Hut experiences have been turned int an equally powerful film, The Killing Fields " Srhanberg, who is now a columnist for The Times, went to Cambodia in 1372 to cover the growing war between the countrys revolutionary Khmer Rouge, and the Lon Nol government On first landing m Phnom Penh, he met his Cambodian assistant and interpreter, a young man named Dith Pran. Pran was to become an invaluable asset to the reporter, because of his knowledge of the country and his ability to ferret out information. Before long, Pran came to work for Schanberg exclusively, turning down requests by wire service reporters and other journal-st- s. They became close friends, depending on each other professionally and pe- .onally Pran came to share Schanberg's determination in getting to the heart of a story, he came to see journalism as a way of helping his people. Together they covered big stories, like the obliteration of the Mekong River town of Neak Luong when an 2 American dropped 20 tons of bombs because of an error in its computerized homing system. Some 150 civilians died, 250 were wounded. Schanberg and Pran defied efforts of the An encan Embassy to downplay the destruction, and personally visit- - r Opening night will feature the 'The Falron and the premiere of Snowman ' John Srhlesmger's new film starring Sean Penn and Timothy Hutton Falcon" is based on the true story about two young men, best friends who are sent to prison for selling sensitive intelligence information to the KOB The film will be shown at 8 p m Tickets are $10 Other opening night events include a reception with the celebrities at 8 p m at Phillips Gallery, 444 E. 200 South, and a dinner following the premiere at Club Trianon at the Triad Plaza Tickets for the evening package of reception film and dinner are $f0, and can he reserved by calling Following Friday's premiere, the festival will move up to Park City The event runs through Jan. 2 Redfords ,artiripat ion in the fesn up in the air as he is tival has with Meryl preparing to Streep in Out of Africa," which will be directed by Sydney Pollack. Schanberg's story made Page One and became the first of many to win a Pulitzer Prize. In 1375 when the Khmer Rouge took power, Schanberg arranged to have Pran's family airlifted from Phnom Pehn. Schanberg and Pran stayed behind to cover the takeover. When the Khmer Rouge first came Sydney Schanberg, left, Dith Pran met and became friends in Cambodi a. He relied on his incredible survival instincts and his Buddhist discipline. He drank the blood of live oxen, he ate insects and lizards, he pretended to be an ignorant and obedient slave to his Khmer Rouge guards. And when he succeeded in crossing the border into Thailand Pran carried the scars of beatings and ravages of malnutrition. Now he is a photographer working for The Times, living with his wife and four youngsters in New York. As for The Killing Fields, Schan-ber- g is satisfied with the motion picture, and hopes that it will spread the story of Cambodia. Sam Watcrston is seen in the role of the journalist, and the film addresses the question of whether Schanbergs hunger for a good( story overran his good judg- into capital city, it seemed Cambodia would enjoy its first period of peace in five years. Before long, however, the reality of an insane program of executions and wholesale destruction became apparent In those early days of the occupation Pran saved Schanberg's life by convincing the young soldiers that the Times reporter was valuable in telling their story to the outside world. Weeks later, when the Khmer Rouge ordered all Cambodians out of the cities, Schanberg was unable to return the favor, and watched as his best friend was led into the interior of Cambodia, which would bee , me a death camp for millions. In a few days, Schanberg and other foreign reporters and diplomats were allowed to leave the country in a truck convoy headed toward the Thailand border. Prans fate would haunt the journalist for four years. I didnt have nightmares. Mostly I had daymares. I didnt sleep very well during those years, Schanberg said in an interview here this week. My thoughts wculd wander off to what had happened to Pran, and all those desperate fantasies about what I might have done to get him out The point is, I respected his decision to stay, Schanberg explained about Pran remaining after the Khmer Rouge occupation. To say that I should have thrust him on a well helicopter with his family who the hell am I to do that? That carries the implication that Fm God. I felt responsible for him, like he felt responsible for me. When I couldnt save him, after he had saved me, then yes, I felt responsible and guilty. Guilt is the irrational emotion that comes with, frustration. Rationally I knew there was no more to be done without getting shot I knew that and he knew that But reason does not help how bad you feeL The gnawing doubt ended five years ago when Schanberg received word that Pran was alive. I asked that I be shown as a real person. If I wasn't the film wouldn't be honest I took that risk, and Tm glad I did. If I wanted to look perfect I would never have made the film in the first place. "I twitch when I see some of the hard stuff, he admitted. Another condition established by Schanberg concerned the screen image of the Cambodians. I wanted the Cambodians portrayed as real people, not cardboard figures like so many western films have shown Asians and other third world people. I want audiences to remember these people when they walk out of the theaters And I wanted the western people in the film me to be real too. I wanted to be shown as a person who makes mistakes, who has doubts, and who gropes for solutions after the decisions he has made. In his career, Schanberg has proven to be a determined journalist who doesn't abide government or military officials interfering in his work.
