Still, it is show biz, and one of those was Garchairs on the court-martiner's start as an actor. It seems a reasonable guess that he was an imposing presence even without words. He got them soon enough. The play was in 1954, and by 1957 he was doing Maverick, the super-stylis- h television series a sort of saddle sitcom it was that not only established his career but identified the public persona that has made his company a pleasure ever since. James Garner may be to the American character what David Niven was to the English character: a lover in preference to a fighter (but capable of heroics), worldly and charming, with elements of the vagabond and the debonair rascal, a sort of innocent rogue with an easy way with urbane dialogue. If it works, light comedy looks so effortless that the actor seems in fact not to be working at all. Garner has suffered, as Niven suffered, from making excellence look so easy. It took the dramatic roles (Niven in Separate Tables, for example. Garner in The Americanization of Emily and more recently in Heart-sound- s on television) to confirm what good and versatile actors were ia) On the Loose 5.30 (Austral- ia) 8 Wrong Side of the Road (Australia); "Going Down (Australia) 8:15 Parting Glances" (Dramatic Competition) 8:30 "Listen to the City (Jury Member Screening) Whats Happening Today The Wasatch Front, lecture series sponsored by Utah Museum of Natu- ral History, Earthquakes: Prospects and Perspectives, by Walter Joseph Arabasz, Highland High School Auditorium, 2166 S. 1700 East, 7:30 p.m. The Importance of Being Earnest, Pioneer Memorial Theatre, 300 South and University Street, 8 p.m. Steve Braithwaite Quartet, jazz, E. 200 South, 8:30 19 Crow, dancedrama Ted Hughes poetry, Ladies Literary Club, 850 E. Garner is presently visible in Murphys Romance," a film of such unabashed gentleness that, for all its sophistication and roundness of character. it seems to have escaped from another time. It contains zero violence and its nearest approach to a sweaty coupling is called off on account of a fit of sneezing "People come up to me and say, Thank God. there's a picture we can take our children to, Garner said in a recent interview here. We've got three bad words, I believe, one f and two ps, and for that they were going to give us an R. But they got it down to a PG-1or whatever it is." So peaceable a film as Murphy's Romance is a nice change from "The Rockford Files, which consisted, as he now remembers it, "of wrecking cars and beating up on old Jim. Id get beat up two or three times, and then maybe Id get to beat up on somebody a little, just at the end. Garner's memories of the series are bitter, not least because it was so successful. His lawsuit against for a share of the profits from the series is now dragging on through its fifth year with no resolution in sight. "I think theyre waiting for me to die," Garner says. "But I wont, and if I do, my wife will carry on the suit, believe me. Garner, who has invested wisely over the years, can afford to sustain the suit. He also has, as he says, the luxury of being able tu sit back and wait for the good scripts. "Im a little too old to play the macho heroes," he says, "and I don't want to. But when something comes along like Heartsounds' or Murphy's, boy, you grab it." He is the Murphy of "Murphys Romance," the druggist in a small town (Florence, Ariz was the location), a mildly eccentric widower who exudes sharp wit and kindness and who befriends Sally Field as a divorcee come to town with her young son to start a horse ranch. 3092 SO HIGHLAND 5IG0IIDENIGC0BI3N0MINATI0 851 S ft S 363-62- ir (pg 13) 2:00.4:30.7:00.9:15 -- More than a movie an emotional surge into a triumph of blinding brightness. Stallones fee, said Parade, is twice that of Robert Redfords and Dustin Hoffmans. (Poor ducks, living on $6 million per picture.) It is also three times that of Jack Nicholsons, four times that of Stallones nearest female rival Meryl Streeps, eight times that of Jane Fondas, and about 200,000 times more than the Screen Actors Guild minimum. The $12 million is just for openers, of course. Stallone is also in for a large helping of Rockys immense procedes. And not to forget Rambo. With salary and profit-sharinStallone's cut from that movie may come to $20 million. H&R Block will not be doing his taxes. Is it obscene for one person to be making that much money in a profession that he presumably enjoys and which earns him the enduring obsequiousness of nearly everyone he meets? Even when the money is handed over gratefully by a nation in the throes of a hero famine? Of course it is. But at least it is based on supply and demand. No one has lost a dime on a Rocky movie, and no one is complaining. The same defense works for Red-forHoffman, Warren Beatty, Eddie Murphy, Harrison Ford, Paul Newman and a handful of others drawing multimillion-dolla- r fees, plus gross profit deals. There is the matter of track records. Generally, actors fees are based on either the success of their last movie or the anticipated success of the one they have in the can. Thus Harrison Fords fee, in the sucwake of the surprising cess of last years Witness," jumps from $4 million to $5 million while the greening of Michael J. Fox from TV series ensemble player to star of movie hits Back to the Future and Teen Wolf has reportedly put his fee near the $2 million mark. hand-to-mou- th JSaL "Out of Africa PG (pSllI 3 HRS HU IjLi 50- - OF PARKING IN DOLBY STEREO DAILY mm WITH 12 AT 278-471- 45. 3 45. 6 45. 9 45 "Troll 1 I MSLECTEOnCATFCS Soundtrack Available on MCA - ....... - Records - A UNIVERSAL and Cassettes 1 W4 'Mi UNIVtMSAi.
