The Southwest Symphony is a organization that was originally a community strings choir. One of the symphonys founders, Norman Fawson, said he felt like it would non-prof- it be better to construct a part of Dixie State symphony than just stick with the small group of musicians he had been part of before. A couple others and I decided to try and bring together individuals who just wanted to keep playing music and that loved it around the community, Fawson said. I convinced the head of the music department at the time, Dr. Goner, to direct the symphony, and that is how it became lege. Col- Current director Gary Caldwell, associate professor of music, said the symphony gives the students, faculty and community somewhere to play their instruments of choice, and it gives everybody a sense of camaraderie.
