Or they can remain within the United States and make their way to the other Tlaquepaque, in Sedona, Ariz., at the mouth of Oak Creek Canyon. The domestic Tlaquepaque a creation of Spanish colonial architecture fronted by a massive stone wall may lack history, being no more than the recent realization of a dream of capturing the essence of Mexico executed by a businessman. Although construction began in 1971 and was completed in 1978, the village is calculated to appeal to tourists. Set in an area of exceptional natural beauty (Sunset Crater National Monument and Wupatki National Monument are not far away), Tlaquepaque contains 40 arts and crafts shops, galleries and restaurants amid patios, shade trees, fountains and plantings. It is also the sort of place where there are frequent special events. Scheduled for Dec. 11 is the years biggest, the Luminaria, or Festival of Lights, maintaining a Mexican tradition of Christmas processions Admission to Tlaquepaque is free.
