Newhousa News Service BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Did you ever find yourself at a party, backed into a corner by fear, too shy to even make your way to the cheese dip? Or trying to think of something witty to say when youve just met the bosss wife? Maybe Don Gabor can help. n Gabor, a expert, makes his living by telling people how to relax at parties, make friends and have a decent conversation. Look for hot buttons subjects that really turn people on, Gabor says. You find someones hot button and starting a conversation becomes no problem. Ending a conversation becomes a problem. Gabor admits he has plenty of hot buttons and not a shy bone in his body, so starting a conversation with him is never hard. His hot buttons include cooking, roller skating and dancing. A big party can turn even the most successful businessman into a quivering, tongue-tie- d wallflower, says Gabor, whose classes at New York Citys Westwinds Learning Center are mostly made up of successful business people. People are skilled in their field of knowledge, but once you take them out of that field, theyre like a fish out of water, says Gabor, who was in Birmingham on Meeting others is frustrating for a lot of people, Gabor says, but its a skill that has become increasingly important in todays mobile society. Many people rely on bars, but that can just add to the frustration, he says. Gabor encourages people to entertain in their homes as an alternative to bars. People feel more comfortable in their homes," says Gabor, who wrote How to Start a Conversation and Make Friends. "There are things to draw on for conversation. All art, books, music, food, you have to do is look around in the home environment, you can share part of your life with people and thats where the friendship connection starts. People trying to meet people should go places where they have fun, can relax and have something in common with others there, Gabor says, like a health club, church or political organization. Gabor himself met his wife of three months when she signed up for guitar classes that he happened to be teaching. When meeting someone on the street, look for things about them to comment on, Gabor suggests. For example, a tennis racket or book in a persons hand may be a topic to talk about. Their clothes may be unusual or soclologlst-cum-conversatio- something youve been looking for and can nurture a conversation. When commenting on something to a new acquaintance, give a compliment, then follow with an question, says Gabor, who also writes children's textbooks and fiction and how-t- o books for adults. If you cant find someone's hot buttons, then you aren't asking the right questions,. Gabor says. Close-ende- d questions (How are you? Do you like that book?) are fine, he says, for fishing for Information, but they should be followed with an d question that allows the person to express some thoughts and feelings (Why do you like that book?) T d Asking questions encourages a person to elaborate and show your interest in him, Gabor says. Listen for key words in an acquaintances conversation, Gabor suggests, and follow up by asking about those subjects. . People reveal much more than they realize," Gabor says. They kind of hold up title balloons or signs that say 'ask me about this, but I dont want to bore you.' Encourage him to talk about his interests. Body language is an important facet of communication, Gabor says. Communication is 70 percent nonverbal, 20 percent tone of voice and only 10 percent content, he says. open-ende- open-ende- Awkward situations can be SOFTEN-e- d by using various body language techniques, Gabor says. SOFT-- : EN stands for: Smile, open posture (no crossed arms or legs), fprward lean, touch (a handshake or friendly ges- ture), eye contact and nod. Body language speaks before you do, Gabor says. It communicates not only how youre feeling, but sends signals that say 'Im open, I enjoy talking with ; : ; j ' and Im receptive. ;; The thought of hosting a party sends some of the t most people into a tizzy, Gabor says, but its really very easy. There are three major elements for a good party: Good food, good mood and good conversation. Food should be simple, easy to prepare and easy to eat, Gabor says, and should be located in a place that lends itself to easy circulation. Dont put a table of food up against a wall; instead, put it In the center of the room so people can gather around it. Themes often create a good mood at parties, Gabor says. Or, have people bring things that can stimulate conversation, like food or records. Good conversation is the responsibility of the host, who must make sure all his guests meet each other. A good host also will make sure he tips guests off to interests they may have in common in other words, Gabor says, a host will know his guests hot buttons. , self-assur- ", After 30 Years, 4Herk Cargo Plane Is Still Rolling Off Assembly Line By Les Seago Associated Press Writer MEMPHIS, Tenn. Thats very, very good, said Maj. Mike Perini, an Air Force spokesman in Washington, D.C. In fact, its the safest tactical airlifter the Air Force has ever flown. The just seemed to be one of those great airplanes from the first time she flew, said Leo Sullivan, a Lockheed test pilot who was aboard when it the first production took to the air April 7, 1955. Its just about as good as youre going to get when youve got hard work to do, added Lt. Col. George Wilson, a Tennessee Air National Guard pilot who has logged more in 19 than 5,000 hours in the years, including combat tours in Vietnam. The was conceived in the Korean War when the Air Force needed a cargo plane that could haul tanks, bulldozers, artillery, ammunition and troops directly and swiftly to the battle field. At the time, Lockheed expected to build about 300 Hercules, but so far it has built more than 1,700 of the planes in more than 40 versions. are working in 57 countries and every month, three more planes roll off the assembly line. I guess well keep building it as long as people want it, and that may be forever, said Joe Dabney, a Lockheed spokesman. 10 More This Year in the Air There are now 725 Force, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve, and there will be 10 more by the end of the year. The Air Force is now buying only one model of the the MC-13- 0 Combat Talon II, designed for Special Operations Forces. The Air Force plans to buy 20 of the planes, with the last to be delivered in 1992. A cumbersome plane, is built for work, not for the . beauty. Its fuselage was designed around a cargo hold.
