The set for Gemini" is currently receiving finishing touches. They wont SLAC off here By Nancy Funk Tribune Staff Writer Ed Gryska started out in a recreation hall, moved to a glass factory and has now taken up residency in a church. Hes pleased with the current address and hopes that the bags will remain unpacked for at least the next while. For the past 13 years, this quiet, engaging former Chicagoan, has stirred up the local theater community by presenting everything from Turds in Hell" to Shaws "Heartbreak House." Hes done it under the title of The Salt Lake Acting Company, affectionately known as SLAC by its many loyal fans. There have been productions of Hair," A Midsummer Nights The Maids," Dream, Pippin, Death of a Salesman," "American The Shadow Box. Buffalo," Whose Afraid of Virginia Woolf," Hedda Gabler" and "El Grande de Coca Cola," to mention only a few. As several theater companies have come and gone, this one has survived, an unusual occurence for a group that had no permanent home. Gryska is extremely modest about accepting any of the credit for keeping SLAC around all these years. He instead says simply, We had determination." The group first appeared during the 196970 season with the rock musical "Viet Rock" presented at Eliot Hall, the recreation hall of the First Unitarian Church. Gryska, an education major from Illinois, had come to Utah to ski in November of 69. He never left. He received a masters degree in English and humanities from the University of Utah and began teaching English at Cottonwood High School Theater had been pail of his life where he worked in summer stock. When he arrived to Utah, there weren't any theaters producing the type of plays he was interested in so he took out a loan, found a stage" and opened his first show, as director.
