There is little active protoplasm stirring within them, and naturally the dirty sidewalk bespattered with tobacco juice does not stimulate optimism or produce elevating thought ; the outlook is more or less hopeless and the conversation is pessimistic The individual, on the other hand, who and fault-findinin has walked the halls of learning and partaken of the spirit of idealism and culture has a broad horizon before him he looks for the brillant colors in the eastern sky at sun-risthe sunshine means warmth, life and light, his ear is alert for the songs of the birds, the depths of the blue sky stimulate thought, imagination, and a desire to reach but in an 'effort to solve the mysteries of the universe ; with the soil beneath his feet he associates green pastures, fields of grain, and all the bounteous harvests of the earth, the red hills are full of beauty, the flowers full of perfume and busy bees, in fact, the world is an interesting, paradise where God is supreme. If education in Dixie has produced ten such individuals and reduced the number of the former class in like proportion it has performed a wonderful work. It has actually produced many tens of cultured young men and women, and has reduced materially the loafing class. g. e, life-teemin- g, Opportunities That increased educational facilities in any community means increased cultural advantages goes without saying. Education means, largely, increased opportunities in art, music, literature, science, and other subjects. Our schools bring every year to our communities noted lecturers, lyce-ucourses, debates, operas, dramatic performances, and many attractions that are uplifting, wholesome, stimulating, and truly educational'.
