Collins, appearing for the first time with the Bullets since his weekend trade from Atlanta, didnt exactly stop A.D., but he did wind up contributing seven points in the quarter and 10 for the game, all this despite the fact that he had been used to playing almost exclusively at guard in Atlanta. McCarter, the former UCLA star who has bounced around in the Continental League for a couple of years before the Bullets rescued him last month, was pressed into duty with about eight minutes left in the third quarter because Kevin Porter, the quick little point guard who had been carving up the Jazz up to that juncture with 16 points, had picked up his fourth foul. Although McCarter wound up with only four points, his importance was that he helped the Bullets get by without Porter, who saw action again only for a quick minute in the fourth quarter. In contrast to the play of Collins and McCarter, the Jazz had substitutes on the floor, with the exception of marathon man Dantley (all 48 minutes), for most of that decisive 17-- 3 burst at the end of the third that put the Bullets in command and on their waj to their fifth straight victory. 18 points from Ron Boone, Utah got a season-hig- h home runs. who also shot in a pair of three-poiThe Jazz, which has now won only at Detroit in their 10 road games against Eastern Conference teams, can take solace in the fact that theyll be playing their last Eastern road game of the season Wednesday night in Boston (5:30 p.m. MST, Channel The Jazz, 2 overall against the East, will be tc.sk in trying to beat the facing a Celtics, the NBAs hottest team with nine wins in a row and 21 in their last 22 games. nt le Smith Could Be Key Eagle Charlie Smith, PhiladelNEW ORLEANS (AP) broken-jawe- d wide receiver, will almost and Eagles quarterback certainly play Sunday Ron Jaworski says Smiths presence could be pivotal in the Super Bowl against Olakland. BYU guard Steve Craig (23), I and El Salvador, is cow at after life in Beverly Hills home in Cougars backcourt. Cultural Shock Gives BYU Guard Craig Perspective By Ray Herbat Tribune Sports Writer PROVO During the past six years, BYU basketball player Steve Craig has experienced the cultural shock of going from a more than modest Beverly Hills upbringing to serving a church mission in poverty-stricke- n El Salvador, then returning home to find his starting spot on the Cougars quintet had been taken away from him. senior guard who plays Craig, the alongside Danny Ainge, has grown as a person from his experiences. His attitude on life and sports is refreshing as a result of the joys and despair of those recent years. Yes, I did go into cultural shock when I arrived in admitted the El Salvador, athlete. There was a lot of rioting and political problems there, and for three months martial law was declared. We couldnt do any teaching after dark because the military had orders to shoot anything that moved. People Very Poor The people there are very poor, Steve continued. There are very few rich people, and those few own most of the country. My companion and I families and I always lived usually with middle-clas- s had a cot to sleep on. But my diet certainly was different. We basically ate rice, beans, vegetables and fruit. No, its true, back home in California I never really worried about where my next meal came from. But when I got to El Salvador, I really didnt expect to see how bad it really was. The mode of living is so much lower than ours. As a result of his diet, Craig contacted internal amoebic hepatitis and had to cut short his mission by a couple of months. Because of my illness, I had to come home, but I didnt want to leave there. I found my experiences very satisfying, I became very comfortable there and I really loved the people, said the public relations major. Scott Runia was recruited during Craigs absence. Runia and Ainge were the BYU starting guards and Steves playing time slipped to 19 minutes per game his sophomore season and to 15.9 minutes his junior year. Sure, it hurt not to be starting again, Steve admitted. Any athlete who has confidence and pride in himself feels that way. I knew I had the talent and ability to play, but I accepted the decision and tried to make the most of the time I did get to play. I guess Scott was doing a better job and that's why he played. Craig was the first player Coach Frank Arnold called after Arnold was named BYU head man. Coach Arnold saw me play at Beverly Hills High when he was an assistant at UCLA and I was the first player he called when he got the BYU job, said Craig. There has been a remarkable transition since my freshman days to now. Coach Arnold and his assistants have done an awfully good job of recruiting and coaching, and I have noticed a big difference in attitude now. There really are more quality players in the program than there was when I first came here. Craig is one of those unusually gifted athletes who excelled in all sports in high school. He was an all-stin baseball, basketball, football and volleyball, and he actually received more attention from the college scouts in football than basketball. "But I told my high school coach to tell the scouts that I was definitely going to play college basketball and not concentrate on football. My dad, Bob, played on BYU's 1951 NIT basketball team and I grew up always wanting to play basketball at BYU. However, I could have gone anywhere I wanted in football, said Craig. Football in Future? Now, football may be in Craigs future. The e wide receiver admitted, when pressed, that he plans on trying out for the Cougars football team this spring. You had to ask that question, he grinned, but. yeah, Im planning on giving football a try as wide receiver. I think my skills may be a bit rusty, but I think I still have those skills. Reminded that quarterback Jim McMahon throws a pretty hard pass, Craig replied: "Thats okay, my high school quarterback used to throw the ball pretty ar one-tim- hard too. Craig, who averages about 10 points per game, is not concerned over playing second fiddle to Ainge, the Cougars top scorer. There is no coaching rule at BYU that says Danny's priorities come first. But we realize that Danny and Fred Roberts are that good and we know that if we are to excel we have to get the ball to those two when they are open. But, yes, we d need more scoring balance on the team. Asked if he thought he was having a good season, Craig said candidly: No, not by my standards. I have not played up to my capabilities. I cant put my finger on it, but maybe its all in my head. Maybe I dont have the confidence I should because of my slow start, and it has affected me." Craig and the Cougars will be in WAC action Friday against Colorado State and Saturday against Wyoming. Both games are in Provo. Charlie Smith is the kind of person who, if I went to him and said, Youre starting, and he felt hed be a detriment, he would not start. Hed say, Coach, Im not ready. Start Rodney Parker. Thats the kind of person Charlie is. Right now I think hes ready. Since being knocked out of commission during the final regular-seaso- n game against Dallas, Smith has been only a spectator in the Eagles playoff victories which put them in this National Football League championship game. His workouts have been limited, his participation eliminated. Ready to Hay I feel like Im ready to play now, he said. Ive lost some weight; Ive lost some strength. Maybe Im not 100 percent, but Im ready. My timing is off and I havent practiced all that much, havent played in I dont know how long (almost a month). Im trying to get my timing back, my rhythm. I guess if I play Ill be a liule off, but itll be all right. On Tuesday, while Jaworski, Vermeil, wide receiver Harold Carmichael and most of the other Eagles were engulfed by the swarming news media here, Smith reclined on the sideline in the Louisiana Superdome, almost unnoticed. With his jaw wired shut and a web of rubber bands blanketing his teeth, he finds talking difficult, even tiring, and making himself understood is a chore. But Smith, a Baptist and a deeply religious man, accepts the fate which has befallen him in this, his seventh pro season and his first shot at a title. Ive been depending on the Lord for a long time, he said. So Irn gonna keep leaning on Him and pray that its His will that Ill be able to help the team. Sundays Super Bowl game between Philadelphia and Oakland is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. MST and will be televised by Channel 2. Its not all that frustrating, being out the way Ive been. Its like my nephew told me, Maybe the Good Lords just giving you a rest. Id never thought of it that way. So now I can feel comfortable about it and, come Sunday, if Im meant to play, thatll be fine. And if it comes that the coach decides not to use me, thats fine, too. Moses Waited Too long time to get here and now it looks like itll be taken away from me, but look at Moses; he spent all those years wandering but he never crossed over to the Promised Land. Even though I havent been able to play, I've still felt very much a part of this team, Smith went on. I didnt get put on injured reserve or anything and I hear the guys when were working out, how theyre pulling for me. The guys know I wish I could be playing. Vermeil said he sensed not so much frustration on Smiths pa as disappointment, "but hes very loyal and he realizes in this business youve got to take the good and the bad. Hes going through a negative phase in his career right now, but he'll come out better for having experienced it. Thats one reason why I hope very much hell start. Wants to Start of does So, course, Smith, no matter how much he shrugs off his status. This could be my last chance to play in the Super Bowl, he pointed out. This is it! This is the World Series. Every baseball player wants to play in the World Series. Every football players dream is to play n the Super Bowl. You look at a great player like O. J. Simpson. O. J. wouldve given his right arm to play in a Super Bowl. He never got the chance Im getting. Smith doesn t seem to think his presence will make that much of a difference in the Eagles offense. After all, he said, Parker caught four passes against Dallas in the National Conference championship game. "I know Ive played a Stenmark of Swden is second with 135 and Phil Mahre third at 125.
