Show THURSDAY, MARCH THE SUN 8, 2001 Art Department hosting two exhibitions By Sun News Services The Art Program at Dixie State College announces two new exhibitions on display through March 30. The first exhibition located in the North Plaza Gallery Space is titled "All in the Fami" ly.1 The show incorporates works by Helen Hepworth, her daughter; Roxanne Hepworth Olson, and her grandson, Heron Hanson. Helens work reflects her mastery of the watercolor media and focuses on vintage trucks and automobiles. These include a variety of personal forms, location compositions and select auto presentation. Helen has taken numerous art courses at Dixie State as well' as at other art institutions. Her art has been exhibited throughout the state of Utah and is in the private collections of various art patrons. Roxannes variations on abstraction and figurative elements are much more direct with a concentration and focus on color, form and movement. Mixed media is demonstrated with an emphasis through oil paint. She states, "My work reflects my personality and lifestyle. It is a vehicle that serves as an expressive purpose. My goal is to create an environment where the spirit becomes isolated and the abstract expressionist quality creates spontaneity." Her works denotes intuition and technical application within the combination of nature and emotion. Herons work is a combination of painted expression surfaces along with formed and constructed mixed media sculpture. He has worked as a graphic artist for Instasign in Salt Lake City for the past eight years along with private work in illustration, logo design and custom murals. Heron states, "Commercial art is sometimes very difficult to market due to competitors and underbidding. My personal style varies with my mood. I focus on what is available and what I want to use as media. "Airbrush has become my favorite graphic tool. I really enjoy creating large format art work with the use of reproductions of familiar Pop Art icons. I like to question traditional forms and am not afraid to address controversy to establish a true definition as to What is Art?" The second display is located in the Graff Fine Arts Center Gallery Space is title "Insect Ensemble." Works by artist Nancy Romney Hoy and William Mason Hoy are exhibited. Nancy has been drawing and painting off and on most of her life. A series of insects and their nesting environments were painted for her husband, William Hoy, and entomologist, as teaching tools. She describes her work, "We not only see with our eyes but also through our minds. Creating form, color and beauty of light and its reflections teaches the individual to truly see the world. This innately enhances ones vision and knowledge to capture ones soul and imagination. Nature is the greatest of all artistry and the more we learn to see, the more enlightened we are to the true wonders of the world. In the past, Nancys work has been predominantly portraits of the human condition. She has embraced the power to capture character and inner soul. Though she has been awarded numerous prizes and sold various works, she considers it all to be just practice for the next endeavor She concludes, "Art takes ten percent talent and 90 percent sweat and perseverance." Recently, she has been working on converting a 2.1 acre piece of land in Veyo, Utah, into a functional home and Persian Garden. She is also working on a large scale mural for the Tonaquint Nature Center Gallery hours for both the North Plaza and Graff Fine Arts Budding are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. E Editor hughesfamI ansrc vision, but the most senous risk involved concerns fetal exposure to accutane, which can result in birth defects. Because of this, female patients are required to use two forms of birth control during treatment as a preventative measure. More recently, since 1998, the FDA published a ruling requiring the warning section on accutane labels to include an increased risk of depression and mood changes. However, Bull states that, "because Accutane is the only currently avadable product that can cure cystic acne, FDA permitted the continued marketing of the product in spite of the known risks." Many of the side effects, however; can be relieved with a daily dose of vitamin E, prescribed with the Accutane. De Craig Booth, a physician who often refers patients to dermatologists stated that, "more people are on accutane than you think; its becoming more common," and Scott Condie, a physicians assistant working at Southwest Skin and Cancer, reported that they see between five and six Accutane patients a day, half of which are college aged students. For many the benefit of relief outweigh the financial (around 1,500 dollars) and physical (dry skin) costs of treatment. Accutane is not for everyone, but for those students who do struggle with severe acne, this pill, which can restore confidence and self esteem, is truly a miracle. com For many, the scars of adolescence, including the physical and emotional turmoil caused by acne, takes years to heal. s Rising above creams and cleansers, and antibiotics is the prescription drug Accutane, shown to be an effective cure for severe cystic acne. This wonder drug, however, comes not without its risks and side effects. Therapy consists of an oral pill taken daily with food for the penod of five to six months; monitored monthly by a dermatolotopi-cal- gist. Physically it acts aggressively to shrink the size of pores in restricting the amount of od produced. But, unlike other forms of treatment, the results of Accutane are permanent and is therefore only prescnbed in cases that have previously been unresponsive to conventional therapy. Avadable on the market since 1989, Accutane has always been surrounded by controversy concerning the extreme risks involved in treatment. Jonca Bull, the Deputy Director for the office of drug evaluation stated that "the FDA must constantly balance public need for access to effective therapies against the risks associated with their use." Side effects associated with accutane range from dry skin to decreased night 652-779- 'Jvj fI'J OFF m ALL CHlSREN'&FfcgECE Clockwise from above, Have Just One Y2K d-M- by Heron Hanson; Roxanne Hepworth Olson; Show Choose from vests, jacket, and pull overs Assorted Colors 23 March BabiesYou Cant Dogma by ar One, Two for the by Helen Hepworth.
