reputation as one of the most violent leagues in Utah high school basketball tourThat leaf ue’s season-endin- g nament last winter ended with posty game brawls after both the and Jordan-Sout- h games In league openers Friday a fight at Jordan resulted in an assistant coach and an assistant principal being hospitalized and the game between West and Jordan being called with 37 seconds to play At Tooele one juvenile e was arrested in a fight involving fans and players attending the Tooele-Murra- y game Administrators and coaches from West spent much of the weekend reviewing video tapes of the game The tape which I viewed Monday afternoon clearly shows one West player as the instigator of the brawl That player was suspended from school Monday and will not play basketball the rest of the season Three other West players who were involved in the incident have been suspended from school for three days and will miss Tuesday’s South at West game The tape also showed at least one Jordan player participating in the West-Murra- post-gam- fight It is significant to note that other schools in Region Six — in fact every team in the league except for Judge Memorial — have been involved in fights during the last two league weekends Because of past incidents and because of the racial mix of West High the knee jerk reaction is often to blame West for many of the problems It takes two to fight There is little doubt that several Panther players lost control of themselves Friday night at Jordan There is just as little doubt that players from Jordan were involved in Friday’s incident and were certainly involved in last year’s fighting at the Region Six tournament in their game with South There was fighting after the Murray-Tooel- e game Friday involving players And Murray players were every bit as involved in the fighting at the last year’s region meet at West as the Panther players West dealt with Friday’s situation by identifying the players who were involved and punishing them Films show that the injuries to the Jordan assistant coach were inflicted by a fan Civil authorities who did an excellent job controlling what was fast developing into an ugly incident will decide what action to take against that person It would be a tragedy for the entire West student body or basketball team to be labeled as street fighters espe with a high who cared graduated average Bob Lyman himself graduated from the West program He admits that he was a poor student who attended school only because of sports And there are the dozens of first-rat- e s athletes and students who have graduated from West over the years who are unfairly maligned because of past incidents West is often maligned for racial reasons Racism is still rampant in our society Some fans look at the racial mix of West’s basketball team — which has one Vietnamese two Mexicans one Tongan one Samoan one Hawaiian and three blacks — and make unfair judgements Lyman said his players heard some racist remarks made during the course of Friday’s game which may have helped to prompt the inexcusable incident Those who would condemn West while ignoring past incidents involving their own schools should also take a close look at what is happening in high school athletics grade-poi- nt high-clas- cially in view of what athletics has done for many players at West over the years “We have a reputation as big bad West High” said Panther Coach Bob Lyman “But I would like to see anybody come over to the school and meet my kids on an individual basis They are good kids They’ll deal with you straight” A quick review of recent history would reveal a number of students at West who have had their lives profoundly changed because of high school sports There was the kid caught stealing items out of the locker room who used basketball as a way to get back into the mainstream of society and and atended up being an The administrators of Region Six have to share some of the blame The region tournament a year ago fueled rivalries already heated by a tough league race The only reason for the tournament is to make money If the administrators still elect to go ahead with the tournament as scheduled all-stat- tending college There was the kid who was flunking out of another school ended up on one of West’s last championship basketball teams and because of a coach By The Associated Press The top seven teams
