But in the domestic industry's Jan. selling period, U.S. carmakers sold 261.704 cars, down 2.5 percent from 268.500 a year ago. Importers report sales only once a month, so no Jan. 1 breakdown was available. For the month though, importers again took some of the gloss off Detroits showing by capturing 27.1 percent of the total car market, generally without using sales incentives. e General Motors Corp., offering financing on most of its cars equipped with engines, had a sales increase for the month of 3.7 percent compared with a year cut-rat- cent of the imports were made in Ja-pa- n. Analysts said investors were once again trying to sort out both the positive and negative effects of falling oil prices. Oil prices have tumbled to lows this week on signs that major producers are inclined to step up production to maintain revenues rather than try to defend their pricing structure. Analysts say lower energy prices are expected to stimulate the U.S. economy, acting in much the same way as a tax cut. Ford Motor Co., still slow to crank out its new midsize Ford Taurus-Mercur- y Sable line and suffering shortages of subcompact cars, reported a 1 percent drop from a year ago. Chrysler Corp. suffered an 8.3 percent decline for the month. Harvey Heinbach, automotive industry analyst at Merrill Lynch in New York, said GM appeared to be taking advantage of Fords shortages and was picking up share from Chrysler, reversing a trend of th? past year and a half in which Ford and Chrysler made gains at GM's expense. GM is offering loan deals on 40 percent of its car lines and Ford on its subcompacts. Chrysler and American Motors Corp. are offering special loan rates and rebates on a variety of lines. All plans expire Feb. 22. Analyst Scott Merlis of Morgan ' Stanley & Co. called the sales pretty decent. Considering the lack of incentives on all car lines, the showing may indicate that demand for new cars is somewhat stronger than analysts had believed, he said The 27.1 percent import share was divided 21.1 percent among the eight Japanese carmakers and 6 percent for the Europeans. Among the small U.S. producers, American Honda Motor Co. Inc. sales cars were down of its 0.8 percent for the month, although Honda finished the month strongly. American Motors Corp. sales were down 36 percent and Volkswagen of America Inc. sales were up 7 4 percent.
