Show Barney Clark Named Top Medical Story of 1983 Special to The Tribune CHICAGO The biggest medical story of 1983, according to the Amer- ican Medical Association, was the "implantation of an artificial heart that sustained the life of Barney Clark for 112 days James H Sammons, M D association executive vice president, said the year in fact might have marked an historic shift away from public fascination with pure advances in medical technology to more sober reassessments of the impact of technology on human life. "Shortly after the death of the dentist in March, Stephen Kent Clark, M D , his son, observed that the operation was not worth it in terms of useful prolongation of life or added quality of life Clark told American Medical News in April that his father never really thought the artificial heart would work for him. All he expected to do was make a contribution to medical research. At the same time, Clark commended both the University of Utah medical team and the artificial heart," the AMA 1983 wrapup reports Liver transplants, "less dramatic but no less humanly appealing, were also big news during the year The case of Jamie Fiske, the Massachusetts child who successfully received a transplanted liver, and the University of Minnesota, was cited for focusing public attention on the plight of several other youngsters. Another conflict that moved into the legal arena this year was the "Baby Doe regulation. At issue was the question of who decides medical treatment for infants born with birth defects The government has insisted that medical treatment be applied essentially without regard to the quality of the life prolonged, an insistence thay many consider an unwarranted intrusion into the private lives of , Dr Sammons said, "The AMA believes the proposed rule is an map propriate intrusion by the federal government into an area best left to families, physicians and community leaders The unfolding drama relating to acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), also dominated public attention during 1983 with the news In May that several children in Newark had been stricken with the disease which formerly 'appeared only to affect male hopiosexuals, IV drug abusers, Haitians and hemophiliacs All the affected children were livhouseholds and the ing m high-riscases suggested disease transmission may not be restricted to sexual contact, drug abuse or exposure to blood products. k Phone Service Gives Lung Information Special to The Tribune A nationwide phone DENVER service has been established here to serve callers wanting information about chronic lung diseases, now third among leading causes of American deaths.
