But even without the three rings, Callaway is something special. And then, just around the bend, looms what is said to be the world's e white sand longest inland beach. It stretches over one mile and leads to the shell of a circus Big Top. Thats right, a circus complete with three rings, a carnival midway, rides, a calliope, an band wagon and a paddle steamer riding at anchor alongside a minifleet of rental pleasure boats. Callaway, you see, has its own summer circus school, from June through August for kids from 3 (the youngest registrant allowed) to 83 (the oldest to enroll, so far). Over the past 25 years, the circus program has developed a k k (minimum) to circus curriculum that draws grandparents, their children and their childrens children to sessions that run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Florida State University students teach everything from juggling to high-wir- e walking, tumbling to applying clown make-uThe early sessions are mainly for the younger generation. But many of them cater primarily to adults, paying little if any attention to the needs of the whole family. The following are some outstanding family resorts around the country that want your children along with you. KIAWAH, SOUTH CAROLINA A trio of tots in Impeccable whites trip toward the tennis center for a lesson with one of the pros. The youngest, who looks about 4, is scarcely taller than her racquet. But her tiny size and her age dont matter because she is a guest at Kiawah (KEE-a-wah- ), a family-focuseresort where tennis players of all ages sharpen their games. Kiawah Island, 21 miles south of historic Charleston, is on the South Carolina coast. About 10,000 acres in size, of which only about half are planned for development, its made up of two resort villages, West Beach Village, which opened in 1976 and East Beach Village, a sibling five years younger, plus some private resd idences. The villages, nestled in lush palmetto, pine and oak forests, share a d stretch of wide, beach along the Atlantic, which many beach aficionados consider one of the finest on the East Coast. It's a favorite of all from the sandpail set to early morning joggers who make a vacation ritual of communing with sand, sea and seagulls. Kiawah is also the kind of place that proves you can enjoy a holiday without a car. During the summer months shuttle service is offered continually between the villages. But lots of visitors pass the shuttle by, opting instead for bicycling on the many miles of trails that meander around the island. Planned and developed in harmony with nature and named for the Indians who inhabited the coastal island in the 1600s, Kiawah shelters some 18 species of mammals and more than 140 species of birds. A unique resort option is the jeep safari, a two-hoexcursion into the back woods of the island where participants get a chance to do some shelling, learn about the vegetation, and perhaps meet up vith a whitetail deer or sea turtle. The oceanside villages offer accommodations from an inn to villas and cottages, facilities from restaurants (many family oriented with simple fare) to lounges, pool and play areas, shops and world class golf and tennis facilities. Among the many other family activities are roller skating (skates can be rented), canoeing through Kiawahs salt marsh creeks, sailing, windsurfing, cruises on the Kiawah River and popular island cookouts and oyster roasts with bluegrass music providing an approbate background. Z Families can either set their own recreational pace or enroll the smallfry in one of several programs. Junior tennis camps and clinics are options, and theres an organized summer recreation program for youngsters ages 4 through 17. Theres oven a special youth soccer camp in July for children 8 to 16. Costs vary according to program and age of participants. Most of the year the opulent, grand-scal- e resort in Palm Beach, Fla., caters to d an elegant, clientele, whom what the French are of many call "of a certain age. In the season (winter) bejeweled international society mingles at charity balls in the splendor of the Renaissance-inspired hostelry. They enjoy Florhaute cuisine in the palazzo-lik- e entine Dining room and, of course, prefer traditional white attire for tennis. But, come summer, all this glittering splendor becomes the setting of a summer camp would you believe for kids. Now, mind you, this is far from a sleepaway setting where the small the beds and smack fry short-sheeach other behind the counselors backs. As befitting a resort which has a year-roun- d dress code for all guests just one shade less strict than that of the military, it stresses etiquette and propriety. Invitations have already been extended for the third annual Emily Post Summer Camp for Young People ages 9 to 15 at The Breakers Theres still time to send July an R.S.V.P. While parents (or grandparents) played golf and tennis, sunned and shopped, the kids curriculum encompassed such "essentials as the art of conversation, table manners and ballroom dancing. Naturally the campers observed The Breakers dinner-hour dress code: no T shirts, tank are ever pertops, jeans or cut-ofmitted at the evening meal for the younger set. Naturally, not all youngsters take to this which fork to use stuff like they would to a trip to Disney World. Although there are no reports of children being lead screaming to camp a discreet one, of course. laugh Dance class comes next. Sorry, kids, no break dancing at the Breakers. Betty Montgomery, who with her husband George ha3 been teaching dance there since 1949, reports that most of the kids were intrigued by ballroom steps. Lunch time was special. One day it was shared with the grown-ups- ; other days with the campers peers. Afternoons the campers joined in the hotels Supervised Youth Program with other youngsters vacationing at the resort. That meant such events as a bike trip to Lake Worth, volleyball on conthe beach, a sandcastle-buildin- g test and the use of video games. For the campers the grand finale was Graduation Banquet. While their proud families looked on, the group, clad in their finest attire, curtsied, bowed, received diplomas and a copy of the latest edition of the Emily Post etiquette uide. And several kids positively beamed when paired with parent or grandparent during the ballroom dancing that always accompanies The Breakers dinner hour Not all lessons stay learned, of course. Put a child back in the wild and he reverts to the way of the jungle. One grandmother has already called The Breakers to report she is sending her brood back to the hotel this summer for a refresher. fs that how would be some of last years enrollees did have to be cajoled into attending. Reportedly, more than one youngster was promised a stay at real camp later on or offered another lure like that trip to Disney World. Guess what? To the surprise of many, camp wasnt yucky at all. Heres how it went and will continue this summer. The program starts off with a welcoming reception on Sunday followed by dinner en famille. Classes really commence on Monday with a session on introductions and conversation. The kids receive an amusingly illustrated text, showing them what to say when. Theyre told that when introducing boys and girls of about the same age, the girls name comes first. (Lois, this is Super Man. Super, this is Lois Lane.)
