to the Founding Fathers for the good start they gave us but not be blind to the progress made since 1787! Franklin H Littell The Hamlin Institute of SPORTS MED Shin Splints Most runners will at some time during their training complain of soreness or pain over the lower portion of the leg This area is commonly referred to as the shin and the symptom complex as shin splints It is commonly seen in athletes participating in track cross country tennis basketball and occasionally football Shin splints usually begin with a soreness of dull aching pain along the lower half of the tibia Most commonis experienced along ly this discomfort the inner aspect of the leg Less frequently the pain is localized along the front or lateral (outer) portion of the leg In the early stages of this injury the onset of pain begins after a long run The pain may be replaced by a nagging soreness With repetitive running the pain begins shortly after the running starts Without proper rest or treatment the symptoms become more tense The pain increases and is constant before during and after exercise Shin splints is an overuse syndrome often caused by increased training in the poorly conditioned athlete It can also be a result of running on hard surfaces or the steep shoulder of a road Many runners experience shin splints during the winter months when they run on banked indoor tracks All of these mechanisms produce a significant traction or pull on the posterior tibial tendon This repetitive action produces a tendinitis Other causes include poor alignment problems of which excessive pronation (or flattening of the arch) is most prominent Pronation is a significant cause of shin splints and occurs when the inner aspect of the foot contacts the ground more than the outer edge during the midistance phase of running TREATMENT Treatment should be started after a good history is obtained The athlete should be thoroughly questioned regarding changes in the daily exercise routine mileage shoes or running surface The initial management should in clude: rest application of ice after exercise and wrapping or taping of the leg prior to running Hot soaks prior to the initial warm-umay also be beneficial As the pain of the shin splints gradually decreases strength and flexibility exercises are started Ankle lifts and heel cord stretching are emphasized When the athlete resumes running it should be on a soft flat surface with proper Addishoes and reduced didstances tional treatment may be necessary in patients with excessive pronation collapsed arches or with poor running gait Molded orthotic insoles help prevent over pronation These devices are light flexible and permit the athlete to compete without significant restriction Simple arch supports easily fit into the running shoe and relieve the pull on the tendons Most athletes have partial or full recovery after conservative treatment A small percentage of this group will develop a “compartment syndrome” This develops as a result of swelling in the muscles of the leg While this is a normal process in all runners the swelling may be great enough in some to the blood vessels and compress diminish oxygen supply With less oxygen the muscles produce pain which is cramping in nature In these stances surgical release of the restrictive fascia provides excellent results Releasing the fascia (the muscular envelope) allows more swelling by the muscles before the blood vessels are compressed If these symptoms fail to respond to other conditions proper treatment which are similar to shin splints should be investigated Of these tibial or fibular stress fractures are common and should be ruled out Should you have symptoms similar to those of shin splints please consult your physician for proper advice and treatment If you have a question regarding please forward it to Dr 1361 Stephen Henry Tyler Park Louisville KY 40204 f r Keep Eye Out for Black Widows The black widow spider one of the most venemous spiders in the country from fields to protected is moving places in homes and gardens Vince Jones Utah State University Extension entomologist advises residents in all parts of Utah to be on for black widows in the lookout garages or sheds where they spin webs in corners or between piles of articles Those who work in such areas should wear gloves to reduce the possibility of accidental bites Jones says he’s also received reports of black widows in homes The venom of the black widow is considered to be about 15 times more potent than rattlesnake venom But while the symptoms of a bite may be severe death occurs in fewer than 5 percent of cases Jones says “Although the bite itself may appear to be only a pin prick it produces excruciating pain which spreads from the area of the bite to all portions of the body within a few minutes” Jones says “Within hours chills vomiting prodelirium partial fuse perspiration paralysis violent abdominal cramps difficulty in breathing and spasms may result” If a black widow bite is suspected he says get the victim to the doctor Take the spider along in alcohol if possible The adult female is a shiny black to The characteristic red sepia color hourglass marking is found on the underside of the abdomen The mark may not appear as a perfect hourglass but as two irregular red blotches The female is to of an inch long and has four pairs of eyes which are shiny black with red spots The male is much smaller than the female about of an inch long with a less globular abdomen The top part of the male abdomen has a row of red and white spots near the midline and the underside may have four pairs of stripes red in the middle and white at the edges The black widow spins a strong web that usually has a retreat extending toward the ground Jones says cleaning up litter from the garden and storage areas will help eliminate hiding places for black widows Also check buildings for cracks or small openings where the spider can migrate indoors If necessary the spiders can be controlled chemically with a household spray that contains diazinon baygon resmethrin or dursban Read pesticide label instructions carefully before use 9 1 |
