Setup ABC’s recent complaint about the unrewarding expense of its Monday Night NFL Football schedule seems to have fallen on receptive ears Fox Broadcasting Co the new kid on the network block wants to air some National Football League games on its network and is willing to pay as much as one of the big three commercial networks according to Barry Diller Fox chairman Diller last Saturday said Fox would be willing to sign a contract with the NFL to air prime-tim- e games for "any rational amount of money” That in itself seems to rule out any chance for FBC because there is one thing all the networks agree on and that is the cost of acquiring the rights to NFL games is anything but rational — exorbitant would be putting it mildly At the same time Diller said “We would take ABC’s contract and sign it today” (ABC presently is renegotiatcontract worth about ing a five-ye$700 million "We are making an investment for the very long term Very important to us is credibility There are ways to purchase credibility” Diller added Fox has “communicated its interest to the NFL” Diller said but “right now wouldn’t characterize it as negotiations” (Maybe NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle has nightmares of Joan Rivers being a color commentator for the games ) ABC’s displeasure with NFL Monday Night Football ratings extends to the AC Nielsen survey itself The third-plac- e network informed Nielsen that it is canceling the ratings-servic- e contract effective Aug 31 Since the Nielsen numbers are used to establish advertising rates ABC would like to prove that its programming is watched by more viewers than Nielsen says it is ABC is especially unhappy with Nielsen data which claim that while the ratings when viewers protested the series’ apparent demise Tuesday's episode of Hill with no corresponding increase in female or teen viewing” And believe it or not Nielsen is listening The company is in the process of scrapping its audiometers which are fixed to the backs of television receivers and will replace them with hand-hel- d “people meters” which require viewers to identify themselves to a computer as they watch programming ABC has said it would make a final
