She said her mother and father both recommended it to her. Under questioning from David Schwendiman, special assistant U.S. Attorney, Mrs. Holman detailed her meeting with Mr. Affleck in January 1982, and admitted "I really don't in response to a question know, about whether she had any idea what was going on that night. Mrs. Holman said she signed over a check to Mr. Affleck, but never inquired how much it was for, nor where it had come from. She said she later discovered the check was for a second mortgage on her house. Proceeds were used to invest in AFCO. Affleck neared the end of their case Wednesday as investors in the AFCO Enterprises continued to offer testimony that dethey trusted the smooth-talkin- g fendant, paying little heed to documents showing the investment to have a major risk. One of the witnesses, Kathleen Holman, a West Valley City woman, also told jurors it was not Mr. Affleck who provided the bulk of information, but rather, her mother. Mrs. Holman said she "never would have gotten involved in AFCO had she known that her house was pledged as collateral on a loan, but added she asked Mr. Affleck few now-defun- The Salt Lake Tribune Twins Undergo was fraudulent. According to allegations, Mr. Affleck hid material facts from investors that would have shown the investment to be too risky. However, under questioning from defense attorney A. Brent Carruth, witnesses continue to acknowledge that at the point of sale, they did not doubt the investment, nor the veracity of Mr. Affleck's pitch. The tactic is designed to indicate whether Mr. Affleck set out intentionally to defraud. Under law, intent is a prerequisite to fraud. Additionally, that line of questioning is also aimed at showing the investors to be at fault, in that they ignored all warning signs in exchange for the lure of making quick, substantive financial gains. Spokesman John Dwan said chief neurosurgeon Dr. Theodore S. Roberts will attempt to separate the babies, identified o.ily as Patricia and Ashley, during surgery scheduled to begin at 8 a m. The girls have had five preparatory surgeries, most of them involving separation of blood vessels and adjacent, but unconnected, brain tissue. In the most recent operation, the girls were fitted with skin extenders to stretch skin flaps designed to cover their skulls. Dr. Roberts will be assisted by plastic surgeons Drs. Clifford Synder and Louis Morales and members of the centers medical surgical team. Although Dr. Roberts has not yet encountered any shared brain tissue, angiograms taken of the babies heads before any surgery was attempted indicated that their brains do indeed meet at some point. The last major obstacle to separation involved dividing a shared pool of blood in the girls brains, accomplished during a' July 12 operation. The twins were born March 9 to a native Utah couple now living in Southern California. The parents, who have four older children, brought the twins to the medical center in May on the basis of the center's successful separation of conjoined twins Lisa and Elisa Hansen in 1979 through Friday. Running extra water down the Provo and into Utah Lake would allow the Central Utah Water Conservancy District to cut back the amount of water flowing into the lake from the Spanish Fork River. The extra Spanish Fork River water could be diverted into a proposed Central Utah Project (CUP) canal which would carry it past Nephi and into Yuba Lake (also known as the Sevier Bridge Reservoir). The Spanish Fork River water pouring into Yuba would replace Sevier River water normally required to fill the reservoir. The extra Sevier River water could be diverted from the upper reaches of the river and carried through a tunnel into the upper reaches of the Virgin River. From there it would flow to St. George.
