Show Salt I.ak Tribune, SimH.iv, (Vloher Th ) 7, 9H2 II f Harsh Winter Could Change 1982 Deer Hunt t'0 f. By Tom Wharton Tribune Outd'xirs Editor For the past few deer seasons, Division of Wildlife Resources' biologists have been telling hunters that they could find the best shooting in he northern half of the state I Hunters, following their advice, have moved away from traditional central and .southern Utah hunting areas into crowded areas in northern Utah. Due to an extremely difficult , winter in northern Utah in that pattern has changed. This year, the biologists are saying the best hunting may be found in the central and l parts of the state when Ihp season opens Saturday. "I'm guessing that we're going to see a pretty significant change in hunter distribution," said John Kimball, the Division of Wildlife Resources' northern region game There have been enough biologist. hunters out during the upland game 19R1-82- south-centra- and elk seasons and just out rutting firewood that most people are aware our herds are down. "I think you'll see a big shift in hunters down toward the mitral part of the state," he continued "Traditionally, hunters from up here went down on the Manti and Fish Lake areas to hunt. After the losses in the early 1970s in those areas, our deer herds started up pretty fast. They were out of deer and we had good populations. I think we'U see thal reversing a hit this year." Kimball says there is a considerable decrease in deer numbers in Cache and Rich Counties due to winter loss. As a conservative estimate, he is guessing that 80 percent of the fawn crop was lost over the winter. When you consider that 60 percent of each season's harvest consist of last seasons fawns, its obvious that hunting in extreme northern Utah is going to be difficult this season. "We lost deer all over the northern part of the state," said Kimball. I "Things look good on the Manti and the White River," related Rates. "The roads, however, are really had right now. Rnt deer populations look pretty good. I've seen a lot of deer the past few days he LaSal area is coming hark up and s't are the Blue Mountains The smith Rook Cliffs and the Henry Mountains look slow " T Rales says the Henry Mountain ami the Rook Cliff units are listed as t trophy hunts because only deer or better can be taken lie says this is a bit deceiving bet a use it leads hunters to believe that there are many big deer in those units, which there are not foiir-Hm- Rales says one good hunt idea th.it many hunters aren't aware of is taking a boat trip along the Green River, putting in at Mineral Canyon or Spring Canyon and going up and down the river, hunting sand bars southern Utah, biologists are more optimistic than they have been in years In my area (extreme southern In Utah1, it reported looks pretty good so far," DWR southern region SKI INSTRUCTORS For Good Skier who want to become Instructors, and lor Good skiers who want to become Greet Skiers!
