Show 4U The Salt Lake Tribune. Sunday, October 1, 1982 Presidential assistant clarifies White House equality stand By Hazel S Parkinson Tribune Lifestyle Writer Task Force on Legal Equity for Women Its purpose is to ferret out or discover the inequities within federal government departments as they affect women, she explained Each department appointed a That person was representative given undersecretary level status, so he or she will have enough clout to do things She said the task force has It was sent completed one report to the Cabinet Council on Legal Policy for review of alleged discriminations and has been turned over to the Justice Department to see that changes are made She smiled and said, You saw reporter Sarah McClendon take the president to task for not knowing about that report, which he really didnt It had not been given to him at that time I truly believe that on the federal level these discriminations will be taken care of Mrs Quint san the president is hopeful that the same things will be done on the state level through the 50 States Project And where discriminations are found, the committee will send them to its legislature to correct the injustices " Utah One of the Best She was especially pleased to learn that Utah has one of the best 50 States Projects going I am well aware that the Mormon Church opposed the ERA I thought they might not be willing to pick up on it (the project) m Utah But I understand that you have a Blue Ribbon committee and it is really going to town Ms Norns explained to the visitor that since 1977 Utah laws have President Ronald Reagan purposefully didn't push the 50 States Project before the Equal Rights Amendment died He didnt want to be accused of watermg down the ERA, but he was accused anyway, said Mary Elizabeth Quint, deputy special assistant to the president Mrs Quint, Washington, D C , is no stranger to Utah She is a past president of the General Federation of Womens Clubs and has been in Utah many times She stopped m Utah recently after attending a GFWC conference in Alaska Here $he met with Jo Lee Norris, Utah governor's representative to the 50 States Project, and committee member Darlene Hutchison Mrs Quint, who is in the White House pqhlic liaison office, explained the program is to identify and correct state laws that are discriminatory In Utah, Gov. Scott M Matheson appointed Ms Norns, who recently became Mrs J Lade Heaton He Wants Equality Reagan trqly, very honestly, is a person who wants equal rights for women. He wants equality for women But he felt it could best be accomplished within the 50 states, rather than through the Equal Rights Amendment, said the special assistant He made it plain when he firmly stated that he didnt support the ERA, but he did support equality for women Within the federal government and by executive order, the president established the president's been changed as to gender references Mrs Quint said there are many other things still needed to help women Within our bailiwick (public liaison m the White House), we meet regularly on womens issues and concerns There are five of us, Elizabeth Dole, myself Thelma Duggm, Catherine Bedell and Diane Lozano At our last meeting we noted that an issue that should take a top priority is enforcement of child support laws Not so much law changes, but work on "enforcement of those existing laws She said that if there were enforcement of laws having fathers of illegitimate children share half the cost of raising the children, there would be less clamor for abortion I am bitterly opposed to abortion It is terrible that the economy forces a young woman (most of them are young) to do something she probably will regret (mentally and psychologically) the rest of her life " In a subject change, Mrs Quint said that few people know what the president has accomplished for women thus far in his admimstra tion It is our fault that more people do not know about the number of appointments he has made It hasnt been communicated prop erly The president necessan to didn't think it ballyhoo appoint- ments Reagan has appointed 9 percent more women to policy making Sampling new experiences By Dr Joyce Brothers How mqch sensation do yoq want m life and how much (jo you know sensation he or she feels is needed m life Truef atoqt man's need to sample the new?
