THE COLOR PURPLE," Steven Spiel-bergfilm adoptation of Alice Wolker's novel is a beautiful film about a young, block woman who rises above the sublugation by others to find her pioce in the sun. Spielberg softens some of books explicitness, but the emotional power is there. With a cast lead by Yvhoopi Goldberg and Danny Glover, this is one of the best acted films of last year. It is also uplifting and inspiring. Rated P0-1Carriage Square Trolley. "DOWN AND OUT IN BEVERLY HILLS," Based on Jean Renoir's comedy "Boudu Saved from Drowning," Paul Mazursky's new film stars Bette Midler and Richard Dreyfuss as a nouveau-rich- e Beverly Hills couple who find a bum (Nick Nolte) who has tried to drown himself in their swimming pool in one last desperate act. At times a hilarious lampoon cd. chichi life. At other times, a film where the comedy seems unfocused ond strained. Rated R. Valley Fair, Redwood Drive In. "SLEEPING BEAUTY," This classic animated fantasy film was first released by Walt Disney in 1959. Set to the music of Tchaikovsky, the film is on adaptation of y Charles Perrault's of a famous fairy tale. The film was made during the heyday of animation at the Disney Studio. Rated G. "GUNG-HO,- " Ron ("Cocoon") Howard's new comedy stars Michael Keaton as an auto assembly plant foreman who persuades a Japanese auto firm to come In and save the defunct factory. The result is a clash of cultures, tradition and egos. An entertaining little movie, but not up to the quail In. "THE JEWEL OF THE NILE," Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny Devito return in this sequel to "Romancing the Stone." While it has lots of oction ond some good comedic performances, "Jewel of the Nile" can't esCope feeling like a retread. Despite a charming Douglas and Turner, this cloesn't match the original. Rated PG. Sandy. "JO JO DANCER, YOUR LIFE IS CALL. ING," Richard Pryor wrote, directed ond stars in this autobiographical film inspired incident in 1980 involving by the nearly-fata- l drugs. This is a film with many emotions as Pryor looks bock on his troubled childhood with a nostalgic glow, and then on his later, days in show business with a wide-eyeanger. There is a sense of purging about this film, like it is a story Pryor needs to tell. He tells it quite well. Rated R. Mann Century, Midvolley Cinemas, Flick. "THE JOURNEY OF NATTY GANN," Jeremy Kagan ("The Chosen") directs a fine movie in the best of the Disney tradition. "9 V3 WEEKS," Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke play two lonely people who find each other one afternoon in a grocery store. What happens, however, isn't exactly your Idea of a romance. Instead, Rourke's character wants to sexually dominate Basinger, and Incredibly, she lets him. by Adrian Lyne ("Flashdance") this is supposed to be a sexy, erotic movie. It fails on all counts. Rated R. Utah. "OFF BEAT," Another con comedy, but this one has some surprising ioys in the form of Judge Reinhold and Meg Tilly. Reinhold plays a librarian who masgerodes as a police officer in order to attract Tilly. Predictably, he gets Into trouble. Reinhold and Tilly, however, help smooth over the cliches. Rated PG. "ON THE EDGE," Bruce Dern, a long distance runner in real life, plays a runner who was declared ineligible for Olympic competition in the '605 because a rival challenged his amateur status. Now, 20 years later, he's Out to settle the score by training for a race through the mountains near Northern California's Mill Valley to prove he still has the fire burning.
