At 9 42 p.m., the gunman surrendered his weapon to the captain of the airplane and asked for political asylum, said Fred Farrar, spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration. The gunman, who was wearing clothes, demilitary fatigue-typ- e manded to go to New York while American Airlines Flight 658 was on the ground in preparing for takeoff, Farrar said. The jet took off at 8 47 p m. EST. The plane landed at Kennedy International Airport at 11.57 p m. EST and the gunman was taken into custody, a spokesman for American Airlines said. James Murphy, FBI special agent identified the man as Jean Phillippe Windsor, 34, a corporal in the Haitian army. He said Windsor may also have been a security guard at the airport, which the army patrols. He was taken into FBI custody on charges of air piracy, and was scheduled to be arraigned on Monday. "The exact circumstances as to why he entered the plane and demanded to leave Haiti1 are uncertain at this time, Murphy said. He said the report that he requested asylum was unconfirmed. Windsor was not a jcheduled passenger on the flight, and it was not known how he got aboard, Murphy added. The captain and the crew performed very, very professionally, Murphy said. They followed procedures and were successful in securing the weapon, which the agent described as an Uzi submachine gun. He said he did not kow how they secured the gun, and laid W'indsor also was carrying thrte clips of jacketed bullets. Al Becker, an American Airlines spokesman in Fort Worth, Texas, termed the problem a security threat.
