those days" Mrs Cederlof remembered as the members sat around the table “If you wanted to make a call you picked up your telephone and’ the operator said ‘Number please “We got to know where our friends’ lines were on the switchboard It was really awful when you saw your boyfriend’s light come on and get hooked into another girl’s telephone line” Mrs Cederlof laughed cut 'NiSV I - Counting calories during holidays WEST LAFAYETTE Ind (UPI) -The holiday season is universally seen as the season to eat and drink as well as be merry The key to remaining on your diet during this season of temptations is to go for elegance rather than quantity according to Olivia Wood a professor at the Purdue University School of Consumer and Family Sciences’ Department of Foods and Nutrition “Too often at holiday time we think of how many different kinds of foods we can put on the table rather than the quality” Wood said She suggested limiting the number of entrees and desserts and added that desserts do not have to be high in calories to be appetizing Instead of spending a lot of money on several dishes concentrate on one special expensive treat The table can be dressed up with fresh flowers and candles Wood warned that snacks and hors d’oeuvre tables can be especially hazsnack ardous to diets A before dinner will curb your appetite and prevent a binge at mealtimes low-calor- C switchboards I don't know how you could do it if you were very far along in pregnancy” Mrs feld Schoen- partment and assistant to the writ- diaper company called the writ- ing lab director A ing lab ondering w hether to use w ho or whom in an advertising campaign and a newspaper called mulling over a headline questioning the plural of hole in one Child said “At that point we decided we needed a grammar hotline” said Child who is in his second year at the lab “It's very interesting We have calls that come in from all over the world — questions that seem to come out of the blue” Child said “Lately we’ve had a lot of calls dealing with language when you’re addressing a large group of people — do you say he she or they It really depends on the situation and the audience That’s the problem with answering calls It depends on the situation in most cases” Child said Sexist language is “probably the only new thing The rest of them are very traditional problems that people will have until the end of time like he said Sometimes lawyers telephone who are worried about the implications of an apostrophe said Muriel Harris director and founder of Purdue's writing lab Last year the Purdue grammar phone handled 243 telephone calls she said “We get a lot of business writing calls and how to deal with a salutation when you don't know who you re writing to" Child said The Put due hotline is included in a directory of 31 grammar hotlines in 20 states and two Canadian provinces It is the only 1986 Indiana listing in the directory compiled at Tide-ater Community College in Virginia Beach Va "The list doesn't pretend to be comprehensive but I think most of us on the list hear about each other” said Donna Friedman an assistant professor of English who directs Tidewar hotline ters writing and compiles the directory each January Other college English departments or academic or public libraries may answer questions informally without giving the service a formal name she said Next year Ball State University in Muncie will be added to the directory along with about fie other schools or individuals in other states willing to help answer questions about grammar she said More than where to place a comma7 Help is available from the Purdue University grammar hotline The grammar phone is a service offered by the West Lafayette school's writing lab The line was born “after a couple of strange calls” said Bob Child a teaching assistant in the English de- - vC but there are usually enough people in the room that we can get a majority opinion or someone will know” he said “Usage truly is a question of what the majority of people use anyway” Mrs Harris said Mrs Harris says the service helps students learn because in the classroom when they're being taught grammar they aren’t as interested “When they call and are trying to get a parallel structure going that 30 seconds of teaching time is so constructive” she said "Talking about writing while it's happening is infinitely more effective The person sees the need to learn it ” (The Purdue University grammar hotline can be reached at mailed last year upon request and reenceipt of a stamped velope Ms Friedman said Mrs Harris says the hotline is “really a very minor service” that’s part of the lab “We’re all here working on writing It's like a thing that we do in addition to about 12 other things” said Mrs Harris who also started a newsletter for writing labs and who edited a source book on tutoring writing for writing labs Are the experts ever stumped7 “I had one last year that I’m still trying to find the answer to A high school teacher in Iowa had a student asking why the personal pronoun T is capitalized” Child said “It’s not unusual at all that we get something that stumps us individual ly switched” she said “It went smoothly but it was exciting ” They sometimes worked split shifts “You would work in the morning Then you would be off for a few hours and work 3 30 to 7 30 p m ” Mrs Cederlof said Share Early Fun "We had a nice place to rest There were showers and irons and ironing boards We could pin up our hair between shifts and then be ready to go out on a date when we got off" she added “Speaking of hair do you remember what happened the night I got engaged7” Mrs Cowan recalled suddenly They laughed “I used to slick back my hair and pin a false bun around my head Then I wore a cute little flat hat over it” Mrs Cowan explained “We were at a dance when I got my engagement ring I can remember feeling so elegant with my hair done up and showing off my ring Everyone was coming up and hugging me I sort of reached up to pat my head and make sure there were no stray hairs sticking out All I felt was my slicked-bac- k hair I looked on the floor and ‘ still have the little bun I found it yesterday when I was looking for some of the things we sewed 50 ” ' years ago Treasure She brought a guest towel to the luncheon table "Mildred I remember when you gave this to me all those years ago" she said to Mrs Schoenfeld Mary Huckvale brought embroidered pillowcases with her “The embroidery is still good but I can t believe I kept these old worn-ou- t ” pillowcases Though Mabel Luff and Ruth Mallory were not telephone operators their membership in the sewing circle goes back almost as long was a telephone “My sister-in-laoperator and brought me in as a member of the sewing group” Mrs Luff said She in turn brought Mrs Mallory Their children grew up together “When they were babies we met in the afternoons and brought them When they got older we would meet at night and let our husbands babysit” Mrs Cederlof said While most daughters of the group can sew their mothers usually take care of those chores But I “My granddaughter brings things to me even though my daughter sews well” Mrs Cederlof said They sewed together through World War II and the Korean War Their conversation changed during 50 years but the concern for family and friends remains constant “I’m just finishing this crocheted dress for my granddaughter” Mrs Mallory said while Mrs Schoenfeld showed off a knit sweater for a grandson Instead of embroidering dish towels for gifts Mrs Schoenfeld knits dishcloths for members “You have to use cotton yarn so you can bleach them” she said They make afghans and holiday decorations and have been known to use a magnifying glass hung around the neck for
