Make friends with the county mayor c:"1:141 LAuRIE WILsoN Tom sign me up to be Salt Count y Nlayor Workman's friend Judging by what she pays longtime friend and now County intergovernmental affairs director Gerrie Shaw Workman knows how to reward friendship! Shaw a devoted friend and campaign worker went from !wing a secretary in the Recorder's Office for $1640 an hour in 1900 to intergovernmental affairs director of the county at $5057 an hour in 2001 That's a 200 percent raise in five years! I've al Ways been under the misconception that while govtrnnitnt jobs don't pay as well as the private sector they were stable and had good retiremtnt plans My father and brother both retired from public service Both were engineers and worked för federal agencies for more than 30 years Neither reached the $ IO0000 plus mark But then neither had owned nor run an Arabian horse farm Since Salt Lake County government has recently undergone a change perhaps we should give the mayor the lonellt of the doubt I'm sure in all the organizational overhauls she is doing she will eventually get to human resources and develop a compensation schedule for county employees that considers their fducat ion and previous experience Although she could have borrowed one from any other established county government in the country that would have told her that ynneone with no degree and little relevant experience was not eligible to make $105192 a year But the county communication director (who makes a paltry $79291la year) justifies the wage because Shaw is one of the hardest wtirking people he knows For cryin in the night! I work hard And I have a PhD don't come close to her wages But then I never did payroll accounts receivable and marketing for a hair salon Workman justifies the salary by saying that Shaw "has total authority over the county" That's comforting I thought that is what we electNi Workman for And we pay her $107010 a year I wonder if she has a college degree To be fair it is very difficult to compare experience And I'm sure Shaw has good life experience But no human resource specialist worth hisher salt Ixould ever rate that exiaTience and lack of education as one of the highest paying jobs in county government And while Workman has made admirable progress in getting the county government organized to better serve the people she has shown t extremely poor judgment in this circumstance If they were really good friends Workman could have explained to Shaw that as much as she would like to reward her handsomely she also needed to be accountable to her constituents It doesn't feel good having a county mayor who says "Degrees don't mean anything to me" With education in the crisis it is in our state it is troubling to have the head of one of the largest governmenthl bodies in the state say it has no value What kind of message does that send to our kids? Don't worry about going to college Education isn't really important Just become best buds with someone who the dolts in the county will elect mayor Tom what really gripes me about this whole thing is that as long as we've been friends you have never even offered me a job let alone one that pays over S100000 a year A 4k r " Tom BARBER! your claws pull IAauriea bit and remember victor go the spoils" or was it "It's not what you know but who" Come to think of it it'F both and why are you surprised to see these rules applied in Salt Lake County government when they apply to every government entity from La Verkin to Washing- DC? Granted don't have a clue just what that means but it must really be something To show you just how tough it is to find qualified people to take on such responsi- president and the Lotto winner The problem you are having is in separating those who work for Salt Lake County and those who work for the county government The difference is the people who work for the county are the ones picking up the garbage mowing the grass at the County Complex catching the bad guys and putting out the fires I know there must be more but in the part of the county I live in I'm happy to get three out of the four You will also notice that when things seem to be getting a little tight the government always threatens to cut its work force Just to make sure that you get the message that usually means that police and fire people will be the first to be laid off Don't worry about the grass at the County Complex it will always get mowed because we can't have people driving through thinking we live in a second-clas- s county Laurie I can appreciate your anger looking at all the salaries paid to these officials but you have to remember that the county must compete with the private sector to get good people to take these jobs Think for a minute Where can you get someone who is willing POINTCOUNTERPOINT 10 Salt Lake City Salt take Eye Associates celebrates the New Year by offer:71a Siavings on your LASTIC or CustomLASIK rrOCCZ-Z- CL P I - - 1 - I t - |
