| Show T "'' W T y"r "t i m rrvr W-- The Salt Lake Tribune December Sunday 21 1986 A5 e£- y NASA Plans to Publish Findings Of Satellite’s Long Solar Scan - PASADENA C’alif (AP) NASA soon will publish results of a satellites survey of the solar system but it will take scientists year’s to determine how many of the objects it sighted were previously unknown as- teroids or comets The final edition of the Infrared Astronomical Satellite Asteroid and Comet Survey catalog to be published on computer tape in January will list 35618 unidentified objects sighted by the satellite which photographed 96 percent of the sky by the orbiting telescopes known as IRAs But many of those sightings are unreliable represent multiple observations of the same objects or were of previously known asteroids and comets “Knowing that number is probably the last thing we'll get out of the project" probably 30 years from now said Dennis L Matson planetology and geology manager at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Jet Propulsion Laboratory "It's a great big jigsaw' puzzle" said astronomer Brian Marsden director of the Smithsonian Institutions Minor Planet Center in Cambridge Mass Marsden guessed IRAS' observations ultimately will result in the discovery of about 100 asteroids and six to 12 comets in addition to the satellite’s earlier discoveries of four asteroids and six comets announced in 1983 IRAS detected objects that emit in- frared light or heat and often can't be seen by optical telescopes which detect only visible light The satellite was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base on Jan 25 1983 on a joint U S Bntish-Dutch mission It ran out of coolant needed to keep its own heat from interfering with images and stopped working in November 1983 IRAS made a series of stunning findings especially the discovery that about a dozen nearby stars are surrounded by dusty disks which might represent the early stages of planet formation in young solar systems Asteroids and comets are thought to be leftovers from the giant swirling disk of dust and gas that gradually clumped together under the influence of gravity to form the solar system Scientists study them to gain "information that pertains to the origin and evolution of the solar system” Marsden said by telephone from Cambridge The rocky asteroids 20 to 600 miles across are located mostly between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter Determining the number of IRAS' new discoveries is difficult because the satellite made 47501 sightings of small objects Matson said 11499 turned out to be multiple sightings of 1807 previously known asteroids and the four new ones announced in 1983 Another 384 images represent 19 already known comets and the six new ones that also were announced previously That left 35618 unidentified and Tiiesday Shop Monday Wednesday 8-1- 0 8-- 6 J ter r -
