Show Sunday, April 7, 1985 The Sait Lake Tribune, ir Wheelchair archers are right on target ri By Judy Magid Tribune Lifestyle Writer When Neroli Fairhall appeared in the 1985 Summer Olympics Parade in Los Angeles in hfer wheelchair, the crowd roared its approval of the archer from New Zealand. There was some talk of disqualifying her because of the 'advantage of shooting while sitting, said Fred Jepsen, Salt Lake City, a member of the 1980 United States Olympic team (The one that didnt go, he said with . , a sigh). I tried shooting while sitting once. The other Olympic archers insisted that Ms. Fairhall compete. Larry Smith and Kim Holding shoot while sitting in wheelchairs without worrying about which stance is easier. More important, they serve as coaches for the Junior Olympic Archery Development group in the area. Mr. Jepsen is the coach. Weve been coaching these kids for about a year now and were proud to take 10 fie boys and five girls to Las Vegas last fall for the Tropi-can- a Indoor Archery Tournament Championships to compete with kids from all over the country, Mr. Smith said. We did pretty well, too. The Las Vegas tournament is billed as the worlds largest indoor tournament and is open to worldwide competition. Junior Olympic Archery Mr. Smith and Mr. Holding are members of the National Wheelchair Archery Association and the Utah Some advantage! . Wheelchair Archery Association. Thats part of the reason they got started with the Junior Olympic Archery Development program. We were acquainted with a youngster, Gavin Mower, who has spina bifida. He is in a wheelchair and want- ed to Kim Holding, left, coaches Eric Glines while Justin Jepsen, center, waits his turn during the Junior Olympic Archery Development session for area youngsters. I I Ann Landers participate in a sports Mr. Smith began. Once he started archery lessons, there were other kids who wanted to participate, Mr. Holding continued. With the cooperation of the lanes here at Uintah Archery, we set up a program, program.. I wish I had had a program like this when I started. Hooked For Life Mr. Jepsen said his interest in archery began when he was given a bow while in college. I didnt even know how to string a bow. I decided to take a class at the University of Utah. During the quarter, the instructor announced a tournament at Brigham Young University. Two of us decided to go down. We took second and third places. We were hooked for life. JOAD stresses development and safety. Ive taken part in a lot of demonstrations, Mr. Jepsen said. After weve done balloons and other targets, I call for a volunteer to stand on the stage with an apple on his or her head. We talk about William Tell and his son. I always get a lot of volunteers. The person picked as volunteer will watch in horror as I aim an arrow at a mannequin head with an apple on it and hit the head right between the eyes. Arrows are not toys and archery is not a joke. So many things can go a string can break, some wrong noise can startle the archer. We make quite an impression. Besides, he says, "William Tell killed someone with an arrow. Im not sure it wasnt his son. True Lifetime Sport There are levels of accomplishment in the JOAD program. The first level calls for hitting 30 of 300 shots at nine meters. Chris Holding, my nephew, is 15 and has shot 270 of 300 possible points at 18 meters, the highest junior development level, Kim Holding said. Shooting 290 of 300 at 13 meters is Olympic shooting. Chris has shot a 289, he added. Mr. Smith and Mr. Jepsen stress that archery is a lifetime sport. Ms. Fairchild, who competed in archery in the 1984 Olympics, competed in the 1956 Olympics in the equestrian events. She was paralyzed in a riding accident. She came back as an archer last year, Mr. Smith pointed out. c? Though both Mr. Smith and Mr. Holding use mechanical bows to enable them to pull enough weight, they know that the kids, sitting or standing, can learn to shoot Olympic style. I never had any interest in archery until my brother started with these lanes, Mr. Holding said.
