Show Producer to discuss how to woo Hollywood By Terry Orme Tribune Staff Writer Every state is trying to woo Hollywood," says Abner E. Singer, and he should know. For the past 40 years, Singer has worked in the movie-makin- g business as an assistant director and production manager. He has worked on over n feature films, including "Death of a Salesman, "The Wild Hellcats of the Navy" (with One, Ronald and Nancy Reagan), Clint Eastwoods "Thunderbolt and Light-foo- t, a number of Gene Autry westerns and comedies starring the Three Stooges. Singer is currently the coordinating producer of televisions St. Elsewhere and serves as a production consultant for MTM Enterprises, two-doze- which produces the weekly show. On Friday, he will address the Governors Annual Conference on Economic Development on "Filming in Utah: What a Production Company Looks for in Location and Services." "I will be talking about what companies look for in coming to a particular state to film," Singer said Tuesday from his Studio City office. What a state can do to bring companies to their area, what companies need and want in terms of production assistance." Like many states, Utah has a film development office part of the states Office of Economic Development which tries to lure film, television and commercial productions to the state. A big feature film can drop sever- - Acclaimed film almost doesnt make circuit By Bob Thomas Associated Press Writer - LOS ANGELES When a stqdio is award-winninlaunching a is usually the star movie, brought to town and set up in a posh hotel for a round of interviews. g star Not so for Jonathan Pryce, of "Brazil. Universal wouldnt pay for me to come here, said the Welsh actor. "I came here on my own, and Im staying with friends. I still get the feeling that Universal would like the picture to die. Brazil, Terry Gilliams Orwellian vision of bureaucracy gone mad, refuses to die. It was relegated to the shelf by Universal Pictures chairman Sid Sheinberg, who believed the frenetic nature of Brazil would not attract a big enough audience to warrant the millions needed to market it. The movie became a cause celebre when Gilliam took ads pleading with Sheinberg to allow it to be seen. Gilliam finally managed to show it to the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, who promptly named it best picture of 1985. The award, as well as the publicity over the squabble, convinced Sheinberg that th film had attracted enough interest to hazard a release. It opened last month for a week in Los Angeles to allow it to qualify for the Academy Awards. It also opened in New York, where it received critical raves. Alan Sutton, a spokesman for Universal, said the company is behind "Brazil and is platforming the movies release. Besides New York and Los Angeles, it will be in 100 theaters later this month and more later. Still, Pryce felt Universal was halfhearted in its release of "Brazil, as evidenced by its failure to send him on a publicity tour. However, Gilliam now says he is satisfied with the marketing and motion and he will be going on nationwide tour. Few films in recent history have had such a bizarre history as Brazil, which has nothing to do with the South American country except for playing the song, "Brazil. The movie is a black comedy set in the near future about a lower-levcivil servant whose life becomes a nightmare because of a bureaucratic blunder. It was directed by Gilliam, the only American of the Monty Python zanies. He wrote it with Tony award- - winning writer Tom Stoppard and Charles McKeown. The director of Time Bandits, Gilliam found financing for "Brazil from Universal ($9 million for United ) and 20th Century Fox ($6 million for Europe). He assembled a stellar cast of camto players: Robert DeNiro, Ian Holm, Bob Hoskins, Michael Palin (of Monty Python) and Ian Richardson. The role of Sam Lowry, the Everyman who endures the horrors of a computer society, was more of a problem. "Terry wrote the script for me, starting in the late 70s, recalled Pryce, a lean man with a long face and innocent eyes. As the years passed, it became Gray situation: I aged but the part didnt. When Terry arranged the American connection, the studio wanted a member of the Brat Pack to play Sam. So I figured I was out of it. But in his heart Terry knows what he wants, and during the time he was looking for another Sam, he kept coming back to me. Three years ago, Gilliam sent Pryce the Brazil script. I was overwhelmed, said Pryce. The script reads just as strongly as it plays on the screen. I saw no reason why I could not play Sam. True, I was in my early 30s (he is now 38), but time had not been too cruel to me. I could comb my hair forward (to cover a bald spot). I saw Sam as the kind of character Jimmy Stewart did in the 1930s and 1940s, an innocent who looked older than the young man playing him. Pryce,. who had starred in The Ploughmans Lunch, and Something Wicked This Way Comes, did something he had never done before: He asked to be tested. Gilliam was reconvinced, and for five months Pryce worked every day. He even did some strenuous fantasy scenes that involved flying like a bird to the strains of Brazil. There were some rough days, but I never felt tired, said Pryce. I always looked forward to going to the studio. Working with those guest stars was enough to keep my energy States-Canada- al million dollars in an area," said Singer. "Its a very clean business. Cities don't have to lay down any sewer lines, they dont have to hire any more policemen. We come in, do our shooting, and we're gone. And we hire a lot of the local people either on the production side, or as extras from the local theater companies." Singer says the trend in the movie and television industries is toward location shooting. If you need a desert locale, why not go to Kanab? Youre not going to find anything like that around Los Angeles." Another attraction to shooting on location is the willingness of state governments to help out a production company, said Singer. "A lot of times we can call a film commission and get right through to the top, to the governor's office or to the lieutenant governor. The best example of that is in New York and Mayor (Ed) Koch. He goes out of his way to get films to come to New York. He's incredible." For his four decades of work, Sing- er last year was awarded the prestigious Frank Capra Achievement Award from the Directors Guild of America. It signifies an individuals contributions to the motion picture industry. In addition to his extensive work in feature films and his current television assignment, Singer has worked as a production manager or as an assistant director on a number of weekly television programs including The Mary Tyler Moore Show," "The Bob Newhart Show," Playhouse 90, Hill Street Blues," "Lou Grant," WKRP in Cincinnati," "Gunsmoke, The Doris Day Show," It Takes a The Jack Benny Show" and Thief, Remington Steele." He has also served as a production executive on 10 television movies of the week.
