looking at his work you wouldn't guess that he is a student who learned his art only three years ago His chairs loveseats and smaller items reflect a mastery of material and design that suggest a much longer involvement Willow furnitue construction volves gathering the willow that grows locally along rivers streams lakes and in marsh lands Mr Clark takes pride in selecting the choicest pieces of both the mature willow and the more delicate and flexible sandbar willow Gathering willow and selecting pieces for the various parts of the furniture is a process that is not only time consuming but also volves a skilled eye and a knowledge of the land The large mature willow is used for the base of each piece while the more flexible sandbar willow is carefully cut bent and nailed into place creating the beautiful curves of the frame as well as the body of the piece A Leland C Smith's Whirligigs whirligig is defined as a "Child’s toy having a whirling motion" But in contemporary America the term is often used to describe objects which are not for children produced primarily Whirligigs belong to a genre of traditional art which is often defined as yard decoration like weathervanes Some are mounted on rooftops some hang from porches and others are mounted on wood or metal supports that stick into the ground The clement which ties together these varied forms is the ability of the object to "whirl" in the wind a leland C Smith retired carpenter creates beautifully constructed and decorated whirligigs An outdoorsman and landscape painter he became interested in bird shaped whirligigs while traveling in Arizona He was intrigued by the pervasive road runner and after seeing a number of wind powered toys employbecame determined to ing that motif make one Judy Jarrow's Braided Rug When asked about her interest in braiding rugs native Salt Lake resident Judy Jarrow relates an unusual story While in the Middle fast doing research for her doctoral dissertation on Arabic literature she became fascinated with traditional weaving Upon her return home she began working with fiber and soon became interested in rug braiding- -a traditional Utah fiber art After learning the basic procedure and spending many hours experimenting with materials and techniques she has perfected the art of making beautiful and durable rag rugs Braided rugs firmly enough to prevent them from wearing unevenly or coming apart is a process that requires both skill and labor Both of these qualities are exemplified in the heart shaped rug now on display The Folk Art Exhibit
