Freedom of the press is written down in the First Amendment Arthur Miller said “We are unlike any other nation in our willingness to be open” and the First Amendment grants rights to the press not granted to other businesses on the other hand is not Privacy specifically mentioned in the Constitution The Fourth Amendment guarantees against unreasonable searches or seizures and from this interpretations of privacy have come In such an open society a conflict between free press and privacy arises because people are resentful of the trusion into their lives by computers which have files on nearly every activity These files can be monitored by governmental agencies or others having access to the computer data banks with more rights “We Americans than any other people in the world are also the most questioned the most reported the most dossiered the most interrogated people who ever were” observed Miller He went on to say that “Consciously or unconsciously we see the media as the purveyors of that as the gatherers of technology information The media also raises questions about whether the public’s right to know justifies trespass surveillance or confidential or stolen receiving information A debate on the issues of free press and privacy would be appreciated by Arthur Miller The results he hopes will be a healthy compromise “If this is a heavyweight bout like think it is I’d like to see a donnybrook” he said ‘‘but don’t want to see a knockout None of us will benefit if we lose either right” by Dawn Carder National Newspaper Week will be observed October 4 through 10 this year One of the Constitutionally guaranteed freedoms to citizens of the United States is a free independent and unrestrained press Such an institution has the responsibility to provide information that gives free citizens the means to make informed and responsible decisions As newspapers across the country endeavor to maintain the free press and to inform the public is privacy invaded? In a speech observing the Constitutional bicentennial Arthur Miller a Harvard University law professor stated that our country is headed for a showdown between free press and privacy He connected concern about the loss of privacy to the intrusion of aggressive reporters into private lives with the role computers have taken in our lives Miller maintained that even our heroes become victims of the press and he gave examples such as the Marine who struck the arm of Squeaky Fromme when she raised a gun to shoot at President Gerald Ford possibly saving Ford’s life Four days later a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle stated in print that the Marine was gay and many wire services and broadcast media picked up the story According to Miller "There were many questions to be answered after the shooting but that had the right to be left alone “Is the price of heroism in this country the risk that the media will strip you naked and tell 120 million people something your mother doesn’t even know?’’ Hamilton sentenced for Sant murder UEA to hold convention Utah educators will go to “school” October 8 and 9 when they attend the Utah Education Association convention at the Salt
