Show S6 THURSDAY, THE SUN SWAC 7, 2001 Tournament What Dixie needs from its fans this weekend The Best and worst of Dixie basketball 2000-200- 1 so much in all of my life. By The Dixie Sun With the exception MARCH of the last few games, the Bums Arena, for the most part, could have been easily confused with a monastery, when judged by its decibel levels. Fans apparently thought that whispering in such a venue was a social faux paux. Let alone, yelling and screaming like college basketball fans everywhere else do. Finally, during the Rebels final homes-tanthe students began yelling like they were actually, well, college students. Crowd noise not only actually dnbbled down to the floor level of the arena, and most importantly, the Colonels Clubs pacemakers began to work overtime. The games were exciting, and the players, feeding off the crowds energy, were able to nse to the occasion and win the ballgames. That energy will be needed more than ever this weekend, so Dixie State College fans need to do more than just show up for the games, they need to bring their larynx. But more than bnng than just bringing a voice box, fans need use it and abuse it to the point of exhaustion. The SWAC Tournament wont be the cakewalk for our mens basketball team that some fans think it will be. The energy from the crowd will be needed more than ever this weekend, so Dixie State College fans need to do more than just show up for the games, they need to bring their larynx. But more than bring than just bringing a voice box, fans need use it and abuse it to the point of exhaustion. Best entrance ... Best request for less homework ... Brett Palmer. The loudest the Bums Arena got this season was when Palmer, a forward, took a pass from Brandon Burke, darted towards the basket, and laid 8 the ball in the hoop to seal Dixies win. The way the crowd reacted to Palmers score you would have thought the score was Undoubtedly, nothing gave Rebel fans more pleasures this season than to see No. 25 pull the warmup over his head as he ran to the scorers table. walk-o- n 80-5- 60-5- Best place to watch a game ... Best street clothes ... Practically anytime the mens basketball team stepped to the free throw line. Close home losses for the Rebel women. Coty Bundy. After being sidelined with an injury, Bundy felt no need to dress up when he had a and jeans in his closet. Living in England will do that to a person. Col- lege cheerleader performs a stunt during the first half of the Rebels win over Snow College. himself into foul trouble two seconds into the game like he did last year. Clark proved invaluable in rebounding and scoring. Lindsay Heiselbetz went from a seldom-use- d reserve a season ago into one of the Rebels most formidable weapons this season for coach Dave LaVetters team. Suzanne Jolley also evolved into a good player, as she overcame injuries to contribute. Best interpreter ... Stephen Palmer. Need to talk to Jaime Lloreda? Its best to bnng an interpreter. Even though the quotes might not be the best. Apparently, according to Jaime, Utah is colder than Panama. Best change of style ... s Womens basketball team. The just below the knee signify team unity, and the Rebels seemed a better team sweat-band- once they started to wear them. A1 Williams. Sure, his game improved, we miss the headband. Politest interviewee ... John Giannoni. I have never been Worst moments ... Best moments ... When Candace Baldwin times a pass and steps in front of it to race the right just other way. The fear in an opposing point guards eyes after Eddie Shelby and A1 Williams have taken turns picking off his last five passes. Jamie Phillips getting hot late in the game against Utah Valley in the Bums Arena. Marcus Banks alley-oo- p pass to Eddie Shelby late in the game at Orem. Shelby rose high above the basket to catch the pass and smoothly slammed it down to seal the Rebel win. Snows Travis Visenun foolishly handthe Rebels the game in Ephraim. ing Watching Marcus Banks race down the court past defendeis, casually jogging down the court with their back turned to the Banks, who can do nothing as Banks blurs past them. Any interview with Banks or Baldwin was always a joy. We hope they go on to accomplish great things. Watching the mens team cut down the nets after they clinched the SWAC title with their win against Utah Valley. Best moment that has yet to occur, but we hope comes true ... Worst change of style ... photo by Brooke Hansen The Bums Arena, where the Rebels men team went undefeated this season. So many of them: Josh Clark showed an amazing level of improvement, particularly by not getting Dixie State Best dressed ... Tony Simmons. We love to see Tony play and all, we just wish he wouldnt tuck in his short (which for Simmons includes pulling the waistband of his shorts as far as he can in both directions) while standing in front of press row. Most improved players ... A reminded Vincent to tell his mom to take it easy on Dominique. (Eds note: Im working on it, Dominique. I think Im beginning to wear down her resistance). Casey McClellan, assistant coach for the womens basketball team. Worst entrance ... Even with hosting the tournament at home, the Rebels have their work cut out for them. But it is equally important, if not more so, that our womens basketball team get support from the student body and fans this weekend. Candace Baldwin & Co. deserve it, and with some help from the decibels from the stands, they might be able to pull off a SWAC title. So, my little friends in red, come support our Rebels and be prepared to wear out a lung while cheering for a Dixie victory. Dominique Townes. Townes, who takes an English class for the mother of Stephen Vincent, editor in chief of The Dixie Sun, sir-re- d but To see both our Rebel teams cut down the nets this Saturday in the Bums Arena, after earning their way into the national tournament, at which we hope to see some more Dixie scissors. |
