Show Pap - (ffommenta All my good intentions last week to really get on the ball and write teresting columns are fading fad I want to do humor - everything is better with humor But all the things have been thinking aKout lately aren’t funny Of course the legislature is in session and that is enough to strike terror in need to the hearts of even the brave ring up Alan bibson at the Times News in Nephi and get the quote about the legislature being in session And watching Governor Bangcrtcr on the tube yap about the serious education crisis Utah and suggest the aspirin cures of eliminating Kindergarten and Drivers Ed or use “volunteers" is pathetic (I’ve thought with the salaries we pay teachers they are practically volunteers) After a lot of thought have developed some pretty strong attitudes about the education mess Education is what makes a democracy work Education is what enhances standards of living Education is what sets us apart from third world countries Education is the key that guarantees the great American dreams can come true So why are we so damned apathetic? Oh we click ou tongues shake our heads mumble and grumble but do we stand up and fight? Education is the best example of a disgraceful bureaucracy we have going It is so bogged down with Jia Tburt I'SPS Millard County 2 SJji 30 19M " iSue TO THE assisassistants experts specialists tant’s assistants and experts from out of town it is a wonder it hasn't ground to a screeching halt If private industry ran their business is a similar fashion they would be opening paupers prisons on every corner just to accommodate the crowd But as long as they can lay the guilt trip on the taxpayer about the “good of the children" we’ll panic and keep pumping in money until we topple over from the weight After parents and family the most important people in a child’s life are teachers And where are they - at the bottom of of the totem pole They have the weight of the entire system on their back plus the community pressure to teach And do we pay them? Hell no we want dedication But they get summers off Big deal After spending 180 days cooped up with anywhere from 30 to 180 kids and meeting all the criteria set down by the experts and still trying to squeeze a little teaching into the day they need the summer off Besides we demand they get recertified every so often so they need some time to go to school themselves was thinking the other day over the 25 years I have had kids in school I have stomped off to the school to raise hell if I didn't like something and have also tried to pass on to the proper person positive things but never once did call the state school folks Continued on page 3 EDITOR Pay attention to PTA Amazing what you can’t mail Postal rules and regulations must cause you the mailing public to blink when you try to understand why some things are done the way they are Not to worry Sometimes we do too hope that I can explain some of it and provide you with tidbits that will help you do and know what us can we to to get help you When it comes to regulations International mail takes the cake What you can and can’t mail depends on the country that you are sending it to For example don't plan to mail any leeches or silkworms to Cyprus Not to be outdone is Brazil They don’t want skim milk in tin cans Whole or 2 percent milk seems to be okay One would think that there is a “save the fly” lobby in strong Botswana as they don’t allow flypaper to be mailed to it Denmark doesn’t in small tobacco want t packages to which cigarette papers are attached" Regular is alright Ecuador bars "maps showing the territory of Ecuador with incorrect in the mail boundaries" Great Britain and Northern Ireland refuse to allow horror comics in the mail Nicaragua prohibits "Communist material or literature" in the mail but appears not to mind Soviet made tanks and helicopters or Cuban advisors Japan tends to prohibit little while Italy prohibits a lot For example in Italy you can't send toys unless made of wood playing cards coral mounted in any way typewriter ribbons hair and articles made of hair and bells and other musical instruments And finally the USSR They seem to ban everything So when you get ready to mail that package overseas check with us first the We’ll try and help untangle confusion As I understand it the Delta South Elementary PTA is in the process of organizing an open meeting in which parents who would like to air their would grievances may do so freely like to urge parents to take note of this meeting when announced and attend Everybody seems to have a complaint or two occasionally and this might be a good way to get them taken care of Parents of kindergarteners for stance may wonder why the $30 which they paid for snacks this year (which was $20 two years ago and included both snacks and books) is no longer going toward snacks (which have been but towards books ondiscontinued) ly It turns out that some of the parents were not informed of these things last summer when they enrolled their children Other people may wonder about the school lunch incentive program and the quality and availability of textbooks mentioned in another issue of the Chronicle Progress Others may have reservations about the new plan in the South Elementary to keep students after school once they've been late three times The plan sounds great to some and to others who may favor other approaches to the problem At the end of the year parents who haven’t been able to find all of their library books receive a note saying that the fee for each hardbound book (no matter what size) is S900 The books that my kids bring home from Delta So Elementary always look fresh off the press perhaps some of the money earmarked for the media center could be diverted toward the books so lacking in the individual school rooms At any rate it doesn’t hurt to air our opinions and come up with a few new ideas when we have gripes particularly when someone is willing to listen It's awfully hard for principals and other personnel to please everyone and still make the best decisions for the majoriand a little support ty of students would probably be appreciated Sincerely Denise Nielson Oak City Utah Community Calendar Jan Feb 25 Prenatal classes Tuesdays Delta Medical Center Call Community for information Weight control classes Tuesdays Delta Community Medical Center Call Delta Area Bv for more information -
