Its inconceivable to me that they would hold up. Glass stars in a black version of The Odd Couple with Demond Wilson, who plays messy Oscar Madison. IT IS YET another incarnation of Neil Simons play about two divorced men who become mismatched roommates in an uneasy relationship marked by frequent bickering and making up. It was a smash hit on Broadway and around the world. Its still occasionally revived in regional theaters. It became a movie in 1968, and Tony Randall and Jack Klugman starred in the ABC series from 1970-7One of the things that we feel contemporizes it is their attitude toward divorce, says Glass. Im happy that the producers agreed with me that we wouldnt spend a lot of time moaning about the collapse of our marriages. Were going to heat up the pace of the show, and there will be nice looking ladies around for me to develop relationships with. Felix is a photographer, but were going to get more into fashion photography. One of the things that we talked about from the beginning is that I talk good. That suggests education, success, a more aggressive attitude toward life, as opposed to being a moaner who always talks about how life acts against him. Glass says, The characters will be more vital, more active. This is going to be The New Odd Couple, not The Old Odd Couple. So Felixs particularness is going to be valid, not just an arbitrary pickiness. His sophistication should be just as reasonable as Oscars lack of it. OSCAR WILL also find his horizons have been 5. Harris wasnt sloppy. He was a about the things and people around particular person him. They share that. Both are professional people. I think photographers, in my experience, are different from writers or policemen. If we were doing a play where we have five weeks rehearsal I could delineate that. Here I have to do it as I go along. Ron Harris at the end of the show has a much fuller, much more defined character. It takes time to do that. Hopefully when we finish the first 13 weeks Ill have a strong handle on it. Felix is more casual than suits. Ron Harris. From, my days in the theater wardrobe has always been an integral part of what I play. I know the wardrobe man at Paramount Studios thought I was crazy. I said I wanted very low heels on my shoes. It makes you move differently. And high heels make you feel loftier. I wanted Felix to be more accessible, his position to be more reasonable. I didnt want Felix to have that lofty feeling. Glass says, I feel very strongly that the black community spans the gamut in terms of lifestyles, economics, culture and professions. Its going to be a more worldly, hauteur kind of show, says Glass. He says hes developed a good relationship with Wilson, who starred as Redd Foxxs son on Sanford and Son. Theres a nice balance between the two of us, he says, both in terms of style and tone. Were not alike, but were complimentary. A third development sure to have a significant effect on the future of cable is the proliferation of various delivery systems, some of which are already beginning to give viewers a greater choice in television programming. These systems include STV (subscription television), with 1.7 million subscribeers nationwide, which uses a conventional television channel to send a scrambled signal that is unscrambled with a special receiver; MDS (multipoint distribution system), with a microwave system similar to 570,000 subscribers, STV with a more limited geographic range; SMATV (satellite master antenna television), with from 100,000 to 250,000 subscribers, which receives satellite-delivere- d channels with a rooftop receiver and sends them by wire to television sets below; and DBS (direct broadcast satellites) which sends a collector of programming channels directly to homes equipped with inexpensive dish receivers. UNTIL NOW SUCH services as STV and MDS have been limited to one channel, hardly a match for cable. But with recent technological advances and a loosening of regulations by the FCC, each competitor is capable of providing a range of channels to viewers. Such services take less time and money to install than cable. over-the-a- ir over-the-a- ir We feel that cable will have the dominant market share, said Paul Bortz, a communications consultant. We are not saying these services will beat out cable. But we are talking about cable maybe losing 10 percent of its households. Cable analysts believe that the competitors can make the greatest inroads in cities without cable by skimming off the more affluent viewers. CBS is planning to provide entertainment and information programming for a proposed MDS service with four to eight channels apiece in five cities. Three of them, St. Louis, Philadelphia, and Chicago, have no cable, and the two other, New York and Los Angeles, are only partly wired. THAT COULD REPRESENT a quick way to get more television to those people in those communities, said one top cable executive. The Borough of the Bronx, in New York City, for example, is still awaiting the award of a cable franchise. But several months ago Co-oCity, an apartment complex of 15,000 residents, announced plans to install a highly sophisticated SMATV system next year. Last week the FCC approved the first of nine proposals for direct satellite broadcast services offering from two to 12 channels directly to the home. The applicants include Comsat, RCA, CBS, and Western Union. Most envision beginning in three to four years, beaming programming to viewers in rural areas, cities, small towns, and suburbs in all 50 states. over-the-a- ir p el TV Week, 10, 1982 |
