Young Mexico Sunday Morning, October By Dick Rosetta Tribune Sports Writer ALBUQUERQUE, N M -- They say to err is human. But University of New Mexico head football coach Joe Morrison admits that to err four times in one quarter against Brigham Young University is inhuman Morrison's Lobos did that Saturday afternoon they committed four disastrous blunders in the third period to open the floodgates to a stunning 40 12 Western Athletic Conference victory for the Cougars over a previously unbeaten Lobo New and Air Force among those still contending for the championship, play only seven WAC games while BYU and Hawaii play the eight league games. But if Ray Nagel, the former Ute coach who is athletic director at Hawaii, could have sold his idea to the WAC, all the teams would have played only seven league games. I tried to sell that idea of a seven-gamschedule but I lost by a close margin," Nagel said Saturday afternoon. "Why is it so sacred that every team must play each other? The Big Ten doesnt play a round robin in football," Nagel challenged. "Commissioner Joe Kearney had worked out a good formula where seven conference games was the rule, traditional rivals would meet every year, and every conference team had to play each other at least every two years. But that was voied club. "As basketball has shown by its expanded tournament field, the in or bowl terest is in games. Football in recent years is beginning to gain the national reputation that basketball in the area gained w'hen Frosty Cox of Colorado won the NIT. Ev Shelton and Vadal Peterson won NCAA titles and Dick Romneys Aggies beat Phog Allen of Kansas for a spot in the U.S. Olympic semifinals. Until those teams took the road and played in the metropolitan areas against the major teams, no one knew how good Rocky Mountain basketball was. That's the reason I think each conference school should be required to schedule seven conference games and four or five nonconference games without being penalized because another team elects to play eight WAC rivals. "Now that schools are increasing their seating for football it will be possible to bring in better intersectional opponents for the home folks. "For example Hawaii closes its season against Nebraska and the Cornhuskers have asked for 16,000 seats. All we could allow them is 8,000 tickets. But a few years ago when Nebraska played here the Cornhuskers had more fans in our stadium than we did. So you can see howour football interests have developed We feel we owe an obligation to our merchants, motels and businessmen to bring in those thousands of extra tourists and that's one reason we want freedom to schedule games that will be attractive and bring us the national exposure we want, Nagel said Press Leserphoto A&socj0ted center Bart Oates provides shelter for quarterback Steve Young (hidden), but ball has popped loose in this first-hal- f action Saturday. BYU beat New Mexico, post-seaso- n Carries Weight 26 big 7 down. "Consider too the argument that the NCAA may disallow the bonus 12th game if it is scheduled in Hawaii. That wont hurt Hawaii because we dont get the 12th game anyhow and plenty of schools like the idea of playing here. "But the Air Force Academy only joined the WAC on the assurance it could retain its traditional rivalries with Army, Navy and Notre Dame and be free to schedule intersectional opponents around the country. That is okey as long as the Air Force plays in Hawaii and is allowed the 12th game. But if that is disallowed, the Air Force may run into schedule problems that the WAC hadnt considered, Nagel admitted. points, folks ones in just over 12 minutes. And those BYU points from the 13:02 mark of the third stanza to the 1:10 mark came against the WACs second best defense and a defense that has led the league the last two seasons. "A nightmare, thats what it was. one long nightmare, Lobos defensive coordinator Joe Lee Dunn said, after watching his troops neutralize the prolific Cougars for a 12-first half lead and then witnessing the devastation wreaked by the BYU defense and quarterhaok Steve Young in that bizarre third stanza. Young, who emerged from beneath a sea of in the first half to dismantle the proud Loho defense in the second half, was at the helm as BYU piled up 230 yards offense in the third period and turned that 7 deficit into a lead after 45 minutes. It all happened so suddenly on a (made far cooler sunny, than that by a brisk wind) afternoon in University Stadium. The score: UNM 12, BYU 7. Taking the second-hal- f kickoff, Twenty-si- thats e Nagel continued, WAC football is gaining in popularity and stature every year but we cant sell our product nationally by beating each other week after week. BYUs victory over Texas A&M, plus two bowl victories, and Utah's showing against Arizona State and Texas this fall, plus BYUs close game with Georgia, are the things that gain respect for the league. "And with respect comes invitations to the bowls. "Many conferences have two or bowls three teams in because of the football reputations of those leagues and the fan support. In several recent years the second-placteam in the WAC has had a belter record than several bowl teams. "We should be free from conference commitments to schedule more intersectional games, Nagel added. Brouhard was sent to the minors on Aug. 12 this year, before being recalled on Aug. 30. "It was pretty exciting to get in a playoff game like this," he said "I was just glad to have the opportunity.
