As a world-clas- s procrastinator, I can understand how a minor inconvenience like a traffic ticket could slip to the back of someone's glove box and not surface for months. Unfortunately, an unpaid ticket is like the potato that slipped out of the bag and rolled to the back of the cupboard. In six months the common, uninteresting potato turns into a nightmarish mutant with tentacles growing around everything in reach. A traffic ticket that has been fermenting in the court system for three or four months will look like that potato. Nobody says you have to pay the ticket if you are innocent, but you do have to contact the court or justice of the peace. The information on the ticket should be enough to get you started in the right direction, if you feel you have been unfairly accused. If you lost the ticket, or are hopelessly confused by any form of govern ment, call the police department that issued the ticket. They can give you the names and phone numbers of the courts in their jurisdictions. Failure to contact the court, either by paying the fine or asking for a hearing, will result in a warrant for your arrest. Bluntly put, this means you can be taken to jail. Most courts notify a driver of an outstanding ticket by mail, but this is a courtesy, not a requirement. Your signature on the ticket is a promise to appear, and appear you must. Certainly not everyone who has a warrant is caught and taken to jail, but the possibility exists. Aside from this unfortunate warrant business, the court will notify the Office oT .Drivers License Services that you have a ticket that has not been resolved. The office, in turn, will send you a notice of suspension. This notice indicates your drivers license Without advertising, a terrible thing happens... After 20 days, Drivers License Services will suspend your license. This may not seem too terrible, unless you get pulled over again and the police officer checks the status of your license. At that time you will get another ticket to struggle with. And if your insurance company finds out your license is suspended, it could cancel your automobile coverage. Drivers License Services also charges a $25 fee to clear the suspension on a drivers license. Rectifying all these problems not only takes money, it takes time. You could probably do it by mail if you started young in life, but it wouldnt be easy. Traffic tickets are more easily handled when they are still tickets, before they turn into warrants and suspensions. A friend of mine, whose innocuous speeding ticket turned into a paper monster with a death-grion his driving privileges, considered assuming a new identity and moving to another state. He likes it here, though, so he stuck it out. Armed with a checkbook and pen, he finally slew the ticket and its evil spawn, the warrant and the suspension.
