Representatives of the United Mine Workers of America and Emery Mining Company, which operated the Wilberg and two adjacent coal mines for Utah Power and Light Co., wdl sit in on the hearings and have been invited to ask clarifying questions, but will not be allowed to examine or e witnesses, Mr. OGorman said previously. Scheduled for interviews Monday are mine foreman Harold Brock, preshift examiner Karl Kreek, longwall service foreman Gilbert Madrid, near North Salt Lake mine foreman Lester Jorgensen, lanes of longwall section foreman Thomas when her car slammed into a compact auto, killing Stephanie S. 18, and Beverly Syphus, 49, both Clearfield. Two other people in the small car suffered injuries. Mrs. Prusse was not seriously injured. Loren Martin, Davis County Attorney, said the charges specify that Mrs. Prusse committed an act of negligence in that she should have been aware of a substantial and unjustified risk, and that her failure to perceive that risk constituted a gross deviation from the standard of care that an ordinary person would exercise. team of federal Mine Safety and Health Administration investigators and Bill Cave, chief mine inspector for the state, are scheduled to take sworn testimony from 29 witnesses during five days of hearings on the Dec. 19 disaster that claimed 27 lives, By Mike Gorrell A Tribune Staff Writer ORANGEVILLE, Emery County The formal investigation of the Wilberg Mine fire will begin Monday with six employees testifying in closed hearings before federal and state officials. Fire Still Burning Meanwhile, Emery Mining spokesman Bob Henne said equipment monitoring temperature levels and the presence of gasses and particulates in the Wilberg indicate the fire is still burning and that an undetermined amount of oxygen remains in the mine. The readings over the next two weeks will let us know what might have to be done to put out the fire, whether that entails pumping water, foam or inert gasses into the mine, he said. Mr. Henrie noted that full production has resumed at the adjacent Deer Creek Mine and Emery Mining officials hope to have the a nearby conglomerate of three mines, in full operation by the end of the month. More than 40 workers currently are doing maintenance and other preparatory work to bring sections of the closed since March because of low demand for coal, back into production in incremental stages, he added. e, Yoa-chu- Mrs. Prusse was allegedly lriving the wronk way in the northbound At Home in the Primate House Zoo Gets Two New Mandrills Mandrills are a group of monkeys which normally inhabit the forest floors of Africa. Salt Lake City, however, is a new home for two mandrills obtained by Hogle Zoo from the Rio Grande Zoo in Albuquerque, N.M. LaMar Farnsworth, zoo director, said the two are in the Primate House where it is hoped they will become part of a successful breeding program. In the primates, he says, facial expressions are an important part of social interaction. In the mandrill, a toothsome smile shows that the animal is feeling or the smile acts as a greet- uti-fortabl- e, ing. Should the mouth be opened into a g yawn, accompanied by hands slapping on the ground and an fang-barin- intense stare, the animal has become angry and aggressive. Rarely do mammals exhibit truly bright coloration, according to Mr. Farnsworth. Mandrills are an exception with their bright blue and red markings on the face and body. In the wilds as they search for fruit, roots or small animals to eat, they keep track of other members of their group with grunts and other noises. Firm A company CHICAGO (UPI) once owned by a Utah businessman who is facing manslaughter charges in Illinois, has been fined J1,000 for refusing to hand over business records to the Illinois attorney general. Cook County Circuit Judge Albert Green fined B.R. MacKay and Sons d Inc. after finding the Salt Lake firm in contempt of court in a hearing Wednesday. The company once owned Film Recovery Systems Inc. in Elk Grove Village, 111., which used a cyanide proCity-base- cess to recover silver from photographic film. It has been charged with illegal generation, storage and transportation of hazardous wastes, because of some 16 million pounds of cyanide-tainte- d film chips it dumped in northern Illinois. A lawsuit filed by the Attorney Generals Office seeks 54 million in reimbursement for cleaning up the chips. MacKay, Film Recovery and another company, Metallic Marketing Inc., also could be fined up to 525,000 a day for violation of the Illinois Environmental Protection Act. The three firms also have been previously indicted on criminal charges of involuntary manslaughter for the death of a worker, Stefan Golab, 61, who worked at the Elk Grove Village firm. An autopsy showed Golab died of cyanide poisoning from repeated exposure to the chemical at the plant. Cook County States Attorney Richard Daley called the plant a huge gas chamber, and charged five company officials with murder. Three have pleaded not guiUy and two, including Michael T.ffoicKay, presi- - dent of B.R. MacKay and Sons, are fighting extradition. Gov. Scott Matheson last year turned down Cook Countys request to extradite MacKay, claiming he could not get a fair trial because of excessive publicity. MacKay and Sons refused to comply with Greens November order to turn over business records to the attorney general. The companys attorney says the records are no longer needed because Green dismissed the company from thp suit in 1983. NOW!
