Show 6W The Salt Lake Tribune Sunday December 21 m 1986 -- Tips on avoiding the holiday blues By Thomas R Lee Ph D Extension Specialist Assistant Professor Department of Family and Human Development Utah State University LOGAN — As each Christmas approaches we anticipate family fun and togetherness giving gifts and the observance of family Christmas traditions For most of us Christmas traditions are among the most memorable and important ones we observe as a family These Christmas tradi- - tions can have a xVJ Dr Lee unifying effect on families Despite this do you find your anticipation of Christmas tinged with a sense of impending doom over the “post holiday pits’’” We often end up feeling bleak blah and basically blue after the holidays Even though it is fairly common for people to feel this way we don’t have to Sometimes we put an unrealistic expectation on ourselves that this Christmas has to be the “best Christmas ever ” We get into problems when we tell ourselves that everything must be perfect everyone in the family must attend everything we plan or everyone must enjoy everything we do in order for it to be the ideal Christmas When the reality of these activities doesn't live up to our expectations we are likely to feel let down and disappointed There is a second way in which our attitude of "the best Christmas ever — or else "causes problems As we are emotionally keyed up by tension pressure and the drive to do it all at Christmas we keep our mental and physical systems under a "stress response" for a prolonged period Such prolonged periods of stress lead to a "stress reaction" of feeling emotionally drained and even depressed We also are more vulnerable to physical illness after prolonged stress Overtiredness also can be related to our frenzied quest for Christmas cheer When we are making our 101 holiday preparations going to social gatherings staying up late and just generally doing all that we can to make this the “best Christmas ever" we are likely to become overly tired is physically Our mental well-b'indirectly affected by our physical g well-bein- Physical fatigue can g make us feel mentally sluggish blues Finally the can be the result of a sense of loss Feelings of sadness may come because when the holiday is over we may feel a sense of loss over having nothing to look forward to anymore blues are likely The to be a combination of all the factors above By being aware of these traps we can help avoid the blues after-Christm- after-holida- y Change your outlook If you have looked to Christmas as the solution to Youngest bi(‘)der Sean O’Keefe 11 the youngest person on record to bicycle across the United States pedaled 3 250 miles from Santa Monica Calif to New York City in 26 days says National Geographic your other dissatisfactions with life and as the time when "1 11 finally be happy" you're almost inevitably going to find that the day or the season can’t live up to your expectations Make expectations more reasonable Instead of saying "Things just have to go well” try “It will be nice if ” and instead of “I just can’t ” remind stand it if yourself "It will still be OK ” Pace yourself Ask yourself which of the holiday activities really brings enjoyment’’ Are there others you impose on yourself that you don’t enjoy’’ Don't let the things that matter most be at the mercy of the things that matter least What is it you remember fondly about past Christmases’’ What is going to mean the most to your family or other loved ones’’ It may be time spent together rather than a frantic rush to plan or do one y '- f "x -t i! s News of weddings fE-- t- j’ljr- -
