During Abraham Lincoln's time, recllners had straight lines and lots of brass nailhead for trim William Morris, who gave the world some comfort via upholstered chairs, also tried his hand at recliners. During the middle years of this century, recliners were rather large, clunky pieces. The reeliner was usually Dads favorite chair because of it comfort and Moms least favorite because of its looks But then Raymond Lowey, one of the nation's premier industrial designers, created a handsome in 1966. The chair was featured in a Smithsonian retrospective exhibition that toured the country. Pretty and Comfortable During the last few years, the reeliner has come out of the recreation room or den, and found its rightful place in the living room. Slimmer in line and designed for small spaces in many instances, the reeliner has become a pretty as well as comfortable piece of furniture. To help consumers shop wisely for a reeliner, Chappie offered several tips. First, how can you tell what kind of foam has been used under the upholstery fabric? As a general rule of thumb, the denser the foam, the more comfortable and enduring it will be," the home furnishings specialist pointed massaging mechanism that is a boon to anyone wih tired muscles. History of Furniture The history of multifunctional furniture through the ages was outlined in a series of consumer seminars at Burdmes stores throughout Florida. Presented by Abby Chappie, home furnishings specialist for Barcalounger, the seminars included a slide presentation showing early functional furniture from Egyptian times through Colonial America, on to the Murphy bed, sleep sofa and r. They are particularly good for dry skin because they remove only a small amount of surface oil, are made of synthetic detergents and lather well. Theyre good for all types of skin and especially effective in hard water areas. Remove Surface Oil Deodorant soaps contain antibacterial ingredients that remove surface oil from the skin. They are often recommended for faces prone to acne and blackheads. Medicated soaps also contain ingredients that remove surface oil and they also are recommended as a treatment for acne. Teen-ager- s especially like these soaps, which are often effective in clearing up minor skin problems. However, over use can cause badly irritated ly grimy perhaps after falling in a swamp or after being caught in a dust storm. At about the same time, department store cosmetic clerks could terrorize helpless shoppers by accusing them of "soaping their faces. To admit guilt was to suffer through a stem lecture on the havoc wreaked on the skin by soap and water washing. We might have wondered how our greatgrandmothers, grandmothers and mothers, too, had preserved such lovely skins when all they ever used was soap. The reason they did is simple. Soap, no matter how we have all been brainwashed, is still one of the least expensive and most effective ways of cleansing the skin. Sun-Tim- apartment: Know how much your apartment costs will be. Include transportation expenses to and from work. Try not to spend more than 25 to 30 percent of your income for rent. Make sure the landlord puts security-depos- Rinseable cleaners or lotion "face washes," as they are sometimes called, are detergents. Labels use the words soapless" or nonalkaline. They are frequently praised for their ability to lather in hard water Detergents are excellent cleaners and are effective on oily skin. Economic hard times and the resulting inability to purchase expensive skin treatments need not affect the condition of your skin in the least. As a matter of fact, a simpler fare might suit it extremely Dont Help Much well. We have been led to believe we can prevent wrinkles and lines only if we keep our skins covered with creams and oils from our 16th birthday on! In actual fact our skins would quite likely appear clearer and livelier if they were kept drier and less products were used to upset their natural balance. Impacts Clean Feeling Soap, as well as removing the surface film and dirt from the skin, also imparts an exhilaratingly clean feeling. Although the supermarkets and drug stores are overloaded with hundreds of different brands of soap, they all fit neatly into one of these categories: Superfatted soaps are enriched with various oils coconut, lanolin, and produce a olive and others thick lather good for dry skin. Other skins benefit from these rich soaps arrangements in writing. The agreement should specify the amount of deposit and under what circumstances it will be retained and when it will be returned to the resident. Are utilities electricity, gas. heating, air conditioning and water included? If you must pay for utilities find out how much they cost each month by asking your landlord or the former tenant. Parking your car can be a problem in some neighborhoods. If you cant park on the streets, see if theres a parking space or a nearby garage that you can rent. Check to be sure the apartment has a refrigerator and other major appliances. If no laundry facilities are available, make sure there's a coin laundry nearby. Change the door locks when you move into a new apartement. You never know how many former workers or tenants still have keys. Make sure a trusted friend or neighbor has a duplicate of your house key in case of emergency. Post near the telephone the name and number of someone to contact in case of emergency. A good apartment lease should be written to protect both the tenant and landlord, but few renters bother to read the fine print. Here are some lease provisions to avoid, from The Complete Apartment Guide by Harvey Ardman Perri Ardman (Collier, $9.95) : Limitation of landlords liability in the event of accidents or damage not caused by tenant. Clauses that waive your right to legal notices. These give your landlord power to throw you out, raise your rent, etc., without giving you the legal written notice. skin. Have No Effect it A few short years ago, everyone was in an uproar over the pH content of soaps and what effect this could have on the skin. Today there is little evidence that pH is of great importance since the skin's natural buffers protect it, and soap remains on the skin for a very brief time before rinsing. There is little point in spending extra money on soaps that contain vitamins, special oils, fruit, vegetable or plant extracts; theyre not on the skin long enough to do any good. Once you have chosen your special soap, fill a clean wash basin with warm water. Splash your face with water, then work the soap between wet palms until youve got a good lather. Massage it lightly over your face and neck. Work fast! Dont leave the soap on your face for more than 30 seconds. Rinse throughly with two changes of water in the basin to make sure you have removed all the soap residue. Closing the pores by splashing with cold water is pure folklore but it does feel good. 5 Furniture can affect health n sions were married Aug Logan LDS Temple Mrs. Martinson 17, 1982 W I THE TBAXHH9G BJEVEE SOTS. The Egyptians, for instance, used folding stool beds; something to sit upon by day, sleep upon by night. Later on in history, there were tables and chairs that turned into library steps, pianos that became beds and beds that pulled out of cabinets. Inevitably, someone (thought) about inventing a bed that came down out of a closet," said Chappie. That someone turned out to be William Lawrence Murphy, an stagecoach driver. The Murphy bed, first invented in 1898, is still being produced in New York City, by the son of the inventor. For all of its inventiveness and durability, the Murphy bed is not as popular in today's homes as the sofa bed, which first came into being even earlier, Chappie told her audience. Duncan Forbes, a out "Also, the denser the foam, the heavier it is. Here is a tip The next time you are considering any piece of upholstery, pick up the seat cti'.hion and walk over to a rout h or another reeliner and lift the two and compare the heft. The lighter one, if there's a difference, will be made of a less desirable grade of foam Two Forms of Foam Foam comes in two forms slab, meaning a solid piece, and shred ded, or cut up into small pieces The slab variety is far superior, said Chappie, tierause it will not com pact or shift "It is also easy to tell which foam has been used without taking a pillow apart or tearing open the back of a chair," she added "Just run your hand over the surface The shredded foam in a cushion or a back will make the fabric surface " bumpy Removable Cushions Other tips: Look for seat cushions and hacks that are removable. "It costs more to make them that way and if the cushion is removable and it is covered on both sides, you will be able to reverse it and get twice as much wear out of that fabric covering." (An exception is vinyl, which usually is not used on the bottom of the cushion because vinyl has to breathe ) Check to see if the chair or sofa comes with matching caps for the r arms. This will help keep the and prolong the life of the upholstery. When it comes to the mechanism of a reeliner, give it the bottom test," Chappie advised. Sit in the chair and see how easy it is to operate. Is there any noise or scraping? Is the chair stable when the ottoman is extended or the chair reclined? "In addition, you might check over the chair for camouflaging," Chappie added. "By this I mean checking to see to what extent the manufacturer has gone to cover up the mechanism. While it is generally not possible to hide them entirely, some manufacturers have not addressed the problem of disguising the metal parts at all. And obviously, the more covered up these parts are! the nicer the chair will look when in use. arms-cleane- Best to pick the thin mirror By Enid Nemy New York Times Writer NEW YORK For more years than she cares to remember, Cynthia Friedland has been searching for a "tall, fat mirror. Miss Friedland isnt talking about dimensions; what she wants is a mirror that wont a short, skinny person make her look like what she is who is in danger of being twirled around in the air whenever the wind feels particularly energetic. Miss Friedland is obviously not a person who believes that a mirror is a mirror is mirror. She knows that some mirrors reflect exactly what's there, but that others can cause shock waves of horror. I made a mistake when I bought my own mirror," she said, sadly. "I bought a short, thin' mirror and no matter where I put it, it doesnt work. It makes me look like a concentration camp victim." According to Miss Friedland, who is a vice president of ATI Video Enterprises and a producer and distributor of television properties, there is no such thing as a mirror that makes one look tall and fat. They dont even have them in fun houses, she said incredulously. Or in the specialty places where youd think youd find them. Gets No Sympathy Miss Friedland, who is 4 feet 11 and weighs 84 pounds, gets no sympathy from most of her friends, who usually want to lose weight and love looking at her "thin mirror. No matter. She is determined. The next project on her list is having a craftsman fashion her dream mirror, which will, abracadabra, add both inches and pounds to her reflection. Gloria Golden, who is in reader service and programs at Womans Day magazine, used to love visiting the fashion department in her office. mail-ord- They had a thin mirror that was wonderful," she said. "I used to go in and console myself. That mirror disappeared, and Mrs. Golden, who admits to carrying a few pounds she doesn't want, is not mirror at home, which offers fond of her own a fairly true reflection. She also dislikes the "fat mirror owned by one of her friends. "I hate it so much I've even blocked out where it is," she said. Inger McCabe Elliott, the president of China Seas Inc., the design and textile company, lives with cracked, gray and slivers of mirrors in her New York home and doesnt find it a hardship. But things seem a little more beautiful when she gets to the country. We have a fabulous thin mirror in the bathroom there, she said. I always know its lying, and I expect the wicked witch to pop out and say You dont really look like that, but Im not going to let go of it. Im not so sure we shouldnt live with some of our illusions. Thin Mirrors who has given the subject some Judy Fresco, thought, is convinced that the only place to find thin mirrors is in department-stor- e fitting rooms. How come I don't look as thin at home as I do when I'm trying something on in a store? she queried, a little plaintively. Mrs. Fresco, who is in job training and education, said that although she was partial to fitting room windows were even better mirrors, department-stor- e reflectors. You see yourself quickly because you dont stand there looking, she said. And even better, you see yourself sideways." It is, as Miss Friedland said, a fact of life that a heck of a lot of mirrors are fat or thin, and thats all there is full-lengt- h to it.
