That red and white Bronco hasn’t been making the rounds lately has it? No it’s not Christmas time already Remember that’s the time that Jay normally takes his Christmas vacation Sad to say as it is like Estelle Gardner Jay has pulled the plug and retired after about 21 years with the Postal Service here in Delta I’m not sure who all of you Route Oners will bake for now or how you will set your watches but I’ll bet you will agree Jay will be missed as he is one of the best rural carriers Delta has ever seen But wait what’ he gonna do now By you ask? Well first he’s gonna wait until it gets cold enough to turn his sprinklers off for good and then I hear that he’s gonna visit his daughter in California After that I know that Texas will be on the list because that’s where the grandson is There is always the volunteer fire department that I’m sure he will still mess around with even if he says he’s gonna retire from that too And next spring you can bet that Jay will be doing some farming just because his favorite “soap” isn’t on that day Jay we’ll miss you Enjoy your retirement Community Calendar Beginning June 15 Motor Vehicle Schedule: Fillmore Mond & Thurs 9 a m noon & pm Delta Wed 9 a m noon & pm Renewals any working day at Millard County Offices September National Child Safety Month Sept Prenatal classes Fillmore Communicall to ty Medical Center register Sept Archery Elk Season Sept Farm Safety Week Emergency Medical Services Week School Bus Safety Week Sept 23 24 25 Delta High School Homecoming Sept 24 West Millard Cultural Council presents ‘“Horse Sense” at 7 pm Delta Middle School Auditorium $300 Veterans Outreach representative Fillmore Job Service Delta Job Service pm Sept 25 Wendy Johnson and Troy N Young wedding reception 7:30-- pm Delta 3rd4th Ward Lisa Kay Dobson and George David Gamble wedding open house pm 266 W 400 N Delta Gail Dafoe and Keith Meinhardt wedding reception pm Delta Stake Center Field Representative for Utah State Retirement Systems Fillmore City Offices 8:30 to 2:00 ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS Meetings: Mon 8 Wed & pm ALAN0N: Wed 8 pm Delta Mental Health Offices 51 North Center For info call: Call PR0BLEMS& Geno: The Millard Courtly TEENAGE Sept 26 Ron Williams Concert 8:00 pm Auditorium Sept 27 Kent Elder Johnson mission First Sutherland 2 pm farewell Ward Kaye Loveless mission report 12:30 pm Sutherland 1st Ward Sept 28 Clinic Delta Public Immunization am Health Office 252 W Main & pm Small Business Development Conference Richfield Flu immunizations for people from Oak City Lynndyl & Leamington at 1:30 & Delta Public Health Office pm Sept 29 Oct 27 28 Registration for Precinct 18 Delta 39 So 300 E Nickle Insurance Bldg Sept 28 30 Oct 2 5 7 9 10 Hunter Safety course Delta Middle School pm October Family Violence Awareness month Oct 1 - Nov 5 Delta Area Prenatal Classes Chamber of Commerce Thursday evenings 7:30 pm Oct 1 Immunization Clinic Fillmore Senior Citizen Center Fillmore & Flowell & other East Millard towns Oct 2 Flu Immunizations for Delta Oasis ME Deseret Hinckley & Sutherland Bird Center Oct 5 Evening with Art SlideSound from National Gallery of Art 7:30 pm Fillmore Library No charge Oct 6 Statewide Home Fire Drill Oct 8 Blood Pressure Clinic Delta Public Health am & pm The Book Group 7:30 pm Fillmore Library “Everett Ruess: A Vagabond for Beauty” No charge Oct 9 Bruce Clark and Kelly Anderson Open House Bob and Sharon Clark home 6705 North 2000 West pm Oct 13 Clinic at Fillmore Immunization noon Public Health Office at Blood pressure screening Fillmore Public Health office pm Oct 27 Cancer Screening Clinic Fillmore 1st & 4th wards Appointments only call ©DOS Chronicle Progress USPS locatad Publisher Editor - Dulson Susan Editorial Carder Dawn Reporter HEART THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION PROGRAM MEMORIAL at Large Advertising Sales Riley Wood 8 Legal Billing WERE Julie Ward Goertz Design Fillmore Office Manager Evelyn Mallet Receivable Accounts Deb Greathouse American Heart Association Circulation Julie Ward Goertz Circulation Circulation Rita Robinson Commercial Comp This space Production of of POSTMASTER P O 00 per 00 per 6 50 cents $20 County County Copy Single Send Address Delta Box 249 as a public service Dear John drink too much and I can’t quit (I’ll bet you’ve never heard that one before) Anyway I’ve tried to bring myself to the point that I could get but I don’t fully volved in AA understand them All of their “Higher Power” stuff That just isn’t for me I would use it if I knew for sure it would work but it just doesn’t make much sense Any right now suggestions? Signed I Would If I Could But I Can’t Dear Would Could Can’t You will never know the magic of AA unless you give it a try But take some solace from the fact that many AA members have been where you are now Maybe that’s part of their magic Harry Emerson Fosdick once told a story of a young boy and an old sailor “What is the wind?” asked the boy The old man scratched his head “I don’t know” he said “But I know how to hoist a sail” In plain English it is not necessary to fully undersand AA or the “Higher Power” concept to be able to benefit from their power All it takes is the recognition that you’re “sick and tired of being sick and tired” Take that first To do your best - that is the goal of all athletics For the athlete who wants to “enhance” his performance diet is frequently one of the methods that is tried The truth so simple it is difficult to believe is that good sound nutritional practices are the basis for outstanding performances The meal has suffered the most myths as to what one should or should not eat The purpose of the meal is to make you physically comfortable and mentally alert - not to provide additional energy Therefore the meal should take place three to four hours before the competition The meal should be high in carbohydrates and low in fats Foods high in fat and high in protein take the longest to digest and will therefore stay in your stomach longer This may actually cause nausea vomiting or which will inhibit your cramping performance Foods like hamburgers french fries fried chicken and peanut doughnuts butter should be avoided before com- - Pari 3400 Utah changes 84624 to petition Foods such as pinto beans pasta rice bread bananas potatoes and peas should be included No food even high carbohydrate food should be eaten an hour or less before competition Nausea or vomiting may result from the food in your stomach High sugar food such as candy or soft drinks may produce low blood sugar This makes you feel tired andor weak and may actually inhibit your performance The only thing you need just before competition is plain cool water so you do no overheat Food Power A Coaches Guide to is available Improving Performance from the heals of your ruby slippers and say “I wish I were in Kansas” you have about as good a chance of really getting a free trip as if you accept a free vacation promotion Let me give you some free advice Nothing is free There are no free microwave ovens no free trips no free lodging or free family barbecue grills Anyone who has spent 90 minutes listening to a timeshare presentation knows that whatever they give you it’s not worth it went to one about three years ago and I can barely talk about it now without provoking a nervous twitch "No thank you I’m not interested no no no a thousand times no no not if an angel landed right on this table and told me to I’m not interested in this timeshare” said The lesson I learned is that you should not accept even a small gift if in a you’re not really interested timeshare Also there are many reputable time share operations that don’t use high pressure sales tactics Like any consumer purchase you have to shop around However gifts and promises of free vacations continue to be a widely used marketing tool of timeshares And you can hardly fault people for trying to cash in on something advertised as Consumer “free” TiMEtt i year months step Hoist your sail Dear John Life is filled with nothing but unNo one cares satisfying relationships whether I live or die No one ever shows any concern No one is there to meet my needs This is not the way it is supposed to be Where are all those “Supposedly Christian People?” Signed Adrift in the Sea Dear Adrift It’s not the world that’s out of kilter It’s your perception The world is full of caring people when you know how to find them But it doesn’t start with them It starts with you The 1th Step Prayer as it has come to be known talks about this concept specifically when it emphasizes that we should be comforting rather than seeking to be comforted that we should be rather than seeking to understanding be understood that we should love rather than seeking to be loved As difficult as it may be to accept and understand it all starts with you You are the master of your destiny We all are CONFIDENTIALLY: Some people come into our lived and quickly go Others stay for a while and only they are actualand ly Western “United” They obviously have caught on that many people throw out junk mail before they read it Your should be that the carries an eight cent postage meter mark which is bulk rate rather than express Your other clue should be that it says something like “you must answer this offer within 72 hours of receiving it to claim your gift” They must be telepathic How else would they know when you received the promotion especially since it is sent bulk rate The first rule of consumerism is buyer beware Get all offers in writing and read the fine print One of these promotions coming out of Dallas states that you must bring your spouse with you to the presentation and that the head of the household must show proof of a $25000 income This all in fine print Some states are starting to regulate timeshare promotions more regularly Maryland requires timeshare promoters to register with the state real estate commission Maryland also has passed a law stating that prize winners cannot be required to listen to a sales or buy any product in conpresentation junction with the promotion Texas and New York require the odds of winning a particular prize be clearly the meeting of the local merchants and the school district I am always encouraged by this type of cooperation and communicaI applaud this tion in our community effort In spite of the fact that I will conI tinue to encourage this cooperation must state I still feel the merchants in this area are still ingnoring the fact that many of us still shop “up north” due to the much higher cost of things here As many in the area make a trip about once a month or so for doctors apetc I don’t consider the pointments trip an added expense This old line that runs up the that it’s “shipping” When is prices pretty transparent price to a local quoting an merchant I’ve been told “I can’t even get it that cheap at wholesale” I can’t believe that the northern merchants are selling below cost! We aren’t just talk- - ing nickles and dimes either I purchased an item for $1395 last week and found a better quality item “up north” the next day for $895! It wasn’t on sale or a come on gimmick but their everyday price 1 have honestly made several efforts to stay down here and I do pick up some sale items (although sale prices many times just equal the regular prices elsewhere or the items are Regretfully the high prices in effect most of the time and the or unavailable situation will keep me doing the biggest part of my shopping “up north” I am truly glad to see the cooperative spirit of our school district but as a taxpayer I would also hope they would be frugal with the funds they must spend and get the best deal for our dollar Teresa Moore Outback in Utah Continued from Front Page after which sagging trusses shed thick onto layers of plaster from its the main level To save the floor from this great weight plus that added by rain and snow Rex opened gaps in the flooring to shunt the plaster into the basement where it squats in morose unwholesome looking dirt volcanoes further defiled by miscellaneous litter drifting in through gaping window holes Ducking under a sagging stairway held in place by timbers he placed I was usherd through the back door once a basement to the refreshment area now the “safest place” in the building he said The from above were t piles of enormous A gaping hole the entrance into a concrete walk-irefrigerator in one dark corner glowered sullenly column a On a central support makeshift ashtray swung on a rusty nail in the crosswinds I peered in the the floor above openings through and my glance carried up through rafters sagging roof trusses and into the sky It was a gloomy place and I felt that if anyone had ever laughed there it was a very long time ago We sneaked back out under the falling staircase held in place by his timbers r frozen in like a suspended guillotine Resolute weather beaten Rex toils alone in an abandoned desolate land The day was pleasant due to a cloudy sky but I wondered how he could function on a day when its western exposure would make the town an outpost of hell In July and August the searing sun vaults over the eastern each morning to slash the harsh landscape with blades of fire splintering the cool night air driving it under rotting timbers and deep into old mine tunnels and shafts to wait out the scorching blast Nevertheless during three major booms thousands of people called it home Beginning in 1892 three tidal waves of prosperity each flushed with frenzied prospectors and speculators predators swept across the salt flats up the Deep Creek slopes and into the mineralized province surrounding Gold Hill Each wave crested briefly then broke and ebbed draining people and their precious belongings back down to the outside world leaving in their wake only the clutter of living The middle wave established a railroad the “Deep Creek Cannonball” a newspaper the “Gold Hill News” and the hollow promise of a plotted 40 acre townsite (Carr 1972) The reality that developed however was shacks shanties and all the necessary apparatus for all the standard diversions and nefarious pursuits of living Crannies s those ghastly wooden rest rooms (I used as a kid) were often perched over abandoned mine shafts some in mid street It was a practical system for keeping drunks and burros from falling to their doom during the night while providing for natural needs at the same time The system also eliminated the need for any unprofitable digging allowing every working adult to gouge the depths for riches or to work for or otherwise relieve the luckier ones of their loot They took all they could get and left behind only gave nothing tokens of their lust for riches on with homesites strewn the miscellaneous debris of a typical intense mining economy I once worked in a small mining town in central Utah and saw prosperity sink into panic followed by abandoned ruins and finally rotting timbers and sagebrush Shards of crockery china and glass glitter on the hillsides of modern Gold Hill and like the dreams of riches that took them there they lay shattered in the shadscale shadows on the sunbaked golden hills forgotten land Utah’s of a nearly “Outback” but Rex never went underground spent his boyhood in the sun in old Gold Hill Now past 80 apparently in a second prime of life strengthened by a glow of “caring” that must have distilled from heaven he rakes and cleans tidys and hauls beautifying a provisional town that never had a Chamber of Commerce or service clubs or ladies’ societies to sponsor renovation programs rake and He leans on his recalls the time when as kids they contrived a “burro trap” in an overpass tunnel in the main wash below the mills only to have a flash flood plug up the tunnel and rip out the entire superstructure-- to the great distress and puzzled wrath of the mill operators unaware of the true cause We look north across the narrow and Rex valley to a tiny cemetary he resurrected smiles it from a sagebrush oblivion by painting its fence white West across the gulley from the Goodwin building foundations and scars of the century-olreduction mill for Col Woodmans Cane Springs Alvarado and Gold Hill mines stretch in ragged steps up the side of a rocky hill Further around the brow of the hill a modern assemblage of rusting and partially painted iron frames tanks buildings and other imbeckon pressive looking structures modern investors This effort is small compared to the activities of old Gold Hill but it demonstrates the tenacity which will endure as long of as a healthy human imagination and greed prevail Samuel Rex Hudson looks on this modern with disdainful operation suspicion as he rakes away in his Gold Hill He and his wife are making the “difference” the rest of us only talk about and they are doing it away out there in “Utah’s Outback” The Doer by Dinosaur Jim The following poetic ramble was composed in honor of Samuel Rex “The King of Gold HUl” Hudson No undulating seas of ripening grain caressed by Pahvant zephyrs soothe
