But, when the snow fails to fall, it can be positively brutal. Thats been the situation at most Utah ski resorts this season, but resort managers and ski industry officials are still trying to make the best of a bad situation. They feel that Utah is in better shape than Colorado and California, where snow depths are generally lower in many areas; that the situation this season isnt nearly as bad as it was in 1976, and that conditions arent as bad as many skiers believe. Not Deserved Some of the negative effects of the lack of snow arent deserved, said Raivo Puusemp, director of Ski Utah. We get lumped with the whole western area. Nationwide, the impression is that nobody has snow when, in fact, there is some snow." Puusemp says areas like Beaver Mountain, Snowbasin, Nordic Valley, Parleys Summit, Park West and Sundance which have either not opened yet or have offered limited skiing are the places which are really hurting. Park City, with limited skiing and a huge staff, also has been hurt, although that area has been helped by the fact that it has snowmaking operations. Still, there seems to be plenty of interest in Utah skiing. Our inquiries for ski information are higher than any year that I know of, said Alton Frazier, director of the Utah Travel Council. Weve had a very high volume of people calling about the current snow conditions. Our skiing is better than almost anything else in the west and, at least by most standards, is not that bad, especially at places like Alta and Snowbird. My general impression is that resident ski business is down substantially while the business, if it is down, is not a total disaster. Skiing Indeed, many Wasatch Front resorts are are finding that enjoying the skiing while residents are staying away in droves. You can almost tell where a skier is from by asking him how the conditions are, said Brightons Gil Jensen. The are not at all unhappy while the locals think skiing is poor." The local skier has held off coming but up, said Altas Chic Morton, many of them have finally decided they better start getting out if theyre going to get in some skiing this year. We had good trade over the weekend. Alta, with the deepest snow base of any resort, has probably had the best year, with long lines forming on its lifts over the holidays. Good Year Our year has been pretty good to date, says Morton. But my observation is that the best years we have is when everyone has good snow conditions. Thats when people really get in nt ts NHL Standings rirtura Mnaa AIMtc MvMm FaMc UvWmi W L T OF MPh 59 Salt Lake 29 27 24 22 11 14 14 14 Cty Indianapolis Fort Worth 43 54 Eaut Duquas i6Z RutgendC Holy Cross 55, St. Peter's 47 S ton Maryland al, Northeastern , Dartmoultl 55 St Joe's 67, Delaware 54 Rhode Island 42, Pitt Vermont Is, Siana 72 T emote 120, Wesleyan 90 WLTORGAPts. 9 S 11 17 20 25 35 25 30 5 196 208 123 149 1 IIS 4 2 3 9 175 170 141 154 in 1 IS 63 59 49 41 191 179 119 147 31 29 Dowling Tuesday's Remits Wagnsr Dallas 4, Tulsa 4 Oklahoma City 3 Indianapolis 4 Birmingham) Yale Ft. Park West, which opened after the holidays, is another resort that has been helped by snowmaking equipment with a $310,000 investment three years ago realiy paying off now. We determined we had as good skiing as anyone and were certainly not going to be hurt by opening. said Park Wests Dick Frost. Opening up alleviates the fact that some season pass holders were unhappy. We have four of seven lifts open. We are losing money. But thats the chance you have take when you get in the ski business." Most of the resort officials feel the key to how much they will lose this year will depend on how much snow falls in late January or early February. If, like last season, heavy snows hit in January, the resort owners feel as though local business will pick up quickly. admits Montgomery. Were managing expenses as best we can and were keeping our staff as small as possible to run the resort. Still, we have as good conditions as anyone in the west. The fog has hurt us locally.
