Ms Thompson suffered six broken ribs in the accident and was treated and released at Cottonwood Hospital taken his head off when that canopy fell” said Murray Fire Chief Wendell Saturday Two firefighters and two police officers hospitalized for cuts abrasions and burns were released Monday All had been near the photo studio when it exploded Released were firefighter Jerry Bilanzich Fire Captain Keith Hall and Murray police officers Gary Unander and Scott Pepper Two ambulance crew members and a firefighter were treated and released Saturday night Closest to the blast was Murray firefighter Jerry Bilanzich who was attempting to shut off the leaking natural gas line with an adjustable wrench Firefighter Bilanzich had closed a valve on the leaking pipe halfway and was about to close it completely when gas apparently reached a critical concentration and blew the roof off the building sending a fireball about 100 feet into the air To reach the valve Firefighter Bilanzich had crawled beneath the car that had smashed into the building — and that probably saved Firefighter said the gas line broke inside the photo studio and gas probably filled the entire building until an explosive concentration was ignited by a furnace pilot light The blast threw nearby firefighters and policemen to the ground and “blew an ambulance across the street” Chief Coombs said The blast also damaged about 30 nearby businesses Arlette Day owner of Day Murray Music 4914 S State St said glass contractors were “having a heyday” as they bid for glass replacement jobs Fourteen windows were blown out of the music store across the street from the photo studio and 15 to 20 contractors bid for the job of replacing them she said By Monday afternoon new glass was going in The front entrance of the music store was barred but a sign directing customers to a rear entrance seemed to be working she said “Monday is usually a busy day but today is even busier than usual” she said possibly because people were curious to see how much damage had occurred Beulah Fern Robinson Litson Ellertson Beulah Fern Robinson Litson Ellertson 86 posted away peacefully Soturday 1987 Born Auoust 24 1900
