For Marie. at least as far as she had anything to say about it at 14, the choice was clear. Tribune Staff Writer Marie Osmond's first 13 years ended with a hit song on the country charts In 1974. "Paper Roses" became a No 1 song on both the country and pop charts. Not a week would go by that the supermarket tabloids wouldn't speculate (or print outright lies) about her personal life. Though some of that type of treatment is to be expected by show business types. Marie seemed to be an easy target, partly because she became a celebrity at such a young age, but also due to her outspoken views about marriage, family, morality and religion. The gossip columnists didn't leave her alone. But. for the most part, she was able to ignore the negative or false stories, viewing them as part of the business.
