Show Lifestyle I 4 Monday, January Section A 20, 1986 Page 6 He turns Ugly Ducklings into Swans By Carolyn Monson Tribune Fashion Editor Steven Tofanetti has made a career of turning Ugly Ducklings into Swans dory came to him, however, when he did just the opposite He has been makeup artist to Holwoods film and stage stars since 1064 It was and is his job to turn ordinary women and men into glamorous creatures Then, the movie, Planet of the Apes came along and he was voted a special achievement award by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for his work on tur ning ordinary faces into extraordinary ape faces with makeup and masks He remains a professional, freelance makeup artist and also serves as marketing representative for Woodard Cosmetics, a skin care and beauty products company. In Salt Lake City to promote the company, he talked about his Hollywood career, women and beauty. He is a small-fowboy, he said, who wanted the glamour and excitement of life Worked as Extra Born and raised in Jackson, Calif., site of one of the first big gold mines in California, he got his first taste of Hollywood when he was selected as an extra in a movie, filmed in 1959, called "The Gray Ghost. He said The movie was filmed in Jackson and needed people who could ride horses and fall off them without getting hurt. One day he was a Confederate soldier. The next day, he served in the ly n big-cit- y Union Army. When the filming ended, the com pany left and he was determined to do the same, he said The year was 1964 and the smalltown boy was now in the big city There were acting lessons, jobs as an extra in several films. He discovered it was not performing that interested him but working in the industry itself He joined Universal Studios as an apprentice in the makeup department and his career was established Not Just Beautiful He entered the business just as the glamour era was ending The women who were coming to him early every morning were not the Ava Gardners and the Lana Turners of the '50s, who always looked perfect with stenciled brows, bright red lipstick and only blue, green or violet eyeshadow. His clients were women whose job it was to play a part instead of just looking beautiful. Still, he explained, enhancement was important. The actresses and actors that met with him in the wee hours every morning before filming was begun, he explained, have all the same faults, peculiarities as the rest of us. bad They are real people breath, broken facial capillaries from too much drinking. They have the same problems other people have: kids, romances, divorce. You hear a lot in the morning. His favorite people include Elizabeth Taylor, Barbara Stanwyck and Ingrid Bergman. He also has been known to do house calls. Clients have included Peggy Lee, Rosalind Russell and Mary Pickford. Stage Makeup He also has done some stage makeup, decidedly different from the movies, he explained. He talked about what's required when an actor must grow old, young, and grow old again in the space of just an hour He told about a play that opened in Los Angeles, and, unfortu- nately closed there before reaching New York It starred Fritz Weaver who played an man in the opening scene, played a young man in the second scene and an old man again at the end He used what he called Lamb Chops to achieve this process. Mr Weaver would leave the stage as an old man, change clothes, remove the chops (carefully painted and contoured appliances that stuck to the as a young cheeks), and then man. My greatest fear, and that of Mr. Weaver, was that those appliances would fall off. Technical advances have been profound in the area of makeup, the expert explained. Werewolf pictures are a good comparison. The first movies involved gluing bits of hair in sequence and then just editing the film. An American Werewolf in Lon- - Periodontal disease Tooth loss is due almost entirely to caries, a decay that results in cavities. Once a person reaches the age of 35, this type of decay becomes less common due to the resistance teeth have built up, but another problem can cause the loss of teeth periodontal disease (gum disease). This disease progressively degrades the gums, connecting tissue and bone that surround and support the teeth. Periodontal disease is so common that millions of Americans have lost all of their teeth because of it. don saw actual body changes. These advances plus the importance of makeup for any film and 'or stage production, has given long overdue credit to the makeup segment of the industry. Makeup now has its own Academy Awards segment If enhancement remains important to the film industry, it is equally important for anyone who wishes to make themselves look better. Women need to view makeup as more than blue or green eyeshadow, he said. He sees the 80s as the era of education Women must not only learn skin care but also what works for them. Just as clothes can work, or not work, for a woman, so can her makeup. Seek Professional Help He advises women to seek professional help and be honest with themselves. There are tricks in makeup that truly make a woman look better. It can be as simple as eyeshadow. A matte shadow on the brow bone gives the eye area depth. A shiny shadow on that bone brings it out. "Color on the cheeks is highly important for an older woman. She must not put that color over wrinkles. Any color there will accentuate those wrinkles. It takes practice and time. A woman can do a good job of her makeup in as little as 10 minutes. There is a natural flow to application. But, a woman who is not willing to spend that 10 minutes will not look as good to others, or to herself, as the woman who is willing to spend the time." Steven Tofanetti, Hollywood makeup artist, has done the glamorous as well as makeup for film, Planet of the Apes. Can organizing your life really be the key to happiness? By Judy Magid Tribune Lifestyle Writer In the dark heart of winter when fog seeps into my bones, I begin to suspect that the sun, like certain of my relatives, has moved permanently to a better climate. All I want tQido is curl up in a chair and read. While Im vegetating with the early seed catalogs (Maybe Ill send away for this new corn), others have ears, shoulders and noses to the ground, wheel and grindstone. They are movers and shakers and doers. OK. So I have friends who have their Christmas shopfor next Christmas. ping almost finished I probably wouldnt notice, except for the fact that I have a child whose shopping is just about finished, too for last Christmas. As mv children get ready to go out into the world, I am filled with an urgency to arm them with little homilies that will make their lives easier. Trite and True A stitch in time Dont put off until tomorrow ., Alas. Its . ., "Make hay while the sun shines difficult to try to impress your offspring with vital clues for success when you have to add, Do as I say and not as ... ... . . . ... I do. (b) Load all my vital possessions checkbook, lipinto my handbag. Then stick, comb and glasses change handbags at the last minute. (c) Come to work in rubber ducky shoes only to discover that one dress shoe has been left at home. The other day as I was fumbling for coupons at the cash register in the grocery store, I saw a woman with her entire life in her hands. She had a loose-lea- f type folder. It contained her checkbook, discount coupons, sales receipts, tax records, car mileage record, monthly budget, yearly goals, birthdays, anniversary dates, weekly menus, recipes, calendars of coming events, plus a place for house and car keys, and a copy of War and Peace. A want to say important things Time management. Discipline. The Peter Principle. Murphy's Law. I think about them when I (a) Make a grocery list, put discount coupons in an envelope and forget both. I Moment Saved Im joshing about the book. But if you consider only the time she saves by not having to look for her keys, she could read two books of that size each month. Not everyone can walk around attached to a loose-lea- f folder. Each has hisher method of operating as a responsible person. There are too many areas to cover to play life by ear. Basic discipline saves aggravation. Make lists. Every organized, successful person I know makes a list every day of things they must do. Some people have lists for the week, the month, a lifetime. Settle for one day, the rest will come. Keys. Life is easier when you know where your car keys are. Stress. Getting to the airport before ;cu have to make like O.J. Simpson through the corridors saves a lot of stress. Time. Everything takes longer than you think it will. More time. If you need more time during the day, get earlier in the morning. Youll be too sleepy to notice and it will extend the day. up an hour Diet and Budget are not dirty words. Neither means going without. Watching what you eat can keep you healthier. Budgeting your time and money gives more of both. Do it now. Whatever you put off will be forgotten andor lost . . Which reminds me, I had better order the corn seed as soon as I can find where I put that catalog. . A reviving interest in tango spotlights foot comfort - You can MEMPHIS, Tenn. (UPI) waltz across the floor, or foxtrot, or cha-chBut its the sensual tango and its provocative Latin rhythms that make the heart beat faster. The intimate, seductive tango is increasing public interest of dancing together again, says dance teacher Ronald Montez of San Diego, a seventime undefeated International Latin Dance Champion. While the tango may be a recipe for romance, nothing is so unromantic as a sore foot. Dr. Scholls Foot Health Council a. says dancers, whether they be tangoing or waltzing, can be more comfortable if they take care of their feet. One thing to do is to add cushioning to your shoes with insoles that absorb some of the shock when your feet hit the dance floor. Another tip check your feet regularly for red spots that may indicate a blister or corn is developing. Cover the tender areas with moleskin to reduce the irritation caused by friction between your shoe and your skin. If you have calluses, dont ignore them. The foot council says calluses can get hard and split, possibly leading to infection. A pumice stone or a file will help reduce them. The council recommends a regular foot grooming regimen to keep your feet in dancing form. Soak your feet in lukewarm soapy water. Then dry them thoroughly and dust with powder. Eliminate the rough skin with a pumice stone or a file. Cut the toenails straight across to prevent painful ingrown nails. And soften the skin with a conditioning lotion. And youre ready for the dance floor.
