Dressed Up To Get Messed Up" by - ) Record review Roomful of Blues (Varrick Records) is a joyful evocation of early rhythm n blues styles by a veteran New England band that employs horns with real rock verve. Vocalist and tenor saxophonist Greg Piccolo has a finely honed sensibility for creating songs true to the 1950s style, like the tfjle cut and What Happened to the Sugar (In My Lemonade)? and Lets Ride. Among the other pleasures on this record, besides the punching horn section and Piccolos eclectic vocals, are Ronme Earls authentically raunchy surfin guitar solos, vocal harmonies in the doo wop tradition from 14 Karat Soul and a rousing guest vocal appearance by Kim Wilson of the Fabulous Thunderbirds. His instrumental style is as indebted to such jazzmen as Wes Montgomery and George Benson as it is to blues players like B B. King. Son Seals is a much grittier blues-mawith a searing guitar style and a raw, visceral blues voice. His highly charged style owes as much to rock and funk as it does to traditional blues, but the result is pure, delta-ric- h Tore Up by Nappy Brown with the Heartfixers (Landslide Records) marks the return to recording of one of the most distinctive voices of 1950s rhythm n blues Napoleon "Nappy Brown. And judging from this record, he still possesses a most distinct and powerful voice. Brown has a remarkable range capable of deep bass sonorities and high plangent wails, coupled with a pliant fluidity that enables him to shift gears in the middle of a phrase, and to sing a wide variety of material comfortably. On this album he does everything from raucous blues to tender ballads. L One of the most exuberant and dynamic voices of early 1960s rhythm n blues was Gary U.S. Bonds, whose recent recording comeback has been given a helping hand by Bruce Springsteen and his former band guitarist, Miami Steve Van Zandt. Now the early records that made Bonds reputation, and a lasting impression on Springsteen and his cohorts, are available in a fine reissue set, The Best of Gary U.S. Bonds (MCA Records). Among the highlights are a rousing You Can Make It If You Try and a sweetly sensual version of Bob Dylans Tonight Ill Be Staying Here With You. The Heartbreakers, a neobl- trio provide able support, aided and abetted by two keyboardists and a horn section. ues-rock The diversity to be found in temporary blues is perfectly trated by the contrast offered es. conillus- Here, in all its infectious glory, is Bonds growling, steam-rollin- g voice doing such classics of early rock n roll as New Orleans, Quarter to in two new records from Chicago blues guitarists: Nightflight by Fenton Robinson (Alligator Records) and Bad Axe by Son Seals (Alligator). This is an altogether superior recording of Chenier in other departments as well. Riccardo Chailly, conducting the National Philharmonic, leads an urgent, pliant, yet tightly controlled reading of the score, and Montserrat the other vocal leads Caballe as Madeleine and Leo Nucci are in top form. In addias Gerard tion, theres luxury casting in small parts, and fine digital sound. Speaking of digital, London has begun digitally remastering its pioneering recording of Wagners Ring des Nibelungen cycle with Das Rhein-gol- d and Siegfried. The performances as conducted by Georg Solti and featuring such Wagner giants as Kirsten Flagstad, Birgit Nilsson, Hans Hotter and George London long status, ago took on but the revamped sound heard here is nothing short of astounding. In its present format, this Ring is in many ways the greatest recording ever made. near-legenda- Another opera set definitely worth first-evs investigating is of Emanuel recording Le Roi Malgre Lui (The ReRCA-Erato- Cha-brie- luctant King). ams work got booed after its premiere during 1983s- New York Philharmonic Horizons Festival, but considering the source (the 1950s academic crowd), it rumpled-sui- t was quite a compliment. Grand Pianola Musics tongue-in-chee- k title hints at what you can expect an absolutely adorable piece in a quasiminimalist style, superbly orchestrated. Eight Lines Wilsons orchestral reworking of the Reich Octet is, of course, seminal minimalism, and it actually comes off more convincingly than the original. Wilsons conducting, the instrumental playing and the recording are maximal indeed. - er The rs program annotator for this album states that if Le Roi had a decent libretto, it would have rivaled Carmen in popularity. From first measure to last, Chabriers score is a marvel of melody and invention. The performance feaconducted by Charles Dutoit turing Barbara Hendricks and Gino is splendid, Quilico among others as is the sound. One of todays new superstars, Mar-to- n unleashes her tawnily exciting dramatic soprano in excerpts from TrisTannhaeuser, Lohengrin, tan und Isolde and the Immolation Scene from Goetterdaemmerung. Her singing is occasionally wild, but its always stylistically commanding RAVEL: SHEHERAZADE; SEVEN SONGS. Kiri Te Kanawa (soprano), Belgian National Opera Orchestra, John Pritchard, conductor (Angel). Dame Kiris voice is at its ravishing best here. The songs work most impressively in orchestral transcription while the early Ravel cycle shows this composer reaching unique heights of exoticism. Maazels grandiose, yet raptly tensile conducting provides a uniquely satisfying experience; the orchestral playing is glorious; and soprano Kathleen Battle is thus far unsurpassed in the childlike strophes of the final movement. Highly recommended, even to those who have most other versions. er, conductor (Spectrum). These works, each receiving its premiere recording, are among the sturdiest and most appealing of their kind.
