completed their winmngest season with their ninth straight triumph "It feels good to go home for the holidays and come back” inside linebacker Harry Car-so- n added “Everybody goes home for the holidays but we get to come back” The Giants and champions of the NFC East guaranteed they will be home for the 55-2- 4 It may have seemed picky-pickwhen some of the athletic directors and college executive officers raised the question through the NCAA of "outside money" paid their basketball coaches After all educators have published books and papers lectured served as consultants and some have retained their medical and dental practices while serving as teachers The NCAA raised the question based on the divided interest of a coach earning more "on the outside” than from his salary paid we came back to put a whipping on them and that was important" Rouson said The Packers thought the Giants had too much fun They were upset at Jeff Rutledge's run on a fake field goal to set up Rouson’s second TD and objected to Raul field goal with 2:07 left “To say you have to give the second team experience is bull” Green Bay guard Ron Hallstrom said "They had 16 games and four preseason In 91-8- 9 By Steve Luhm Tribune Sports Writer CHICAGO — Mark Eaton had a miraculous recovery Bobby Hansen covered miraculously And Karl Malone scored five of his 17 points in the final 1:03 here Saturday night to victory over the Chicago give the Jazz a Bulls Utah which has now won nine of its last 10 deficit in the games rallied from a final 7l2 minutes to get this one It was obviously miraculous First there was the play of Eaton He had a 16 points 13 rebounds and nine season-higblocked shots In the final 37 seconds he was part of the game's two key defensive plays Not a bad effort for a guy who was listed as doubtful before the game because of a strained hamstring Then there was Hansen He held Michael Jordan to just 27 points — only the third time that's happened this year — and he kept the ball out of Air Jordan's hands when it counted most In all Jordan hit just 10 of 26 shots and he managed only five points in the fourth quarter That compares to the 17 fourth-quarte- r points he got earlier this year when the Jazz beat the Bulls in Salt Lake City Finally there was the Jazz's comeback They trailed midway through the fourth quarter before outseoring the Bulls 20 5 the rest of the way In the end the Jazz got their fifth win in the last six road games and their third victory in four tries on this current Eastern road trip "Sports is a stage" Jazz Coach Frank y Call 2r struck back One of the more vociferous was Billy Tubbs coach of the Oklahoma Sooners basketball team who pointed the finger at the college presidents "If they want to do that (control or monitor outside income) with the coaches that’s fine Let's do it with the university presidents too "Let’s take their perks away from them Let’s not let them live in those free houses Let’s not let them drive those free cars Let’s not let them be on the board (of directors) of corporations Hey the presidents have more perks than anybody “And if you want to be fair let’s do it to the professors in the law school Let's not let them have any outside income" Coach Tubbs suggested Utah readers will recall when Dr David Pierpont Gardner resigned as president of the University of Utah to become head of the California university system he had a deal at Berkeley that made even Jackie Sherrill s football contract at Texas A & M look miserly I tend to agree with the coaches on the matter of “outside income” I question whether it may be kosher for a manufacturer of athletic shoes to pay a coach more for using his shoes than the university does for coaching the team that's all Again though the law professor may command a consultant fee far in excess of his salary from the university The same goes for an expert in the engineering medicine architecture and other professional schools Dr Eddie Anderson when he coached football at the University of Iowa raised the ire of the dental profession because the coach continued his dental practice and those were the days when "the professions" were very jealous of any of their membership getting free advertising So back to the perks which the basketball coaches seem to have rounded up As I noted in a Friday Mirror Jerry of Nevada-LaVegas reputedly was the paid highest total of the college coaches His "take" includes a salary of $155000 plus 10 percent of the profits from an NCAA appearance an estimated $150000 a year from Nike shoes a car and basketball tickets worth $38000 There was a time when a coach’s radio and TV show was considered part of his contract but the payola from the athletic show manufacturers is of recent vintage I have a list of 27 of the coaches reportedly with the highest "salary" and my figu' es indicate a "salary" in the millions for coaches endorsing and placing Converse Nike Adidas McGregor Puma or Heebok footwear on their athletes Can the fact the defending champion Louisville club wears Converse shoes and equipment be worth $100000 in free advertising’’ It must be because almost all the Division I basketball coaches have something going with the shoe manufacturers Why Sports? It is a bit strange that the emphasis on outside money" for college coaches surfaces when there appears to be no interest is analysing the "other income" earned by other members of the university family But then again the athletic picture always has been suspect I just completed a survey submitted by Dr Don Ranly of the journalism department of the University of Missouri and one question intrigued me "Do you believe the sports department should accept perks like free food and drinks and tickets from a university largesse which is not shared by the cither press people on the city desk”" The "shared by other people of the press" is what rankles me Over a lot of years I have known media people who rarely pay for any of their enter tainment It is true the sportswriters when 'hey ran get away from their regular beats ' may have the opportunity to get a freebie to i foothal! or basketball game But only those actually working that game are admitted to the press box and the (roe food and drink I would hate to feel a free hotdog and a bottle of suds at Dorks or a sandwich potato chips and a soft drink or coffee at a university would influence mv coverage of a game When I attend a concert or theatrical production I pay as I should But some of the s same department people who are freeloading at the sports event also have tree 'ea's at the concerts plays and theatrical productions Vet at times when editorial big domes calher in national think tanks the problem of 'he free food drink and tickets in the spoits department frequently occupies much of heir conversation Unfortunately the sport' department freeloaders" haven't been able to include the manufacturer of athletic shoes on their lists Observation Ward Anyone willing to pla favorites can get a sntrl liilormation I o Giants -
