He has sent me flowers and a loaf of bread he baked himself (it was very good). We talk on the phone on the average of four times a week. Our conversations last anywhere from one to hours. It was a wrong number. He ctiled back a minute later and said, Several I look forward to his calls They brighten my life, but I wonder if he is a little squirrely or married, maybe to a woman who works at night. Why doesn't he want to meet me? My best friend says I should ring off permanently, but I hate to give him up. What do you say? Undecided In Sioux Falls Dear Undecided: Something is rotten in the state of South Dakota. It sounds to me as if the man enjoys playing games and has a few bats in his belfry besides. And whats with you that youd spend so much time on the horn willy a stranger? My advice is to sign up for more volunteer work This character is a monumental waste of time, and he could be bad news. Dear Ann Landers: Are you aware that tinnitus (ringing, roaring or clicking in the ears), as described by "Boston Sufferer, afflicts millions of Americans? Some people notice tinnitus only occasionally. Others have it all the time. It's like a personal background noise. Sufferers of severe tinnitus find it hard to carry on their normal activities. Some cannot hold a job. Others cannot sleep. In spite of its prevalence, little has been done to help most sufferers. There are treatments, however, that can help some tinnitus patients. The American Tinnitus Association Should send a long, self addressed stamped envelope to the American Tinnitus Association, Box 5, Portland, Ore 97207. -- OH, Executive Director Ann Landers carry on and support research and educational activities relating to the cure of tinnitus and other defects or diseases of the ear. I built it long ago, based on the design of my grandfa-tler- s workbench, but never wrote plans for it. The number of letters I've received asking what type of bench I uie made it clear that I should. The granddaddy bench has a wide range of features itat facilitate work, and was built entirely using hand-htl- d power tools. Its sized for a large shop but you can ireorporate many of the same design features into a snaller bench, if your shop space is limited. Before you start building your workbench, decide vhere in the shop it will be placed and how large the top vork surface can be. Remember to allow plenty of room (Law up plans what I call my step-by-ste- p 2 ratings systems. Although some all the way around it so you can handle plywood sheets, long boards, etc. The top work surface of my granddaddy bench is 48x89 inches, made of red oak, walnut, ash and pecan laminates. I assembled the laminates in sections. When all the sections had dried, I glued and clamped them together with the top surface down, so it would be as smooth and even as possible. After I had constructed the base, I place the laminated surface on top and then added the wider edge and end boards around the top. There are three built-ivises that extend out beyond the top: a holding vise, a sliding vise and a regular wood vise. It also features built-i- n holddowns and bench stops. Its easy to incorporate as many bench stops as you like. Just drill sockets into the top surface, to accommodate lengths of dowel. Cut several lengths of dowel and insert them wherever needed for the job at hand. The base is 36x72x36 inches, made primarily of maple. It contains four very large storage drawers, each about square and deep. All four open on one long side of the base. An alternate idea, especially if you dont have a lot of space around the bench, is to build eight shorter drawers, four opening on each side of the base. On the opposite long side of the base, I covered the back ends of the drawers by installing a nice plywood panel edged with decorative molding and featuring wood appliques (as shown in the photograph). Both ends of the base are left open to cut down on the overall weight, which is not to be sneered at, especially if you use mostly hardwood. I left an open area above the drawers for storage of often-useor taller items like gallon cans of paint thinner, etc. You can reach into the open shelf from any side of the bench. For a professional touch, I covered all screw heads with plugs cut from ebony. n would call this censorship, expect increased use of warning labels on music and video tapes and further re- finements of the movie rating system. Copyright Laws: Speaking of music and movies, efforts to keep the public from making copies of things they used to buy will continue. The manufacture of machines designed to copy computer programs, video tapes and audio cassettes and illegally receive cable television also will continue. The battle of electronics will likely end in the courts. A linguist at Emory University points to several reasons for this. The South, for instance, did not receive the waves of European immigrants whose speech patterns affected the North. Second, a historically low literacy rate encouraged a strong oral tradition in the South. And, even after the Civil War, the South remained relatively isolated from the rest of the country, which helped reinforce its characteristic drawl. ener yet discovered but it vill continue to be scrutin zed for possible harmful side effects Dennis Its a Digital World: The mcrea. ed use of digital docks and wristwatch-ewill render the terms clockwise" Hinkamp s and counterclockwise consumers, it also has created problems. Those hurt most are people in the lowest income brackets. One of the solutions to this problem is the creation of "lifeline services. Banks, utilities and telephone companies are beginning to offer minimal costmin-ima- l service arrangements for consumers who otherwise would be priced out of the market. Auto Safety: There has been an upsurge in concern for auto safety. Many states currently have and many others are considering mandatory seat belt laws; all 50 states have some form of child restraint law; automatic air bag protection systems are available on several 1986 model cars; all 1986 models are required to have a third brake light; and more states are raising the legal age for purchase of alcohol to 21. Artificial Sweeteners: We will continue our quest for the calorie-fre- e lunch. Nutrasweet, the brand name for the artificial sweetener aspartame, will continue to show up in more and more products. It is the most nearly perfect artificial sweet meaningless.
