"The girls team is pretty good, but we have some tough competitors, where his "Its by far the strongest boys' team," Lauber said. "The depth of the boys is staggering The girls are as talented as they've been, but do not have as much depth. There are only 15 girls but the ones we have are very talented." He did not disappoint the crowd that had Roger Lorenze Last Thursday at Hillcrest the annual "Battle of the Axe" resumed with the Brighton Bengals retrieving the trophy they lost last year for the first time in the wrestling rivalry. The final score in the duel was a lopsided 43-- in front of 3,000 boisterous fans, but the match was closer than that. It was obvious the Bengals were superior, but a young Hillcrest squad s of almost put up a fight in every match. Hillcrcst's Coach Jim Swaydan said although the team has been plagued with injuries, a shortage of wrestlers and red tape, he felt good about the performance, under the circumstances. "I am happy with our performance considering the season has been shortened by one week. Our young wrestlers have come a long way. I am especially excited about next year. I learned a lot about strategies this coach said. year," the first-yea- r Not only have the Huskies had problems all season, but two of their wrestlers who were expected to compete could not. The Huskies wrestler, Mike Ilayter. could not compete because of a decision made by the vice principal five minutes before the match. Because Havter would be moving out of the school district, it was determined he should not participate in the Battle. Hillcrest's lone victory came in the division between Brian Blackburn and Danny Martinez Blackburn, who Swaydan says is mentally tough and a gifted athlete, was not expected to compete because of a job commitment that kept him out for the past two weeks. But he did. 40-0- By chanted, "Blackburn, Blackburn." through portions of the match, by posting an exciting victory. "It felt good to win the match because the student body has been on my side all year, Blackburn said. Although Hillcrest responded to the challenge, it was Brighton's night. Last year Brighton's head coach. David Chavis, planned on retiring at the end of the season. Those plans were halted when Hillcrest upset the highly talented Bengals. "I was the first coach ever to lose the Axe. I couldn't retire without it. so we came back to get it," Chavis said. state Brighton, ranked No. 1 in wrestling, displayed strength in all weight divisions. Chavis believes it is a team not stocked with superstars. A perfect example is Ryan Norton. Norton, last year's state champion at 98 pounds and only a junior, is dedicated and often wrestles above his ability, Chavis said. The Bengals used their attack to win 11 of 12 matches. Winning their matches were Mike 6 3 two-third- well-rounde- d hard-nose- d Hill-crest- 's Spencer, Arnold Tolino, Dave Cloward. Ryan Norton, Dave English. Greg Godrey, Robb Ericson, Jed Dave Carlson, Dave Tilby and Justin Jones. The student body was a helpful 13th man. "We have gotten more support from the students this year than any other year," Tilby said. The Brighton student body and d d saving the Huskies from being team seemed more emotionally involved in the match. The somewhat rowdy group rolled in with pins, jackets and any other Brighton-booste- r paraphernalia. They came to get the Axe for their coach. However, with the Axe recaputured, Chavis will most likely retire after this year, postitle as a going-awa- y sibly with a state present. The Hillcrfst wrestlers seemed to be holding their own for the first two periods, only to be taken in the third. Part of the Bengals' strength can be attributed to their workouts, the grueling twice-a-dafirst beginning at 5 a.m. They came out tough, but seemed to die toward the end. I think our conditioning had a lot to do with that," said Godfrey, the No.l ranked wrestler in the state at 134 lbs. "Although I have never been in any other wrestling program, I would still say we work harder than any other team in the state. As a result, we have a great chance at winning the state title, Godfrey said. This year the Axe belongs to the Brighton Bengals. The chance for another turnover of the Axe may be improved next year, as the young Husky team matures under the direction of its optimistic coach. But for now the Axe is orange (again) and in the Brighton trophy case (again), at least until next year. y Tribune Stuff Photo bv Rick Egon Brighton senior Greg Godfrey, dark uni- won his match in the Battle of the Axe.
