The Hoodoo They just had so much personality and their singing was so great and their songwriting waft so great," Hoffs said during a recent telephone interview "You could listen to their records today and they are still the best records around. I think anyone would say that." , The Bangles are in the midst of a nationwide tour that has them playing material from "Different Light," their brand new album, as well as selections from their 1984 debut record, "All Over The Place." 4 4 '. "We still love that sort of melodic, jangly sound of '60s records I don t think it will ever leave us. I think there is something about a good melody that is so striking and so pleasing to the ear." she added. To Hoffs' ear the band sounds great onstage. "I think weve gotten a lot lian band will open the show While many of the guitarist s peers were busy going to stadium reg k shows or piercing their ears and getting invoived in the punk movement. Holfs was listening to singer songwnters such as Joni Mitchell and Bonnie Raitt, James Taylor and Carole King. She was also rediscover:ng the magic of old Beatles records It was Just a personal thing," fil,ffs explained "It was funny beca ise when I met the Peterson sisters they knew so much about the Beatles. It was odd because most of the kids of try age group really didn t know as much about the Beatles as I did. It s rare." During this period many youths were che( king Out the used records bins and rediscovering '60s bands such as Love. the Seeds and the Electric Prunes. There are traces of everyone from the Mamas and the Papas to the Eyrds and Buffalo Springfield in the Bangles' sound. The music the Bangles play could best be described as having a '60s feel and an '80s attitude. Hoffs is proud of the band's 'flOs roots. "We still listen to that music and still love it, and in some ways like it more than the music you hear now," she said. "I don't know why. I s a lot of interaction among all four Hoff s began playing guitar in elementary school. taking lessons from her uncle. She took up the electric in- there strument in college The nucleus of the band was formed in January 1981 when Hoffs was brought together with the Peterson sisters through ads placed in a Los Angeles newspaper They called themselves the Bangs and released the record Getting Out Of Hand." Upon readying for a national tour it was discovered that a bar band in New York called itself the Bangs and they would have to change the name. They came up with the Bangles and asked bassist Michael Steele to join. Their first album, "All Over The Place." produced by David Kahne, received widespread acclaim for its tight musicianship. Some critics even went so far as to call them the second coming of the Beatles. The 1984 album was tough, almost defensive in its stance. Hoffs said it was "just how we were feeling at the time." The new album, "Different Light," displays a growing musical maturity. It sounds brighter, more upbeat. "We grew up," Hoffs said matter-of-factl-- -better, she said, because we stretched a lot to make the album. I think the songs were better songs this time around. "Well. I don't ever want to say that. We still play most of the last album too, We really learned a lot in making both the records. "A lot of people when they see us live they say its a little rockier and a little rawer But I like that personally," Hoffs explained. She said there are no oversized egos in the group. What they strive for and achieve before an audience, according to Hoffs. is a certain interaction that is infectious. "We're unique in that we have four singers, four writers, four real individual personalities that come through," she said. "I think on stage Those who grew up with the Bea--t- ies and miss that sound might just find it in the Bangles.
